he's not comparing Deng to Ricky Davis

PER is doing the comparison.

They both shoot a lot of two-pointers, it makes sense.

Hollinger = BaB's own, Scotter???

Hollinger on Tyrus…

Most similar at age: Shawn Kemp

How bout (fan fave) Larry Hughes = Gerald Wilkins

Gerald would shyt on Larry all day IMO

From the Noah profile:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/players/hollinger?playerId=3224&action=login&appRedirect=http3a2f2finsider.espn.go.com2fnba2fplayers2fhollinger3fplayerId3d3224

Noah ranked fifth among all rookies in PER, and in retrospect it’s puzzling that he only played 20 minutes a game while the Bulls kept trotting out Ben Wallace and hoping he’d reawaken.

Um, that was puzzling to me at the time, not just in retrospect.

You're going to hate this season

when it’s chock-filled with 30mpg nights of Hughes. My hair recedes just thinking about him chucking FGs while Rose rides the bench.

by NittanyCub on Oct 9, 2008 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i like how

theres just a blank under ruffin, as if like why is he still in the league after throwing the ball up in the air thinking they won only to cause it go to MO Peterson for a buzzer beater. On other note heres C-Du’s line from last nights pre season game.

lol, Duhon

1-7 from the field and 7 turnovers. At least the NY bar scene will be getting some business.

by NBA Observer on Oct 9, 2008 10:14 AM CDT up reply actions

It's Duhon or Marbury

The Knicks still accumulated 29 assists. 111 points probably pleases D’Antoni, but the ball distribution was good. Still lots of turnovers though.

Carl Landry at #24

That’s with a healthy Yao Ming.

Gordon's Arm legnth

One of my favorite Hollinger facts is that Gordon has ‘short arms’. Funny that in pre-draft camp he measure at 6’2 with a 6’8" wingspan. Apparently arm legnth is not his defensive problem…

by Jud Buechler on Oct 9, 2008 10:36 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think the "scout's take" is Hollinger's.

He’s not a scout. I’d bet money someone else wrote that. It does, in a sense, though, take away some of his credibility to have allowed something erroneous to be published under his name. However, I don’t fault him because there’s no way he could proofread and fact-check everything.

by tyger1147 on Oct 9, 2008 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

you'd lose that money

he writes the scouting reports, or at least he wrote similar things when he was writing his prospectus (before ESPN).

No, he’s not a professional scout but some of his observations are spot on. I don’t doubt that some is just relayed info from those in the know, however. So take them for what they are.

He should check his facts, then.

I’m disappointed. It’s obviously one thing to say he’s not a good defender and give some somewhat harder-to-verify opinions why (as in, he just doesn’t move that quick laterally), but it’s another to say something that’s just plain factually wrong, and so easily verifiable.

I can only comment on standing reach (which correlates with wingspan)

But Gordon has an above average standing reach for a player of his height, not a big one, but guys who are an inch taller have similar standing reaches

by Jamaicanpi on Oct 9, 2008 11:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Median or "average".

For a normal person, I think it’s about the same as height. Obviously, NBA’ers are longer.

Gordon listed at 6’1" w/o shoes (this is obviously the more relevant measurement here).
There are 10 guys from 6’0" – 6’2" in his draft class. Gordon has a 6’8.5" wingspan. The average of those 10 is 6’7.65". He’s a little above-average. The average wingspan of 47 players from 6’0" – 6’2" w/o shoes from the drafts of 2004-2008 is 6’6.25". His arms are definitely not “short.”

Chris Paul was 5’11.75" w/o shoes and a 6’4.25" wingspan. Derron Williams was 6’1.75" w/o shoes and a 6’6.25" wingspan.

I should add....

…w/o looking at the names, we could probably safely assume that half/most/whatever of the guys in that height range aren’t in the NBA right now. So I admit that Gordon probably isn’t 2" above average for his height among starters. Even if all the guys who haven’t made it are those w/ arms shorter than the average, I still don’t think it goes above Gordon’s wingspan.

He’s probably “shorter” in “basketball height” than most SG’s, but not to guard PG’s. When the Bulls had their PG (Hinrich, of course) guard Gordon’s man, he did okay (not great, but okay) guarding the PG’s man. When Hinrich had, by far, his worst defensive season, and they occasionally tried switching him to guarding PG’s like TJ Ford and Chris Paul (which showed disaster at times), Gordon suffered as well.

I think Hinrich and Gordon have complemented each other well. But when both faltered last year, they both fell hard.

The Gooden/Tyrus combo

looks to be just a touch above average according to Hollinger. For a position that has been a weakness for years, that gives us some hope.

by Mike Mueller on Oct 9, 2008 1:13 PM CDT reply actions

And both

of them have every incentive to have a good year between playing for a contract and proving themselves. It will be interesting to see how things look tonight.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 9, 2008 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

So Gordon has the wingspan of someone 6'3.25"

If he works on how high he can jump and get that above average too, his height won’t be a “liability” anymore.
