Whats the missing piece?
Today I was just taking a look at the Bulls roster and I thought it was pretty dang good. But obviously it isn't. After a less than mediocre performence last year, there must be a missing piece. It's almost exactly the same team plus Rose and Elton Brown. So I ask you, whats the missing piece? There's obviously something missing. A star player? Will Rose fill that gap? Did they just have a bad season? Well, what are your thoughts?

Groundhog Day
How about a dominant low-post presence? How about a bona fide superstar? How about a vocal leader?

post player
thats all i have to say
we’ve been missing the same thing for a few years now
i was one of the people who wouldve drafted beasley over rose
i really think the bulls got caught up the rose hype and the whole hometown hero homecoming crap
i really think beasley wouldve been a great fit for our team even if the kid is a little immature but hey who isnt these days at that age?
and i really see beasley becoming a star player much more likely than rose will on our team.
beasley has the personality

Lat's hope the Bulls can develop Gray into a presence in the post.
It would be big. Bt what about Drew Gooden? He played well in his time here.

When Pax was
on CTL a few weeks ago he talked about Gooden and how hard he worked this summer and that he is in great shape. Gooden worked with a trainer in Canada this summer.

Considering he's an expiring contract looking for a home next summer
Gooden will probably play better this season than he has the past few years (even though he’s always been a solid PF for Cleveland).

So how do you feel about Beasley now that the rook was ALREADY fined $50K...
…for his involvement in the weed-and-women bust at the rookie orientation? I mean, the damn season hasn’t started yet and he’s been in big trouble yet you’re still on the “I wanted Beasley” horse?

Defensive big man
I think folks drastically underestimate how much guys like AD and PJ Brown helped us over the years. Gooden doesn’t really fit into that category because he’s not a really savvy defender. Michael Ruffin, if he sticks still just sucks ass.

Meh
Good defensive bigs seem to come along as slowly as fine wine. I’d sooner say it’ll be Noah in two years.
In the short run, I’d be pretty happy to see Marcus Camby or Tony Battie here. Failing that, Brad Miller or Chris Kamen (neither of whom are great defensively, but do seem ok by virtue of bigness) would be nice.
For the right guy, we do have a plethora of fairly decent players we could offer (Gooden, Nocioni, Hinrich, Gordon under the right circumstances).

Camby and Kaman
Camby is a borderline perennial All-Star and one of the best defensive bigs in the league—he’s basically Tyson Chandler plus about 10 years.
That being said, I think Chris Kaman is actually one of the few traditional 5’s, sort of a throw-back to, say, the 80’s. He has that rarest of gifts—a developed low post offense. The Bulls would be lucky to land him.
But Camby and Kaman are head and shoulders above the other guys you mention—Battie is still a second tier guy at best, and Miller’s too old and too much of a jumpshooter.

Ah, yes. Defense...
I believe Noah is well on his way to becoming a very good defensive big, as he’s in the mold of a Tyson Chandler / Marcus Camby.
He is still young and still has a ways to go, of course. The Michael Beasley summer league game still really bothers me.

I agree with all of what you've written here Bullhockey
My thinking is simply that a solid defensive big would not only help us a lot in the short run, but also give Noah a model on how to develop his skills.
Basically if we consider Noah a “replacement Chandler” I’d really love the Bulls to find a “replacement Antonio Davis”.
From that perspective, even a second-tier guy like Battie would still be pretty helpful.
Something like Gooden/Nocioni for Battie/Cook/filler would look like a really good trade to me.

We need a center, offensive or defensive, whatever
The Bulls need a center. Be it a defensive force or a offensive one. Noah has some potential but right now he is not good enough to be a starter and Gooden to soft for the middle. If he is tought on D Deng, Rose and Gordon can score. If he is better on offensive. Let’s just score a lot. I Rose becomes good fast, trade Hinrich and let’s do this.

high percentage scorer
i guess that means low post?

A low post pick and roll game
if we can’t develop it with TT, Gooden, Noah and Rose.

dominant scorer
who averages 25+ ppg. we have been missing that guy since 1998, hope deng can be that guy.
when are we going to add a 7th championship?

Deng was great at the end of 06-07
But last year he wasn’t showing any signs of the guy he was at the end of that season.

Superstar
We will be nothing until we get or someone steps up as a superstar. We can scream for a big man all day but we all know what Jordon did with just decent ones. Not comparing anyone we have as Jordon but a superstar can make a huge difference.

Who's Jordon ?
Is it Gordon with the J Theory ? Or would that be the best Bull ever, whose name any basketball fan wouldn’t misspell twice in one post ?

Missing piece for what?
To be a champion? How about some damn outrageous talent? And time.
To be as good as 2006/2007? Not much. It might be that they over-achieved that year to 49 wins, but it’s also likely they under-achieved last year. I think they’re a .500 team for sure, depending on the guard rotation and the improvements of Thomas and Noah.

i agree what is missing is time and consistency
we have a solid team and when hughes is traded this year or worst case next year we will have our chance. now where the bulls went wrong is not drafting tyrus. tyrus is a good player the problem is that they have not been playing him and using him to his potential. if rose is going to be what alot of people think he is lets say d williams from utah he has boozer to put in about 20 on his own every game we have to also look at cp3 in new orleans he has west and chandler who are a good compliment to him.
i just hope this season will be a year where we play our young group and let them develop. i think hinrich, thabo, deng, tyrus and noah should start. lets see what it looks like. d rose should be the first off the bench. if we can play them and let these guys grow into their roles i know this can be a good year. i still rememver starting 0-9 and then ending playing the best year. we have to bench or cut loose hughes, and say bye bye to gordon next year.

Dominant scorer?
I don’t think we need one of those necessarily…the Detroit Pistons have been successful without one of those…that said, Hamilton, Billups, Sheed, and Prince can be big scorers at times and that’s 4 players averaging 14+ ppg…however, I think it certainly can be done without…clearly for a team to win like that, there needs to be scoring available at nearly every position, there needs to be alot of balance…all of the Bulls scoring is stuck at the SF, SG, or PG…we need to spread our scorers out to other positions so we can take advantage of mismatches…if Thomas or Noah develops nicely, we might (possible, maybe, probably not) be able to do so with this roster…getting some low post scoring is a priority..
Of the teams that have won since the Bulls domination…all have had a solid post scorer…true Tim Duncan and KG are superstars, but the pistons had Sheed and even McDyess helping out…can’t allow shooters to take advantage w/o post scoring

I think we need
Tyrus to develop, and the Bulls to run and gun in the Suns style….
Hinrich, Deng, Gordon, Hughes, Tyrus, Thabo, Noah, Rose are all speedy players and all but Tyrus have rather decent ball handling skills…
Run run run run run Bulls….then when games get tight, switch things up by playing more Gooden, Nocioni, alongside Rose, Deng, and Tyrus (for hopefully the D).
Our main thing though is we need to see Tyrus blossom out of his ooh wow moments into an ooh wow player on a consistent basis. If that happens, and there’s hope, fading hope but hope nonetheless (especially after all these reports) the Bulls will be much better than expected.
I think Noah will be close to PJ/Davis production this year, except that he can do some ball handling and is taller….
