DallasBasketball.com: Bulls to sign Lindsey Hunter?

No idea how credible:

The Mavs continue to tell me that they don’t need backup point-guard help. I keep arguing that they’re wrong, pointing to how inefficient Dallas is when Jason Kidd isn’t on the floor. There are now reports (guesses?) that have Dallas engaging in conversation with former Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter, who is a free agent. But if you are a betting man, take my advice and assume that Hunter won’t be playing for Dallas on Thursday – but that instead he’ll be playing against them.

That’s right. I’m told the Bulls – presently playing without the injured Heinrich and Hughes and desperately thin at guard as they prepare to host the Mavs tomorrow – are confident they will sign Hunter today.

Maybe the use of 'Heinrich' is enough for a DQ?

Hunter can't really play anymore, but he does defend. Most assumed he'd play in Detroit or bust. I dunno, I suppose whatever 'vet leadership' and defense is better than rolling the dice with Darius Washington, considering the youth of the starting PG.

I wouldn't mind Hunter for 5-10 minutes a game

And unlike Adrian Griffin, he would provide vet leadership from someone who has actually played meaningful minutes and is actually a veteran (as opposed to a journeyman/coach/disciplinarian). Plus he would move the ball and probably/hopefully/praying take minutes away from Larry the Chucker.

Plus he play's good defense.

He would make a great back up/mentor to Rose

IF we are going to actually be making some trades.

My understanding is the Bulls are very close to the luxury tax threshold

By my counting, they’ve got about $500k until they hit the luxury tax threshold. A yearlong contract to Hunter would cost $798k. However, if they sign him to a non-guaranteed deal and then waive him later, they only have to pay a pro-rated portion of that for every game he plays.

However, there are a couple considerations:
1. Deng, Kirk, and I believe Hughes all have some sort of incentives in their contracts. I don’t know exactly what they are, but the Bulls presumably do and wouldn’t risk paying the luxury tax based on them.

2. Taking on salary further reduces the Bulls’ trade flexibility.

Except vet's minimum contracts are partially reimbursed by the league.

Not sure exactly how this affects Hunter given his tenure…I am pretty sure the Bulls will not go into the tax for Hunter.

Hunter would actually make something on the order of $1.2M annually. T

The $798k figure is what the Bulls would be responsible for and the league would pay the rest.

If he were waived on an NG deal after playing only a few games, the Bulls would only pay the pro-rated portion of $798k while the league would pay the pro-rated remainder.

Good to know.

I wonder if Nichols has a fully guaranteed contract, because we could waive him to create the necessary space to sign Hunter…

Oh Yeah -

Darius Washington would be a great pick up, but he is not available, he signed to play with a Russia Super League club.

When I read "desperately"

I know this isn’t true. How can the Bulls be desperate when they got Thabo on the bench and Hughes coming back soon?

I'm Down...

With Lindsay. Maybe we can even sub him in in late-game defensive situations for BG so someone actually rotates to open shooters on time.

If the luxury tax is not actually an issue, I don’t see the harm in taking a flyer on him. He always gave Detroit good minutes. Maybe Stuckey’s emergence was the real reason Detroit let him go?

it's by design

remember, the Bulls feel a psychological advantage knowing their best players are on the bench.

Haha

I guess I was considering a situation where we were up by 3 and defending a lead. :)

Rare as that is.
