Last stuff I read on it said we were about 8 mil below before the BG qual offer signing. 8ish minus 6.4 equals 1.5 to 2.

I will give my best capologist impersonation.

Best I can tell from various salary sources, signing this deal will put the Bulls just into the Luxury Tax…The Bulls are responsible for the pro-rated amount of Hunter’s salary of vet’s minimum of $719,373, or $649,190…The project Tax threshold is $71.15M and the Bulls team salary is currently (counting the pro-rated Hunter) $71.195M. So we are $45k over the tax, but its not a big deal because Nichols’ contract is not guaranteed, so we can waive to save the additional $$$.

From Steve Weinman @ CelticsBlog

blockquote>Hunter is a true ball hawk in every sense. This is a guy who has no problem putting the pressure on full from the second he gets on the court until he leaves it. He rags opposing ball-handlers from coast to coast, occasionally teaching opponents the hard way that they should avoid lackadaisical inbounds passes and attempts to walk the ball up floor. Hunter is reputed to have great strength for a 6-2, 170-pound point guard, and he uses his body effectively to make up for the quickness that he has lost over the years.

Hunter forces the ball out of opposing point guards’ hands, and he is particularly useful against reserve combo guards running the point who have less-than-superb ball-handling skills. He can make life in the backcourt a nightmare for those players, forcing either rushed offense, turnovers or a shorter rest than anticipated for the opposing starters. All of these are benefits for Hunter’s team. Though his sample size was small with Detroit last season, it’s worth remembering that the Pistons were 2.1 points better per 100 possessions defensively with Hunter on the floor than without him. He also held opposing point guards to just 46.8 percent effective field goal shooting in that span.

Lindsey Hunter may be 37 years old, but he is the consummate professional and the provider of a rare mix of experience and skill set in today’s NBA. He has played in 141 playoff games and won two NBA titles. While he might not have loomed large in the box scores for many of those games, this is a man who made his presence felt when he got on the floor. At the veteran’s minimum, it’s hard to believe he won’t be getting a shot to get on the floor again somewhere this season.

I remember watching him his rookie year, dude was lightning fast.

Thought his knickname should be Hurricane Hunter.
Must still be pretty fast to stay in the league for so long.

Funny, watching how fast DRose is, I thought…the last time I remember being wowed by speed was Hunter. He’s never had the hops or shot that DRose has, but Hunter has been a pretty good backup in the league.

I was going to say I don't get this right now...

…especially w/ Hughes coming back. I was hoping this was maybe an indication that the Bulls don’t like Hughes as much as everyone pretends. I guess this does make sense as an insurance sign for Rose getting hurt. Or Hughes getting hurt again.

Having only Gordon, Sefolosha and Hughes as the guards, even for only a few games, would be utterly disastrous.

by tyger1147 on Nov 13, 2008 12:13 PM CST reply actions

That's the only reason i see us signing Hunter

Why the hell would the bulls want another guard, when we complained so much of having a ton of guards and don’t having enough minutes to play them all?

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

by bull83 on Nov 13, 2008 12:49 PM CST up reply actions

I guess I'm not too sure

I understand everyone’s excitement. Lindsey had less than mop-up duties last season.

I guess his straw was pulled in the “Old guy free agent point guard” sweepstakes between him, Darrell Armstrong, and Damon Stoudemire.

It’s “meh” for me…but hopefully he can bring something (not quite sure what) to the table.

by NormVanBeer on Nov 13, 2008 12:24 PM CST reply actions

I agree.

I mean, why the heck is he here? My guess is that it’s not to be “lightning quick” and take the ball to the rack or play major minutes. I think it’s pure insurance in case they go into a game and end up not being able to get the ball past half court (Thabo). Or in case of injury.

Paxson isn't happy

if he doesn’t have at least three small guards(under 6’3") suited up and ready to play.

Small ball makes him feel warm and cozy…. I wanted to replace “ball” with “balls”, but I think not.

by exult463 on Nov 13, 2008 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

He is here

because Derrick Rose is the future of this franchise and he absolutely does not need to be playing nearly 40 mpg. With Hinrich out, this had to be done because both Hughes and BG are incompetent floor-generals. Even if Hunter plays 6 mpg, that takes rose down closer to 30 mpg rather than 40 mpg, and that will do wonders for his health both in the short term and more importanly in the long run.

Good signing.

i think we all understand

WHY he was signed. What I don’t get is everyone going crazy over it. About how he is “lightening quick” and how he will "play good minutes’.

I expect nothing more than 5 minutes per half of him simply managing the game. No lightening quick moves, not much scoring, if at all…not much of anything. Pretty much as if Duhon were back.

Observer...

At least we agree on something :)

by JacksonM on Nov 13, 2008 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

So this means they don't trust Thabo or Hughes' defense?

I like the signing. It’s not like he deserves routine minutes like Kirk, but he’s still an intelligent player who can give us spot duty at the PG spot and play solid (and he gets away with a lotttt of cheap crap) defense. Besides, we need a token vet “leader” in the locker room.

The article on ESPN.com also cites Hunter's defensive specialty

here. And I agree that at least Thabo and maybe Hughes are or have the ability to be pretty good defensively. So that’s why I don’t see this as a big deal in any way. The Bulls get more of what they already have. Guards who can defend. (Go get your jollies thinking about that, Paxdorf.)

Meanwhile, I’m wondering what it would take for the Bulls to sign a big man who specializes in offense. Can Shareef un-retire? Mo Taylor? Chris Gatling? Anyone?

Shouldn’t this spot have already been filled by an old big man who can make a jump shot!?

by smash! on Nov 13, 2008 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

eh, probably not

More like they don’t trust Thabo or Hughes’ ball handling to cross the timeline. We need a guy that knows to receive the in bounds pass when the opponent makes a shot. Gordon can do it, but the offense is better when he doesn’t have to do it.

Decreased our trade flexibility

Basically, the signing Hunter for some set of games will reduce our trade flexibility because we accrue more salary against the LT threshold.

So if we cut him after 10 games, for example, we only pay him $97k. However, that $97k counts against our cap, and we already have only a couple hundred thousand worth of flexibility we might need to make a trade work.

So for those of you who think this might herald a deal, it probably heralds no deal.

by Sports2 on Nov 13, 2008 2:06 PM CST reply actions

Seeing as how a deal wasn't going to happen

Kirk being injured messes up any plans Paxson might have hand, and despite what we think I doubt Noah or Tyrus are on their way out just yet.

Really? You want Kirk traded more than anything?

I want TT to get an attitude adjustment and a clue- and if he can’t then I want to undue the 2006 draft day trade for Aldridge- more than I want Kirk traded.

Then I want Noah to put down the bong, learn how to shoot properly, learn how to JUMP, add some muscle and pick up his conditioning more than I want Kirk traded.

I’d like to see Thabo learn how to shoot consistently, gain some confidence and play up to his potential more than I want Kirk traded.

I’d like to see BG accept his role, learn how to handle the rock, and learn how to play spot-up man off of a true Point God (like Noc has done so well) more than I’d like to see Kirk traded.

I’d actually like to see Vinny get a buzz cut more than I’d like to see Kirk get traded.

I'm going to both laugh and cry

If something strange happens like we get hot and some players meet their contract incentives and force us into the luxury tax.

We wouldn’t go there to trade for Pau Gasol or sign Ben Gordon, but we’ll end up paying it to sign a 39 year old point guard.

On the bright side, that might very well be what it takes to get Pax fired.

De gustibus non est disputandum

by Sports2 on Nov 13, 2008 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

Heh, I don't either

But IIRC the various Bulls incentives aren’t quite that steep.

If I recall, Hughes got $2M a couple years ago because the Cavs won 49 games. My guess is we don’t win 49 or more games, but it we do then my understanding is another $2M gets added to the Bulls (and Hughes) salary.

Not sure what sort of incentives Deng has, but I think they’re similarly team-based.

De gustibus non est disputandum

by Sports2 on Nov 14, 2008 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not positive that's true...

We do have a ~$5 mil trade exception courtesy of sending Joe Smith to CLE last year.

Check it at the trade machine.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/trademachine

I know those things have time limits and there are other things that add trickiness(like all the BYC deals we gave our guys, specifically Hinrich)… but I think the trade exception might mitigate that?

Does anyone know the salary cap rules well enough to comment definitively on this?

by JacksonM on Nov 13, 2008 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

the issue isn't whether they can literally take on more money

it’s that they practically can’t, due to the luxury tax. It’s not a hard cap, just in Reinsdorf’s eyes.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Nov 13, 2008 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

I guess a more specific question would be...

How do trade exceptions work, exactly?

My understanding is that they allow a team to take on more salary in a trade than they normally would. Does that salary count against the cap or does the exception erase it? So if we took on a little more salary on a trade where we used some or all of the exception would that put us over the luxury tax threshold or not?

Interesting that NBA owners are so unwilling to go over this(bye bye, possible Phoenix title) while some baseball owners are. Maybe that’s just Steinbrenner, though…

by JacksonM on Nov 13, 2008 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

The extra salary we'd take by using the trade exception still counts against the cap and LT.

Trade exceptions let you throw out the normal trade rules but the normal cap rules are still in effect.

De gustibus non est disputandum

by Sports2 on Nov 13, 2008 2:47 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

And really

Why blame Reinsdorf for making it his own hard cap? Isn’t $71M good enough for 1 GM to make a very viable team/contender.

I mean if we were a contender and ran the risk of having everyone bolt, sure….but to take on luxury tax for a risky move to appease the fans (and believe me no trade isn’t without risks unless you are Danny Ainge and somehow get Ray Allen for a #5 pick project—seriously when does crap like that happen and if things like that were available to Paxson over all our draft picks, I can’t believe he did nothing.

I would love the big market Bulls to go into the luxury tax because in comparison we’re doing very very well, but why do it if the team still won’t be in the championship title threat realm?

by majoyenrac on Nov 13, 2008 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

we've been over this a bunch before

but basically, because they fouled up the Ben Wallace signing (and especially if that was Reinsdorf’s idea), then you have to pay the tax to get out from under it.
