Blog a Bull - Put Up or Shut Up - NBA Predictions (w/poll)

Every single NBA site has an area where people put their NBA predictions.  Time to hop on the bandwagon.  Commentary provided, when moved to.

East

1.  Boston - The Champs.  Allen won't be as good, but Rondo will be better as will Perkins.

2.  Detroit - The young guys will keep them tough in the regular season.  The old guys will make sure they disappoint in the playoffs.

3.  Cleveland - I expect Lebron to have a huge year on both ends.  I got the feeling at the end of the Boston series, he knew with just a little bit of help, he would be champion.  Mo Williams may be enough.  James MVP.

4.  Philadelphia - I'm not sold on Iguodala.  But great team chemistry goes far, and Brand will sure up their half-court offense.

5.  Toronto - I don't know who the 5th best team is.  But the Raptors got J'Oneal and will now start the best point guard on their team and play him full time.  On the other hand, I think some of there guys spent a good deal of last year playing over their heads.

6.  Miami Heat - Wade is healthy and motivated.  That may be enough.  They also got Beasley who should also be good.  I think they will be fine at C because Haslem will play their with Marion and Beasley at the 3 and 4.  The only thing that worries is point guard and why they are so desperate to move Marion.

7.  Orlando - Howard is a beast.  That is all

8.  Chicago Bulls - D. Rose will play better than expected.  I don't think he will be a huge assist guy right off the bat, but he will score, push the ball and get to the free throw line.  I think Hinrich and Deng will have bounce-back seasons.  Tyrus and Gooden will continue to be a tough-tough duo at the 4.  If Noah can play with consistency and VDN figures out that Hughes and Sefo don't need to play at all, Chicago could be good.

9. Washington Wizards - They don't play defense.  They always have injuries.  I don't think their young guys are ready to contribute.  The East got better.

10.  Indiana - They are going to regret that Bayless for Rush trade.  Eventually.

11.  Charlotte -  They could be better.  Underrated talent and now they have a coach.

12.  Atlanta - They were horrible the last 20 games of the season, which many people seem to forget.  Bibby isn't the answer at point.

13.  New York - Stephon Marbury is crazy.  This roster doesn't fit what D'Antoni wants to do, no matter what he says.

14.  Milwaukee -  Veterans hate Scott Skiles.  Enter Redd and Jefferson, who are 2 underrated pouters. Plus Redd, Villanueva and Bogut haven't played D since they came into the NBA.  And Ridnour is their answer at point? Or maybe I just hate Skiles.

15.  New Jersey - It is going to be an ugly year.  Especially after Vince Carter quits on the team in December.

Playoffs: Boston over Chicago, Detroit over Orlando, Cleveland over Miami, Philadelphia over Toronto.  Boston over Philadelphia, Cleveland over Detroit.  Cleveland over Boston in 7.

West

1.  Lakers - the deepest team in the west.  Interior and perimeter talent.  And the Zen.

2.  Houston - They went on a 22 game win streak without Yao.  Add Artest pretending to be sane for a season and you have a 60 win team.

3. Utah - Great balance.  Deron Williams is the man.  Boozer and Okur aren't tough enough on D for them to challenge the Lakers or Houston.

4.  New Orleans - Chris Paul is the man.  But they will take a step back, despite Posey.  Too many things went right last year.  They aren't going to sneak up on anyone this season.

5.  San Antonio - They usually win in odd number years.  Not this time.  Not enough talent around Duncan, Parker, and Ginobli.  And is Duncan losing a step?  Ginobili is definitely losing some hair.

6.  Phoenix - They will undoubtedly have some growing pains switching to a new offense with some new players.  But will pay off in the playoffs?  Probably not.

7.  Portland - If Oden is healthy, they will be a top 7 team in the west.  If he gets injured, they will struggle to finish 10th.  A lot of pressure on Roy.  I see a lot of 3rd guards, no true point guards.  They should take Nocioni off our hands, just for the hell of it.

8. Dallas - So the players hated Avery's discipline, so they hired Carlisle?!?  I would put Golden State here but their point guard rides mopeds or some crap.  Nowitki is underrated and hard to spell.  Howard is solid but should stop speaking.

9.  Golden State - See Dallas.  Underrated talent on the inside with Bierdens and Wright.

10. Denver -  I like Denver.  I just don't know how committed to winning they are.  If Nene has a good year in the middle they could do better than expected.

11.  Clippers - In my opinion you can shake up 7-11 in the west, and they could come out any way.  They are 11th, because I don't think Camby wants to be there or that B. Davis wants to be there without Brand.

12.  Sacramento - They have one above average player.  Good luck Kevin Martin.

13.  Memphis - Rudy Gay will have a big year.  OJ Majo will prove to be a good, but not great player.  Conley will continue to disappoint.

14.  Minnesota - I'm intrigued, but skeptical of Love. I don't know much, but I know this is a terrible team.

15.  Oklahoma City - But the Thunder is worse.

Playoffs: Lakers over Dallas, Houston over Portland, Phoenix over Utah, New Orleans over San Antonio.  Lakers over New Orleans, Houston over Phoenix.  Lakers over Houston in 6.

Damn it.  Laker over Cleveland in 7.  Bryant versus James.  Kobe wins Finals MVP but Gasol and Bynum are the difference.

How do you guys think the NBA Season will turn out?

Man this was good

I liked your logic, but moreso i liked the entertaining way you wrote it all. I choose lakers to win it all, with a healthy bynum they wont be so soft in the middle the way they were with gasol. Plus kobe was so close he could taste it, he may not have as extreme as a winning mentalilty as kg, but make no mistake he wants to win. Lebron might get mvp, and might be arguably the best player this year, but make no mistake, the lakers have by far the better team, the better coach, and the best window to win the ship.

Bulls will be a wild card, i see a rocky start, media second guessing everything, and wierd rotations at first, but if the season moves along and things get smoother, then the season is a success. If not…then ill supply the dynamite to blow this sucker up.

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....

I'm not sold on Bynum staying healthy.

Add to that a bit of a slow start because they need to figure out how the pieces fit. Add to that how Kobe was such a surprising non-factor in the Finals last year (no extra level at all; I was blown away). Add the final ingredient (LeBron’s hunger), and I don’t see how Cleveland doesn’t win this thing. Are they the best team? No. But I wouldn’t want to play them in the playoffs. Just a feeling. The best team doesn’t always win (which is why I’m holding out a little bit of hope for the Bulls).

I'm not sold on

The Heat, Raptors, or Sixers.

Bulls!

No, really, Celtics, but you know, we’re on a bulls blog, I had to vote for ’em. Good luck and so forth.

I get and agree with the west but

the east is way off. I am a hardcore fan of the bulls, i am after all my fathers son. But i will give you boston winning the best record in the east but i think the bulls can beat anyone of the others. Lebron and his cavs have been head to head with the bulls over the years. If we can get the young ones to start and get through the first ten games of growing pains i expect the bulls to finish second in the east. why? Ben and Gooden are entering contracat years and ben deng is happy and set. Kirk is going to back back with a passion. i cant wait till thursday to see the first pre season game. by the way blogabulling is second to none well maybe to my wife

"Sefo Doesn't Need to Play at All"

i’ll agree with you on Hughes, but Thabo?

I don’t get it.

i would rather play eight guys than nine

Assuming Hinrich, Rose, Deng, Gooden, and Noah start. That leaves Gordon, Thomas and Nocioni off the bench. Sefo can get spot minutes, but I don’t see any reason to force him in the line-up because he’s young. I think the Bulls can win this year. Waiting for Sefo to develop isn’t a priority.

Here's my put up or shut up...based mostly on Power rankings as we hit post season

Not based on records per se.

I might just do the East or at least will start with the East….

EAST
1) Celtics—one damn tough out, even after Posey. KG-Allen-Pierce were better than even expected in yr1. Powe might improve too, he looked great in stretches. Rondo proved a better PG than folks thought, and is a crafty defender. I still hate Doc Rivers, and likely will still ahte him, but this is one solid team that should have 1 more solid year. I do think the Lakers nab the championship though…..and predict the Celtics as the 3rd best team come the start of the playoffs (Lakers-Hornets-Celtics).

2) Raptors. I think Jermaine O’Neal if healthy couldn’t have gone to a better team, pairing him with Bosh makes them the best frontcourt in the league (as long as O’Neal’s healthy as they say at at least 85-90% of his former self). Having Calderon and all the softy shooters, seems a perfect mix. Chris Bosh is an MVP candidate, if this works. I’m taking a risk putting them this high, but all I see is a perfect fit for O’Neal’s defense paired with Bosh’s all around game.

3) Pistons. Yeah I know, I’m tired of them, but they’ll still be one tough out, and with Stuckey and Maxiel coming along, they might have enough to be the best in the Central yet again. I don’t think they’ll get past the ECF though.

4) Magic. If Dwight Howard improves just a shade, they’ll be great….Hedo might have had a fluke year, but then again if he doesn’t do it this year, Lewis likely will fill in that gap and have a better yr next yr. If Nelson or Van Gundy can figure out a PG strength, they will be underrated at the 4 I have them at…..Howard’s a stat beast, I predict next year he turns that into a top 5-6 player beast with his all around game.

5) 76ers. Philly adds Brand to the mix of Iggy-Miller-Dalembert. They are motivated to do well, young, and have several guys to get pts if they need to, and an almost Chandleresque C to clean up the glass…..we’ll see.

6) Bulls. Yes I said it, I predict Tyrus will come along, and our depth everywhere will be tough. We’re young, we’re gritty, we’re probably a bit away from upper tier, but we should be a playoff contending team. If we trade Hinrich for a solid C, or if Noah surprises, I have us low. All the Bulls have to do is play with a spriit or pulse as a team and we’ll be good again.

7) Wizards. I know Arenas is hurt, but he’ll be back, I presume. I know they are soft, but Butler is underrated (presuming this year he plays 75+ games), Jamison is solid, and they seemed to care a bit more on D than in year’s past. If they get Arenas back to his former self, they’ll be the same team they were in 2006-2007 and 2005-2006….good enough to threaten any team when they’re hot, but not good enough to make a finals run.

8) Cavs. They get here on the strength of Lebron, who is the best player in the league. I would have them higher, as I do think Mo Williams ain’t a bad pickup, if they weren’t so damned light in the frontcourt. They have 3 players folks: Big Z, Varejao, and the sourpus. Big Z’s been healthy for 2-3 years now, but is like 7 4 and has a bad history of leg injuries (two combos that don’t go well) and he’s going to be 33. They’ll need him to play 35 MPG at least, because of the lack of depth,a nd that’s a lot to ask. Then they’ve got the sourpus, who can’t score at all as we know, demands minutes, can’t jump like he used to, and is unfortunately 1 of the 3 qualified biggies they got…..Finally they got Varejao, a guy who likely should take the Sourpus’s starting spot, but won’t, and a guy who while not anything as good as Ben Wallace was at his peak, is almost as bad offensively as Wallace. I don’t think they can play Ben and Andy together at all. Cleveland fans say they can play James at PF….whcih might prove true given his body, but I think that will really be a detriment to the rest of their team….and what’s worse with Mo in tow, they will be worse defensively at the guard spots, adn with a thin frontcourt, they won’t be as solid this year as last yr. Though perhaps post Wally World next year they could actually get a solid player and be a true title threat.

Just out:
9) Heat—Marion and the revamped Wade will be tough. Beasley will find a nice home here playing with D. Wade….they could trade Marion at the deadline and be pretty decently built for the future by next year, but right now they really only have 4 capable players (Haslem being the 4th) and really 3 of them play the same position. 2 all leaguers, 1 upcoming star potentially, and 1 solid role player….a playoff team in the past few years out East perhaps, but with the movements etc this offseason I don’t think so.

10) Hawks—Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Marvin Williams and Mike Bibby, these guys should be better, except that I always thought and still do think that Bibby’s overrated…..still they have good young players that need to be more consistent. Maybe Marvin Williams can put something together this year, if he does they’ll surprise. A lot of high draft picks on here, but I don’t know if they’ll be better than a 36-40 win team.

11) Bobcats—Larry Brown and this crew could surprise…..Okafor is a better player than he’s shown, I just know he is. They haven’t been too smart on the GM side, having 2 similarly skilled athletic wing players in Wallace and Richardson, was like the Cavs having Hughes and James except that James is in a different stratosphere than anyone else and Wallace and Richardson are about equally skilled as psuedo near all stars if everything happens correctly…..They are weak at the PG and C spots (if Okafor’s a PF again that is)….and too young for Brown. I don’t know what to think. Talent ain’t bad, but there are holes, and I don’t think they’ll cover them up. Okafor needs to step up in a big way.

12) Knicks. God I am so glad Duhon is gone, but he might not be awful for this team. They are still mismatched. I think Crawford will erupt a bit this year though under D’Antoni’s system….but Duhon, while decent in stretches won’t help them for major minutes, and it seems Starbury’s a distraction that they should have disappear. Randolph and Curry, while 2 decently talented bigs can’t play together, and I don’t know if Lee’s hustle and gritt will mean as much in a D’Antoni based system that wants to feature pure athleticism that I don’t know if he has…..it’s year 1 though and I think they’ll show a bit of progress by just not being a laughing stock.

13) Bucks. I actually hope I’m wrong, but it seems Skiles wants to give big minutes to his guys: Allen and Griffin, and that’s not too good. Bogut’s overrated with his bad contract, Redd might be in Skiles’s Gordog house earlier. Richard Jefferson though will be the solid Luol Deng of the team, but I don’t think this team can revamp quickly under Scott.

14) Pacers. Folks want to like this team because they rid themselves of O’Neal, which was smart, they needed to move on. They surprised last year with Dunleavy actually looking like a solid SG/SF and almost worth his money for a while…but they are so soft. TJ Ford, is lightening quick, could make them somewhat exciting at times, but he can’t play defense, nor can dunleavy, nor can Murphy, and Murphy’s role needs to increase, which won’t be good. He’s a better on paper guy than he is a player. They will struggle.

15) Nets. Hopefully this will end all of the Devin Harris is really quite fabulous banter that oddly seems to follow him everywhere despite the fact that he was like a #4 pick, makes gobs of money, and has never lived up to his hype…..Vince Carter went from everybody’s top 5 favorite player 2 years ago to now a big piece of crap, which isn’t correct, he’s still probably a 40’s-50’s player and at his best was probably no higher than top 20’s, but he’s still solid….they just don’t have much around them. I dont’ think they can do what the 76ers did last year. I think they are definite cave dwellers in the East.

Judging from the results of that poll, homerism is apparently a contagious disease.
