Game Preview #11 - Chicago Bulls at Los Angeles Lakers

[Thanks to California Al for tonight's game preview. KC has some pregame notes: Gooden is going to start after tweaking his ankle in practice, and Deng will guard Kobe. My prediction (in general): pain. -ed.]

Here's hoping we can kick off the circus trip with a (gasp) three game win streak.  I mentioned in another thread the new Lakers defense Phil's implemented this year, and it's explained well here.  What I like about it is the same thing I liked about D'Antoni's or Nellie's offenses: it's real aggressive and engages all five players with the opportunities to make plays, get on ESPN, pad stats, and all of the other fun things that players like to do.  Not a hard sell.

Kurt at Lakers Blue and Gold has a much more eloquent preview than I'm capable of, but considering his usually outstanding work, I don't know how he put Gordon in our frontcourt; I'm sure he meant Deng.  He also gave major props to Matt (well-deserved, of course), and points out some very revealing stats about the weak defensive performance of our frontcourt.  For a good read, go here.

Again, I wouldn't freak out about how BG is going to matchup on Kobe.  More than likely, they'll play the triangle and try to exploit the frontcourt matchups early.  If we're still in it after three, then we can worry about Kobe.

I have bad feelings about this one...

Think it might get ugly

Here’s hoping it doesn’t

by BAB-Bass on Nov 18, 2008 3:57 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

you might be right

last season, the game played in LA got real ugly, which ended in a 28 pt loss. The game in Chicago was a little closer, but the same result.

We don’t really have the starters or the bench to be able to keep up.

Historically, Ben hasn’t done that well against them, with his best game being in his rookie year…so it will be interesting to see what happens tonight, since he’s been playing great as of late.

The Pistons were able to beat the Lakers.

While playing smaller lineups with AI beating the guards off the dribble and spreading the floor with Rasheed hanging out near the line…they also used Kwame’s physical strength to bother Bynum on the inside…we can spread the floor with Noc, Rose can get into the lane and Aaron Gray can move Bynum on the inside. To win by following the Detroit blueprint, we will need a solid defensive effort from everyone, but especially our big men.

We should be able to follow their blueprint

We don’t exactly have guys who clog the lane. A spread-out, spaced offense plays to our desire to put up jumpshots. Add an actual dribble-penetration PG like Rose and we should be able to emulate what Detroit did on the offensive side of the ball

anything to get Noce & Gray on the floor huh? :-)

Nah…I can see putting Noce out there, because as you said, he might help spread the floor. However, Phil has had Noc’s number the last several games (pts…4, 4, 4, 8, 9). In other words, Noc pretty much sucks against the Lakers and I don’t see a change magically happening tonight.

Gray should see no part of the floor tonight. He will get out-ran by Gasol and get out-powered by Bynum. He will get destroyed. No Gray.

by NormVanBeer on Nov 18, 2008 6:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But Noce didn't have...

DRose in those games. Seriously, I think Noce has benefited the most from DRose’s brilliance. Here’s to hoping he can have a great game tonight coz he’s been swinging from good game to bad game like a freaking pendulum.

Deng on Kobe tonight!

KC Reports

What Del Negro wouldn’t say is who would start defensively against Kobe Bryant, though Deng has been told he will get the assignment.

Good to see KC coming off as an idiot again
Bryant and Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy, whom the Bulls face Wednesday, present the first large backcourt challenges since Gordon and Rose began starting together.

Did he forget about Joe Johnson already? Or did he just “accidentally” leave it out since he didn’t do much against our “small” backcourt?

I’m really sick of his snide comments relating to BG’s height. It’s damn annoying, especially coming from the team’s primary beat writer.

KC hates Gordon

Since BG turned down the contract that the Bulls offered to him, that KC seems to be annoyed with him. Every time he writes about BG is in a criticize mode. So, you shouldn’t expect anything good from KC when BG is the subject…

I never remember

KC having a good thing to say about Gordon even before this summer. I think he has a few phrases about Gordon he wrote up seasons back and copy/pastes them into what he is writing that week. Which is often what sports writers do…just not so much about their home team guys. He not only has it out for him he is also a lazy ass. And guys like that stick around a long time.

For real B

The Gordon hate just keeps on flowing from KC’s fingertips.

Joe Johnson was not that effective with Gordon guarding him. Admittedly, the Hawks did not have to go to him because they had such nice leads, but when they did Johnson was still jacking up jumpers which is exactly what you want him to do.

Laker fan who said it best IMO
DR looks sensational so far. Like CP3, he’s young, athletic, and very crafty. Watch for the eurostep, and watch for the beautiful hesitation dribble.

I appreciate Odom’s saltiness and emotion this year, and I’m expecting a good fight against Nocioni tonight.

I think the outcome of this game comes down to two factors. How well the Lakers trap DR, and the quality of decisions DR makes in the teeth of the Laker defense.

There's no way

Aaron Gray will see the floor for any meaningful minutes right? He can’t guard Bynum/Gasol (well neither can Noce/Gooden but that’s a different story) and would be horrible in the fast-paced game that this is sure to be.

The Lakers and Portland

are match up nightmares for us – those big folks down low are just going to feast on us. Still, the Bulls have become fun again, so I’m down. :)

Let Kobe score

I would almost dare him to shoot. When was the last time we beat the Lakers in LA? It was the last time Kobe put up 40+

daring kobe to shoot jumpers is a nice strategy

but only if you have a great zone inside stopping him from getting inside

Which is obviously not our case

by CJOliveira on Nov 18, 2008 6:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

only do this

if Ben is ON. Even then, I’m not so sure. Letting/daring Kobe to shoot isn’t the best idea. It’s not like he’s a terrible shooter. I’d use this strategy with LeBron before I would with Kobe.

If Ben is on, then that might at least offset some of what Kobe does…but letting Kobe shoot, especially if Ben and/or everyone else is having a cold night…bad idea.

Have fun!

I doubt Rose will disappoint, but the rest of the team — who knows. If they fight it out it should at least be enjoyable.

A loss will clearly suck

But if they can keep this game competitive and our frontcourt doesn’t look too incompetent tonight I’ll be satisfied. Baby steps!

For those who have Dish Network, the game is being telecast free on channel 402 NBA-TV

Is there any chance Tyrus will play meaningful minutes tonight, and if so what are his chances of success? As I mentioned in a prior blog, if he doesn’t show some progress soon, I may change my screen name to DoubtingThomas, until he shows me my initial crush was not due to just a temporary tingle triggered by his brief highlight moments which are becoming rare this season. Was it love or merely infatuation?

Stupid pregame comments by Gary Payton/Chris Webber

Payton said….“Where Ben Gordon, Luol Deng, Nocioni?
"They ain’t showing up, Nocoioni was the man 2 years ago ….he ain”t showing up"
Upon which Webber cogently replied…..“I dunno.”

All 3 have had pretty solid offensive games recently..
Do these bozo’s ever look at any game stats before they display their ignorance?

Payton, well he can talk, but that’s about it.

We will win tonight

I’m very sure we will win. The Lakers defense is starting to show some big holes.
Their offense isn’t as crisp as last year. Bynum isn’t the big strong center advertised in the pre-season and Kobe has lost more than one step.
