"How much is Joakim Noah's lack of conditioning a problem 14 games into the season? He waved to the bench to be taken out only nine minutes after the opening tip Monday."

He had 7 boards and 4 offensive boards in just 19 minutes. And we shot 51% from the field. We need his rebounding badly. What's it going to take to get him in shape?

Time and Health.

It was reported that he was injured during summer league and again early in camp…conditioning is something that can only be developed over time.

Skiles ran the Bulls into shape

during his first training camp.

But that was Skiles the brow-beater. Not Vinnie the guy who hires motivational speakers.

didn't mean he couldn't come back in the game

I’d understand how his green lungs would piss off the coaching staff, but still…

Part of this is natural

Part of this is Noah being out of shape, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say part of it is him just needing to fill out and play with more weight.

From what I understand, it’s hard to both gain muscle and not gain fat at the same time. Generally speaking, if you try to build muscle, you’re going to put on some weight when you do it, and you’re going to have to work it off later.

Remember back to Tyson’s last year here, he came into the season at something like 250. He was not in basketball shape, but it was also the first time he wasn’t routinely knocked around like a flouncy little rag doll. By the second half of the season he was playing better at his new size, and by the following season he was in good shape.

Now, I don’t know that this is going on with Noah, but I think it’s kind of what we have to expect when we’ve got a skinny kid who we expect to eventually be an NBA center. You can’t change your body overnight and expect there to be no consequences.

I thought Chandler's problem his last year here stemmed from not working out at all

At least, that’s what I remember Sam selling that summer. “Chandler and Curry aren’t working out because they don’t want to get injured before signing extensions.”

We have every right to dream heroic dreams. Those who say that we're in a time when there are no heroes, they just don't know where to look.

Sam likes to get his quips in from time to time.

I’m not really buying he completely sat on his ass. In any case, he’s still noticeably more muscular than he was the previous year.

And for that matter, I think Noah is too, as Belize points out. Dude’s arms did NOT look like that last year.

Yeah, this pic made me go "whoa."

It appears he was at least hitting the weight room, if not the treadmill. Better than nothing?

It isn't difficult to gain muscle without putting on fat

If Noah doesn’t put on five to ten pounds of muscle by the end of the year, he’s just not working hard enough.

Its really hard for an NBA player...

To put on any muscle during the season…there is no time for proper workouts and rest…

I dunno

I hear all these stories about Yao Ming hitting the weight room right after games, doing everything he can to get bigger. For a seven-footer, 5-10 lbs of lean mass shouldn’t be asking too much.

Is this so hard to believe?

It’s common knowledge that Yao works really hard.

Here’s an article discussing the amount of work Yao puts into his body and game

http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1105360/1/index.htm

If Noah had a third of Yao’s desire and work ethic, he could become a solid pro.

Not hard to believe at all,

just interesting, something I’d enjoy reading. Thanks.

Also,

Yao is Chinese – a country that prides itself on hard work, responsiblity and a strong work ethic. I also recall hearing stories of him leaving home at age 13 to pursue his basketball career with the Chinese National team. As the son of two Chinese National basketball players, Yao was literally bred for success in the NBA.

Noah, while he also has an all-world athletic background, grew up in both Paris and upper-class Manhattan, went to prep school and has been pampered his entire life. Sure the kid has worked hard to get where he is now, but in no means has he even came close to working as hard as Yao in his career.

Not trying to be stereotypical here at all, just saying that a person’s background does play a factor into their attitudes/behaviours on and off the court.

I agree about the diferences in upbringing

But Noah’s a pro now, receiving a pro paycheck. Doing nothing over the summer but bang Florida co-eds and smoke weed isn’t going to cut it.

Altitude

Denver, than Utah, 4-500ft, back to back, played too hard start of game, played at sea level 4-5 past years, nailed him.
Maybe you can remember a Houston player Hakeem Olajuwon, could only play quarter in Denver and Utah with O2 tanks at the side. Depends on the player, everyone reacts different, but he was hurting for air, not an injury, RBC count low, big huge players, hits much harder if their red blood cell counts are low. Takes six weeks for the human body to build up the RBC’s to get back to normal, not in a couple hours or days.

Olajuwon was the guy Houston gambled on,

instead of drafting the sure thing in Sam Bowie.

Sure does.

Can’t wait for the fanpost manifesto.

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."
