[From the FanShots. Good news: some explanation for Deng's poor play last night. Worse news: after blaming the sore achillies last season, here's another injury that likes to 'nag'. -ed.]

Ok Lu, you get a pass this time...

"Worse, the Bulls could be without Luol Deng's services Wednesday in Portland. Deng tweaked his left groin at the morning shootaround and played just 26 minutes after drawing the starting assignment on Bryant."

Well that is just great

I thought Deng’s minutes were being restricted so he could play tonight against Portland.

In a trust with Vinny Del Negro.

Awesome

SF is probably Portland’s weakest position, and naturally one of our advantages diminishes. But, hey it’s no big to put even more pressure on the backcourt right?

Hopefully

Tyrus can just pretend he’s playing Detroit (where he always seems to have good games) because of the Tyrus and LMA comparisons.

I thought Tyrus looked great yesterday….really good, really athletic and highly skilled….hope he keeps it up. Nobody in the league can do some of the things he did, nobody….yet he’s still more apt to bone-headedness.

according to mybulls

he’s probable with an abdominal strain, though he’s been listed like that since the indiana game, which seems like this is a different thing than “tweaking his left groin at the morning shootaround” since obviously that occurred after indiana.

Maybe i'm basketball retarded (which is very possible), but I really don't

get this guy at all. Can someone here that knows more about this please explain what is so great about him? Seriously I woould like to hear it. I can be swayed, but other than great size and length at his position what is so great about this guy? This is not an overreaction to one game, I just want to know what he does other than getting hurt, moping around the court, disappearing in big spots (especially against good teams) and feeding homeless people. This is not a rhetorical question, I really would like someone to explain what his value is.

Just a quick aside:

every time we try to force the ball to him something bad happens. We just kill the whole flow of the offense to give him the ball around the three point line while he does fifty head fakes before settling on a jump shot from right in front of the line. Which (as of late) he misses and that leads to the other team doing all kinds of bad things to us.

anything else?

Good post

Damn, scotter had it spot on, someone reccomend him to paxson so he can get a job fixing the coaching staffs mistake (although will his first act be getting rid of kirk….that would suck…for basically just me.)

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....

There is

nothing good about him (Dung) he sucks! Seriously we paid 70 million for a broke a@# jump shot. He’s totally not athletic enough to hang with any decent sf. This guy is a bum i would trade him in a heart beat for a guy like Gerald Wallace. The Bulls got hosed because Lou is a good character guy! who cares he sucks i cant stand watching him play. Id start the chucker ahead of him anyways. He doesnt fit with D Rose anyways. Move on Denger we dont need you or that broke jump shot.

Lol, that was a very good post

and I do understand his value better now, although he seems to have gotten worse in the areas hat scotter mentions. That’s my only beef. Maybe defenses are playing him differently or the system doesn’t work for him, but he doesn’t seem as effective or efficient with his mid range game anymore. Also, he’s about to get the “injury prone” tag, there seems to always be something wrong with this guy health wise. I really do hope he turns it around though.

if he keeps getting hurt, and all of a sudden has his FG% drop 10 points

then yes, it’s a problem.

Basically, after Rose, Deng is currently least of the Bulls' worries.

He’s signed for six years. He’ll be around plenty long enough for them to figure out what to do with him and if he fits in this new system, etc.

For this year, let Deng be Deng or not be Deng. Don’t worry about him or the contract. Worry about Gordon and his contract. Or Gooden and his situation. Or Thomas or Noah or Hinrich or Nocioni. Don’t worry about Deng.

By the way, that post only mentioned offense. Deng is a somewhat underrated defender.

Viva la nuance! Reading comprehension rules!!!

He's not cutting as well as he used to.

As others have mentioned part of it is a negative product of Deng playing as the star for Great Britain in the summer and Deng trying to become a go-to player. A point I’ve made before is that when players try to expand their game it can often lead to less effective play.

Deng has been good because
*He scores lots of points in the paint with a strong FG%, despite being labeled
*He doesn’t need the ball to be effective offensively
*He’s a good offensive rebounder for a SF

*His defense is also historically solidly above-average
-He plays non-highlight defense, and usually forcing guys to work for their
           offense and take tough shots,
         -he’s an above-average rebounding SF

I thought he meant soft

Asked what kind of player he expects to be in the next five years, he said: "Not a star, but like, a superstar. Something around, like, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, something like that."

Would you

trade Hinrich and Deng for Howard, Stackhouse, and Devean George?

by J Theory on Nov 19, 2008 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

meh, likely not

Howard’s 5 years older than Deng

Prior to this injury

I started to notice Deng seems to be starting to go stronger to the paint. In Indiana, he looked more comfortable in this new offense.

by gman2849 on Nov 19, 2008 6:13 PM CST reply actions

a funny aside

I jacked up all the stats of the bulls players in 2k9 and DESPITE that Noah finishes around the rim like he does in real life! too funny
