Good things to say, and accurate in my estimation. He throws in a comparison to Dwyane Wade for good measure. I'm still giddy from last night. (There are notes on Oden in there too, but who cares?)

I like how Thorpe talked about

Rose being able to finish with his left hand, after being bumped. Luke Ridnouer was never one for defense, but wow, the rook really made him look bad on that one.

Was going to post this. Good stuff.

Rose's performance and the opener in general have been

analysed ad naseum in the previous thread. I agree with Matt’s conclusions and those of several other posters, so I won’t rehash the entire game. However, I wanted to add four observations that I made last night at the UC:

(1) Either Rose is doing the most committed, devoted Michael Jordan impersonation ever, or he really is just that intrinsically competitive. At the very end of the game, when the result was certain, he was nonetheless visibly displeased with his failure to make the little half hook jumper in the lane. When he was on the bench, he watched the game intently, cheering with genuine zeal and yelling information to his teammates on the floor. I honestly believe that victory is the kid’s only priority;

(2) Rose seems like a natural leader, even at his precocious young age. There were several instances where he called teammates over after plays and either encouraged them or gave them miniature tutorials on how he wanted plays to be run. I was surprised (and encouraged) by how much respect the veterans already seem to have for him;

(3) I am slightly concered about Rose’s health and durability, not because I think he is frail or injury prone, but because he takes a tremendous amount of punishment when he gets fouled on drives. I was seated close to the floor and I cringed when Ridnour hammered him across the head. He absorbed a massive blow on another drive as well. In the last preseason game, he mildly injured his hip when he batted out of the air on a drive to the rim. He generates so much momentuim with his speed and explosive leaping that the fouls in the lane are transformed into major collisions. Then again, Allen Iverson gets knocked around like a rag doll, but it hasn’t affected his longevity or productivity;

(4) When Rose trotted through the smoke and the public address announcer said ’FROM CHICAGO…", I got goosebumps.

A couple points on your points

I agree that Rose is a natural leader. One of my biggest pet peeves is that though the Bulls may have been friendly on the lockerroom, they acted like strangers on the court. No talking during games at all. Besides Noce that is. Sometimes I use to wonder if Kirk actually knew Luol, because you wouldn’t know it by the way they communicated. Rose communicates, which makes it a habit for other people as well.

I also like how when Rose was fouled semi-hard by Ridnour, the Bulls players were quick to rush over. Last year, it didn’t seem like they had each other’s back at times. This year, that seems to be the case. It reminds me of when Curry nut-punched Haywood. Bad move, no doubt. But good omen for things to come that season.

And yeah, I think Rose has a little D Wade in him. But I think if he develops that jumper, he won’t get hit so much, and can pick and choose his spots. And unlike Wade who seems to live to fall chest first to the floor, Rose appears not to be interested in kissing the floor on every drive.

by DangerMouse on Oct 29, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah. The jumper is key.

I thought multiple times last game, “If Rose develops a 3-point shot . . .” They were sagging off of him big time. He had at least four wide open looks at a 3 point shot, either in the secondary break or off of a pass in the half court. If he develops that shot, he could be Baron Davis + Wade (although hopefully much healthier). I think it’s incredibly possible, too. Rose has good mechanics and wrist action, he just gets inconsistent with release point and balance. He’s demonstrated that he has touch (around the basket), so the off-balance shouldn’t be much of an obstacle. He just needs a more consistent release. Same with his free throws. Practice practice practice.

Holy freaking crap - Thorpe took my question about Tyrus's inability to finish around the basket!

From today’s chat. I posted this as “Chuck”, a nickname, because I didn’t really want my real name floating around the WWL. That, and I really only cared to have the answer…which I got:

Chuck (Chicago, IL): Thorpedo: Tyrus Thomas is a much-improved player, but his biggest point for development right now appears to be finishing on non-dunks around the rim. What type of drills can you do to improve that facet of your game? Thanks!

David Thorpe: He shoots to many short shots with his palms up, almost finger rolling it, instead of fingers up and palms to the rim. I’m sure he will work on it, but he’s never been a great scorer. Remember, he’s younger than Al Horford.

I submitted the same question.

I’m glad he answered one of us. Although he didn’t say what drills you do; he makes it sound like a technique issue, but I think it might be a coordination/talent issue. If Tyrus takes those shots overhanded, he’s going to be slamming them off the rim and backboard. He needs to learn “touch.”

Some data

from 82games.com, although I feel like there’s more specific info about this somewhere else, but I’m too busy at work to look:

Year……..FG% on ‘Close’ shots
07-08…………… .338
06-07…………… .333

If you look up most forwards, they’re at least at 50%. So since 40% of his field goal attempts last year were ‘Close’, an improvement to .500 on these shots would raise his overall FG% by a whopping ~6.4%.

Before looking those numbers up, I couldn’t have imagined how significant that would be. Tyrus has developed into a good, maybe very good player, and more improvement is on the way, but if he keeps shooting 35% on ‘Close’ shots his upside is going to be greatly limited.

I’m almost afraid to comment, Mista Blogabull warns me about everything. Did I really just get another one for saying “Where’s matt at now?”

by Los on Oct 29, 2008 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

there's no need to be afraid

I’m assuming you stopped being a moronic jerk very recently. Maybe a quick daytime seminar or something.

The good news is, at Blogabull,

you can always reincarnate as a non-jerk. There’s a definite progression to non-jerkhood. If only the universe actually functioned that way, life would be much more civil!

So since I disagree with him, I’m a jerk?

  • I guess thats my answer. We were having a regular ass argument about Kirk’s value, and he was pulling for BG to be starting.
  • I say, ’Where’s Matt Now?’ after Kirk does well and BG looks horrible/struggles for half of the game.. And I get warned?

Thats some Scott Skiles type bitter bullshitt.. Get off ya high horse.

by Los on Oct 30, 2008 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I can just feel the warning coming now.

by Los on Oct 30, 2008 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

it's called "trolling"

don’t go around looking for or trying to start semi-arguments just for the sake of it.

Obviously you really like Kirk or his game, that’s fine. But when he does well, there’s no need to start calling people out or to try and start things with the Gordon fans here. Stuff like “where’s Matt now?”…it’s uncalled for.

by NormVanBeer on Oct 30, 2008 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand you ride for Matt til the death, no matter how ridiculous the argument is- basketball or not basketball related. Cousins? Or just best internet friends?

Look, if he’s willing to get into an extensive debate about it before the season even started, he should be willing to continue it when we actually have a game to talk about. It wasn’t ‘Trolling’, or me just pickin random people to argue with, it was me continuing what was started.

PS. the netflix ad is covering the whole post. thats now YOUR 2nd warning Matt. LMAO. ya’ll take yourselves too seriously

by Los on Oct 30, 2008 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

you're pretty useless here

I think all of us here have had disagreements with Matt at some point in time, so it has nothing to do with riding for someone.

But anyway I’ve had enough of wasting time with you. Go argue with someone who cares.

by NormVanBeer on Oct 30, 2008 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

correct

if Los wasn’t also useless, I’d be fine with him as a jerk.

Good lord,

I have no idea what your argument with Matt was. Neither do I care. Neither do I think you’re a jerk because you disagree – with anyone.

We’ve had a lot of rude folks over the years. Many were “banned” which really isn’t “banning”; they just come back with different screen names. The good news is, people tend not to be as rude with their new screen names. It’s like an internet version of reincarnation, with the end point being a modicum of politeness.

Note that there’s a ton of disagreement on this site. It’s what makes it interesting. It’s the calling out of specific individuals that gets tiresome.

And finally: my comment was in regard to the subject of banning, not you.

On thing I saw that concerned me

Rose’s tendacy to land on his “bad” knee. I kno its not major, but Im watchin that knee all season
