Reasonable Bulls Trade w/Rockets

Houston sends: Rafer Alston, Carl Landy

Chicago sends: Kirk Hinrich

This trade is pretty simple and helps with one of our team problems, interior strength. Alston's salary comes off the books next year and Landry has potential as a starting PF. I don't believe his again ridiculously high PER (20.17) will keep up for 35 minutes a night, but he can play. The best part about him is his contract. 3mm for this year and next. And in 2010, a TEAM option at 3mm. So either you can dump him for cap space or keep him as a low cost big. This also shaves off about 1.25mm from the luxury tax line for next year.

Houston needs a point guard, preferable one who can shoot and defend. Hinrich reasonably fills those spots and clears up their log jam at PF. They basically have Artest, Scola, and Chuck Hayes filling that spot. Especially once Battier comes back.

I like it.

If I were Houston, I would go for it. I like Kirk a lot more than “Skip-To-My-Lou” (sp?).

i like it

but I don’t see why Houston gives up on Landry…he’s a pretty important piece to them. I see them letting Hayes walk way before Landry.

Isn’t Artest playing SF?

by NormVanBeer on Nov 26, 2008 10:36 AM CST reply actions

Hinrich should be their missing piece

T-Mac’s needs to facilitate the offense less frequently and rest more. In addition they need a 3pt shooter and Hinrich is way better than Alston (28%, yet still takes 4.1 attempts a game)

I can't find too much wrong with this

I guess the drawback would be to have Rafer’s somewhat volatile personality riding the pine behind DRose. But if we can live with that, I really like Landry. He’s undersized but he can really finish around the bucket and give good energy minutes at the 4. And, like you noted, his contract is great. Keep him around as the backup 4 man.

Fortunately, as long as he's injuried it doesn't hurt the illusion!

Reality will set in quickly once he comes back and when he continues to shoot hitting the rim
either too long or too short. “Clank”. Paxson must shorten this period and make a trade as soon as possible..

Illusion is a great tool in the hands of a good GM. Dumar didn’t seem to bent out of shape losing Ben Wallace to Paxson back in the summer of 2006.

man up!

Again

I see this as a trade that would allow Kirk to flourish as he’d have actual low post options on the block in Yao and Scola.

The returning pieces aren’t all that interesting. Do they help get Rose to a place where he isn’t going to get there with Kirk or any other pieces we could acquire for Kirk?

In a trust with Vinny Del Negro.

It's a salary dump first

but Landry could prove to be a valuable big for the team. And if not they can just cut him loose. This team needs some bigger interior players (strength wise, not height) and Landry does that while playing decent defense.

by CJ Bulls on Nov 26, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

I agree.

In my dream scenario, both Asik and Noah prove to be legitimate options behind and alongside Bosh. Landry is already there. Instead of having to draft a bigger PF in one of the next first rounds, they could draft a competent combo guard, which seem a dime-a-dozen in the middle of the 1st round.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

I'm pretty certain this doesn't work cap-wise

though I guess they could throw in Steve Francis or Luther Head or something

Yeah it almost works

It’s off by ~$100,000. Steve Franchise I think (haven’t checked) would put us over the luxury tax, but Luther head should work.

by Jamaicanpi on Nov 26, 2008 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

Ha

Hinrich for Alston and Landry is off by $20,000 that’s it! That’s the amount that the rockets need to throw in to make the trade work.

by Jamaicanpi on Nov 26, 2008 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Landry's BYC

so the Rockets are only sending away half of his salary (for trade-matching purposes)

good call

So, Houston definitely needs to throw in Luther Head. Not that that should be a deal breaker. I like the trade a lot. Even if we got him I’d want to see the Bulls still go after Millsap with the MLE this summer (even if he might be redundant with Landry).

I like a front court rotation of
Thomas and Millsap then
Landry and Noah

We’d always have a bruiser and a leaper on the floor at all times.

This is much more fun than work :)

yeah, it's not a bad trade

though your dream frontcourt still doesn’t have someone to defend big centers.

Actually teams over the cap have a 25% cushion when trading with each other.

They changed up the rules several years ago, because trades were never happening when the salary match had to be exact.

Landry is trade restricted, until January, maybe. Tried Francis and Alston for Hinrich($10 million for $7.5 milliom) on ESPNs trade machine and it still worked, and Francis only makes $2.6 not $3 million like Landry.

by BigWay on Nov 27, 2008 12:34 AM CST up reply actions

I know

I just used math rather than the trade machine.

my original comment forgot about the BYC
Houston
Out
Hinrich 10 million

In
Landry 3 million (due to BYC outgoing value is 1.5 million)
Alston 4.9 million
Total 7.9 million
Trades have to be within 125% of value + $100,000
=9.975 million

With Head it works
Head 1.96 million
+Landry + Alston

I think you may have thought I was advocating replacing someone, when I was just saying add a contract to the deal

by Jamaicanpi on Nov 27, 2008 6:55 AM CST up reply actions

My mistake

I didn’t catch he was BYC on the trade checker. The framework is there. We can include a luther head/ced simmons combo or something to put it back on track.
