Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Consistency is going to come with consistent minutes,'' he said. ''You can't play 30 minutes three nights in a row, then play five minutes and say, 'He's inconsistent.' I feel like if I get the opportunity, I can show it for long stretches. You've seen me come into the United Center and do it for five, six games in a row. Then I don't play for five or six games. To me, that's not inconsistency, it's just a lack of opportunity.

Skeptical, but says Tyrus does indeed seem like a changed guy.

though it's odd that the first half is spent saying Tyrus looks better

then the 2nd half is ‘where do they get post scoring?’ and Tyrus isn’t mentioned.

Lets remember though

that Tryus is not a post scorer. He is not strong enough or big enough to establish position on the block. He will get most of his points by shooting from mid range and driving to the bucket, the rest will come from alley oops and running the break.

it's an unnecessary distinction

the goal is to get high-percentage shot attempts. If Tyrus can get that through transition and lobs in the half-court set, it works just as well as a beheamoth-launched jump-hook.

And Tyrus does have a post move or two, but you’re right his lack of strength means he has to start his moves farther from the basket.

Agreed.

Tryus can infact solve the high percentage buckets problem with his (hopeful) improvement during this offseason. But the reason for a post scorer is two fold. One is the aformentioned high percentage shots. The other is to draw a double team in the low post and create open shots for the perimeter guys. Which gets harder the farther out he gets the ball because you start to lose spacing. Thats the point that I was trying to make.

that is key

though I think the hope is that Rose creates the same defensive rotation that a double-teamed-big-man would, by driving to the rim. Though both options would be nice.

Also, according to this article Tyrus has significantly bulked up. So perhaps he can establish better position.

With that we would end up looking much like New Orleans.

With Rose playing Paul, Tryus playing West, and Noah playing Chandler. Not a bad offense to imitate if you have ther personnel

Can he score in the low post?

It’s the big question mark I have noted for Tyrus this season. We have seen some moves that are good, but many that appear out of control.

I do think consistent minutes will help him find his progress. It does all start with minutes. How many guys in the league can develop a low post game with only 15 minutes night?

by NBA Observer on Oct 8, 2008 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

It also depends on how Tyrus approaches scoring in the post.

He seemed desperate to show everything he could do at times. If he settles down and simplifies what he wants to do on the block, he can score. He needs to trust and establish his right handed jump hook, especially when he’s on the right block. Establish that one move and shot that can’t be blocked and then build slowly from there. He’s not going to back anyone down, but if he uses his quickness to beat his man to the spot and his teammates actually get him the ball on time then he doesn’t have to back his guy down.

Sports Nite

had an interview with TT and he really seems so focused and it seems to me that he is more mature. They interviewed Kirk about TT and he said Tyrus has really put in a lot of effort this summer and it shows in his work. I’m really excited to see TT play tomorrow night.

oh man

there is a game tomorrow, isn’t there? I’m not sure I’m ready for the mayhem.

Did you see the amount of comments on BE for Oden's debut last night?

Ridiciulousness. Last I saw it was 1200+ comments and still going.

I saw his

+/- for that game. The guy looks great. Good for them.

Dude was flashing some sick drop steps in the post and throwing down some crushing dunks.

I’m happy for him. Last year’s injury was unfortunate and he seems like a great guy.

It ended up being 1350 comments

And as a Blazer fan, I gotta say, it wasn’t ridiculous. The correct term is Rudyculous (a Mortimerism). By the end of the game, the network slowed down something fierce. Unless the SBN techies do something to deal with the traffic, game day threads are going to be frustrating as hell.

I’m very curious to see how young Mr. Thomas does this year.

Rudyculous might be a worse term than Pritchslap.

Ugh.

I saw that as well.

Looks like the media is shifting from negative to positive on Tyrus. For now at least. Hopefully it is because Tyrus has improved so drastically and not because they see an new target in Noah.

I could see the change happen in TT when he went to the finals to watch Big Baby.

People with GREAT potential that seems to be unrealized often never get there unfortunately. The exceptions are when that person has an epiphany. It usually just all of a sudden clicks. “Hey, I want this and I can have it if I work.” Or, they just finally see there path. I got excited when I read TT talking about Rose being drafted and how obviously excited he was to play with him. And then to show up for Summer league just to get more time in with Derrick is a great sign. I’m excited to see Rose and TT become a mix between Paul and Chandler and Amare and Nash. Somewhere in-between.

I think Tyrus really missed PJ Brown last year

PJ is a NBA vet that’s well traveled and understands the nature of the business, succeeding, and building a stellar reputation as a professional. Big Baby was able to play with Garnett, PJ, and Ray Allen. These three guys are a few of the smartest, most professional hard working players in the NBA.
