B.J. for three.... KABOOM!

Thabo is playing a good game tonight.

Scoring when available…making good passes…all around contribution.

agreed, he's played his best game by far.

Of course, as I say that he just woefully missed a wide open three from the corner. I’ll just shut up now.

def a good game

He’s starting to mess with Rose pretty good..not great, but the #1 and #2 jerseys make it pretty rad..bahhaha

What i like about the Grizz

Is they aren’t wasting their time playing 10 guys. Just pick 8, give the starting 5 a lot of minutes and that way players can get into a rhythm.

by CJ Bulls on Nov 1, 2008 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

I think the foul trouble

might have them rotating people in more than they normally would. Can’t have young guys foul out you know. Not sure why…but that seems to be the leading theory on the matter.

It's good thing their working on that Gordon-Hinrich back court.

You know, to see how it works. Since the past 4 seasons didn’t really give a good indication.

Why not try to get Derrick Rose 35 points when he’s playing probably the worst defensive PG’s in the league? I hate Del Negro. (Okay, that’s overreacting)

I just re-watched.

They were not back to back…Noc missed a 3 and Tyrus travelled between the two chucks…the point I was making is in consecutive touches for Gordon he took bad shots.. its a problem when a player is looking for his own shot in those types of situations…there was no need to force up a bad shot.

He thinks he’s the fifth guard (based on Del Negro’s comments) on the team when he’s definitely not the fifth-best guard.

He played better the second half

And it’s nice to see him being involved and attacking toward the end of the game. But dude is still in a major shooting slump. I don’t mind it occasionally on the jump shooting front because it does happen, but the season is going to be a long one if our front court doesn’t start making more baskets – whether the shooting touch comes back, or they work on going inside more. And as the newly paid guy, Lu’s going to get the brunt of it.

Any analysis in these game threads tends to be major over-reactionary anyhow. People were ready to dump the whole team at the end of the first half, then they pull out a nice win and look good doing it.

Man-slave, bring me my PB&J!

by wjb1492 on Nov 1, 2008 10:15 PM CDT up reply actions

He played within himself:

slashing, rebounding, defense, shooting when open. It’s when he tries to go one-on-one that he’s not good. The hold the ball…hold it…hold it..thing rarely works.

The point of having a player like Derrick Rose is to avoid that kind of play on Luol’s part. Putting him in positions where he can have success.

I still think he and BG could really benefit.

when we are playing the World Champion Celtics, then it’s the other way. I hadn't even noticed how well Thompson was playing

A lot of people made fun of that pick because he was from a small school, but he looks like good value for the 12th pick. God knows the Kings sure need the help, because they look like the worst team in the league so far.

Just got back from the game (to the office downtown)

I can’t believe how good D-Rose is as a 20-year old rookie. Wowwowowowowowowowowowowowow. Just freakin’ sweet.

Memphis is awful – I thought the Bulls looked really bad today, and to win that game by 10-ish just illustrates how bad the Grizzlies are. Other than D-Rose (woooooooo!) didn’t see a lot to get me too geeked up for the future (given that Drew Gooden pulling down 20 boards a game isn’t a part of any of our visions of the future for this team).

Rose can take a hit better than Cedric Benson and is 3x as fast. Tommy is senile.

If (Kurt) keeps playing like this he may be a candidate for the 6th man award…sorry Ben.

I feel bad for TT. When he makes a highlight play, something bad always happens.
In the opener, his alley-oop was waved off because the official said it was in the cylinder….yeah, that’s called about twice a season on a play that close. Against the Celtics he hit the back of the iron on a spectacular alley oop which was just out of his reach, and tonight he became the only brother to be called for travelling this decade on that quick a move on his reverse layup. If LeBron had to meet that standard, he would average single digits. Poor Tyrus can’t get no love from the refs. He also was whistled for a technical on a phantom foul. But the good news, despite his brain cramp on the pass to Gordon, VDN still has allowed him to play through his mistakes, which have been mounting up in between his monster blocks.

Noce continues to provide a spark and spacing at the 4, in addition to driving the opposition to a psychiatrists couch. Deng played great defense in the 4th quarter and drove to the rim with authority. Aaron gave everything he had (which is not much), Thabo played his best game, and Gooden was possessed on the blocks. I think the Bulls can be very effective going small against certain (young inexperienced) teams. Gordon will no longer be able to claim he is the Bulls leading scorer, and I already have a place slotted in the Hall of Fame for our flower child. I still love Tyrus but someone has got to work with him to finish around the rim, at least ONCE A NIGHT!

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

i thought the oop was waved off

is having to make adjustments this season. New coaches, new star point guard, new system to learn. Why not give it a few more games before writing them off?

by sue369 on Nov 2, 2008 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

How the hell did Gooden get 20 boards?

Whatever, I won’t complain. Rose was again showing why he’s already the best player on the team. The problem is that his teammates seem to forget it, and our offense reverts back to last year’s malaise. If it wasn’t for Kirk’s solid 3 point shooting in the 1st half the game could have been a lot worse. I’m worried as to why Deng just won’t attack the rim more, especially against a terrible defensive team. His jumpers will start to fall with time, but he has to realize this team’s identity is no longer the half-court set, but a more up-tempo with an emphasis on the transition because of who is at the PG spot.

I hate to harp on Tyrus, but he needs a chill pill or something. Every time he makes a good play, he follows it with something stupid, like those bad alley-oop passes. Either the Bulls need a big man coach, or one of the assistants should take special attention to get Tyrus to be more patient.

you know what's struck me thus far?

i’ve been keeping an eye on rose’s passing, because i thought that would be one of the big factors in what type of success he’ll have this year. my conclusion? he’s passing the ball beautifully, but his assist totals aren’t where they should be. but that’s not rose’s fault. guys aren’t hitting open shots like they should be. he’s finding the open man, they’re just missing. tyrus, deng, and gooden have all been missing open 15-18 footers that they need to be making.

it might sound overly optimistic, but i honestly think rose has been playing even better than his numbers suggest. he’s taken it upon himself to score more because he has noticed that his teammates aren’t hitting the shots they need to be. they are open and rose is finding them, but they aren’t hitting so he’s prioritizing his own scoring. he’s doing it efficiently, too. once the supporting cast finds their collective stroke rose won’t have to take as many jumpshots, and his assist totals will rise along with his efficiency, then the media is really gonna go crazy for this kid.

Cashing checks and having sex.

by MarketMaker on Nov 2, 2008 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah a good PG can only rack up assists when his teammates can actually hit open shots

As Rose gets better, he will be able to find better high-percentage looks for his teammates, but as of now the 2 best offensive players (Deng and BG) are just not in a good rhythm, and Tyrus is just out of sorts. I’m not worried about a low assist total, as he was able to run an offense at Memphis that didn’t rely on him always dominating the ball just fine.

"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. by Ozzie Montana on Nov 2, 2008 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes!

Deng and BG are not at all in rhythm with Rose: BG because he’s not played with him, Deng because he’s still pressing. Additionlaly, Rose’s play hasn’t been consistent in the sense that sometimes he’s very aggressive, and sometimes he’s deferred more to his teammates. When he’s in, he should dominate the ball.

It’s not that he hasn’t been consistantly good. He has. But he’s going to need to keep growing into his role, and he’s going to need minutes with BG.

Rose quote of the night:
Rose is off to a good start, averaging a team-high 18.3 points, and his quiet demeanor makes him a natural fit on a laid-back team. It’s something he wants to change.

Why?

After seeing the Celtics, he thinks that’s the way to go.

“That was an emotional team,” he said. “They talked to each other. There wasn’t one time on the court when they weren’t talking to each other. They were having fun.”

Former coach Scott Skiles begged for a leader to emerge on the Bulls, often saying that his team was perhaps too nice. He wanted his players to show more emotion, to channel it in a positive way.

“While you’re on the court, you’ve got to be more aggressive,” Rose said.

by messwiththebull on Nov 2, 2008 1:33 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, about that quote...

I gave a little fist pump when I read that. My God, the kid just turned 20 and he’s already the leader of this team. OFFICIALLY, Kirk and Lu might be the “captains”, but every player on this team and every person in Chicago knows that Rose is the man. There are times when he’s visibly frustrated with his teammates, but it isn’t a bad thing, like he’s throwing a fit; it’s because he wants everyone to communicate with each other on the floor.

Rose makes the all-star team THIS YEAR. Hell, he might even start.

His contract, ability, Derrick’s play, and the paucity of NBA point guards suggest he won’t be a Bull past the midpoint of the season. Hope we don’t lose all our Hinrich fans on this site when that happens!

in the final quarter

gordon is a powerful weapon. In the final minutes however…well id say the jury is out on that one.
I think the original comment was more about how once we had the lead, the linup on the court was one that could defend, and gordon is one to score big, and get scored upon. Of course this bulls teams defensive ability is almost non existant (dare i say worse than thier offense?) so having bg on the court or not really doesnt make a big difference i suppose.

Also when was the last time gordon did something good in the final minutes of the game, i just can remember the knicks game (although thats more like the final seconds)

I saw it, I swear.

This is like wishing Aaron Gray’s feet weren’t made of concrete, but it’d be great if Gordon was able to draw contact like Rose. They have the same body types, but Gordon rarely gets the same calls because it always looks like he’s falling before he gets hit.

Saw some replays of one of the better plays of the night

Rose passing to the left wing to Gordon. Gordon gets a screen and attacks the rim from the left of the paint. Rose rotates right to space to keep his man out of the paint. Screener leaks to the 3pt line, Rose’s man cheats over to help, Gordon takes two men to the rim, seess the cutting Rose, makes the pass for an easy two handed flush by Rose.

The Grizzlies were playing ‘Nocioni’ help defense on the play where as whomever is the 4 doesn’t need to double but does it anyway to leave someone wide open.

Thank you Drew Gooden

We only won this game because of your rebounding.

Tyrus Thomas looks awful around the rim if he’s not dunking, but I want to lock Luol Deng in a half court room and not let him out until he dunks the ball 10,000 times from a standing two step, two foot gather. We just cannot have Deng looking like a 6’2" guard when he’s 1 foot from the rim. Dunk the basketball.

We have to shoot better and won’t start with Luol Deng taking jump shots. Attack the rim you freaking teenagers. Use your youth, and er, experience, to your advantage. You’re being guarded by the hibernating Grizzlies. WTF.

I didn't see the game

but 11 blocks, 7 steals, 43% shooting (Memphis) and only 12 turnovers. Playing D and taking care the ball, that has to be our winning formula. Other than Derrick, I don’t see a player who brings it on the offensive end consistently.

part....

…he’s still not an “excellent” passer on the level of Kidd, Nash or Paul. That’s my only point. He might be able to get there someday. If he does, he’s clearly got those three beat in other ways.

He still needs to become a better shooter and make more consistent passes, no?

We'll eventually make shots

and boost Rose’s assist totals. He’s making the good passes. Our guys just aren’t making the shots.

Scoring hasn’t come easy for some Bulls the last two games. Thomas has gone 2-for-22 from the field, Luol Deng 5-for-23 and Ben Gordon 6-for-20. The Bulls have averaged 38.5 percent shooting through three games.
