Trade of the Day (Bulls/Bobcats)
The Bobcats are screwed in the front office and the front court. They've got big money allocated to redundant players (Wallace and Richardson), no power forward, and two pseudo pointguards - both of whom happen to be bad. Augustin has been physically outclassed during the preseason and will continue to be during the regular season; they view Felton as a combo guard, otherwise they wouldn't have drafted Augustin. Confused? So are they.
The upshot is, we're here to help. We still love you, MJ, so we'd like to send you not only a point guard with the grittiness Larry Brown loves, but a real-life power forward and a shiny new draft pick, too.
How about this trade? (That's Kirk, Gooden, Gray, and a #1 for Richardson and Nazr Mohammed for those who don't want to follow the link.)
Why it helps Charlotte from a basketball point of view
First of all, they need a power forward, and an Okafor/Gooden pairing could actually be one of the better combos in the east. Emeka's strength is defending the basket and scoring a little from the post; Gooden is a good rebounder and jump-shooter.
Secondly, it improves them at the point. They've shown in numerous ways that they don't view Felton as the answer, and I don't blame them. Augustin is going to be better served as a mighty-mouse type off the bench, somewhere between Eddie House and Ben Gordon on that spectrum. A Hinrich and Felton backcourt wouldn't be bad because Hinrich could guard twos (as he's shown), and it would allow them to slide Felton into the slot they want him to play, anyway. Hinrich is also a Larry Brown type player. He's a grind-it-out-and-play-tough-D point, not a sprint-downcourt-with-your-hair-on-fire point. In a word, he fits.
Why it helps Charlotte from a front office of view
Money. Filthy lucre. The Bobcats not only have poor attendance and TV revenue, they've allocated their cap space terribly. They're paying Nazr Mohammed six million a year to impersonate Emeka Okafor for ten minutes a game. They're paying Richardson 12 million over the next three years to be the run-the-floor 2 they don't want, but already have (in Wallace). This would give them a boatload of expiring deals next year (Gooden, Felton, Morrison, May) to pursue free agents, and a potential lottery pick.
It's time to start over for the Bobcats. They've paid big money to players who are never going to win. Picks and capspace are the way to go because occasionally those draft picks do work out beautifully.
I'll now wipe the shit-eating grin from my face.
Why it helps the Bulls from a basketball point of view
Richardson fits us for the same reasons he doesn't fit the Bobcats. He is so good when he's running the floor, as he did in Golden State. He also would give us something we don't have: some post scoring. To the best of my knowledge there's no rule that states a big man has to be your on-the-block scorer. Lastly, he shoots a respectable 41% from 3, so he'll be able to take advantage of those wide-open looks that Rose gets him.
In other words, he might be the M2GWCSAD.
In terms of the interior, Nazr could really help. We're light inside, and so bigger, stronger dudes just kill us. Noah can't handle them. Nazr could. He also brings a little nastiness to the floor, which I think we need. No team is complete without a war daddy.
Why it helps the Bulls financially
It doesn't, and it means we've seen the last of Gordon, which may be a mistake. My point is this: the Bulls should go for it. Not in 2010, now. Get the best players you can, give Rose the ball, and run. It's expensive, yes, but only a little more so than what Hinrich was giving you to essentially back up Rose. And six million a year isn't too bad for a backup of Nazr's quality.
* * *
Of course, there are numerous caveats. Richardson needs to understand that he's the second wheel to Rose, the Bobcats might be loathe to acquire a point guard after they just drafted one. And I want to see how Rose and Gordon play together before they move anybody.
The point remains, though, that the Bulls are going to have to make a move at some point, and it better be with this season, not 2010, in mind. A guard rotation of Rose, Richardson and Gordon would be dynamic, balanced, and definitely the league's most exciting. A center position with Noah and Nazr would provide 48 minutes of defense and rebounding. And by moving Gooden, we're giving the pf position to Tyrus, who's been looking great, and the backup pf minutes to Nocioni, who's meshed with Rose better than any other Bull.
It's an imperfect trade. But it would get us into the playoffs, and more importantly, the Bulls would be fun as hell to watch.

There are two things i'm not sure about with this trade:
1. Charlotte just drafted their second PG in the lottery in the last four years. Trading for Hinrich would be really damning to their ability to evaluate talent (as if it wasn’t already). But to draft a guy in June and basically give up on him before he even plays a regular season game is questionable even by Bobcats standards.
2. Jason Richardson’s contract. While I like Richardson and agree that he’s exactly the type of player we need to pair with Rose, i’m not sure it’s the best idea to tie up the organization financially for a guy that probably won’t put you over the top, right before there’s about to be an incredible free agent class.
But it’s definately interesting to think about and I wonder if Charlotte would go for that. Short term, it’s probably a perfect trade for us in regard to clearing roster spots and getting solid talent back. Although we’d probably be kicking ourselves a couple years from now if someone like Chris Bosh decides he doesn’t like it in Canada anymore.
That's totally valid
it would ruin any chance at Bosh, which is the player I’d LOVE the Bulls to target. (LeBron ain’t gonna happen). We might have to take Felton off their hands. I wouldn’t necessarily mind that, however – it’s just a year.
It’s a difficult PR move, too, as you state. (That’s one of the caveats I mentioned.) From their point of view, however, if Augustin is producing off hte bench in a Gordon-ish way, it’s really no big deal.

Biggest issue for me is Richardson's age
He turns 28 in a few months, and while that isn’t old, it means he’ll be exiting his prime as Rose settles in to the NBA game 2-3 years from now. And when Richardson hits 30-31 his slowdown will force him to play sf where we already have Deng. I think it’s a very solid short term solution, but questionable long term solution.
28-31 years old during his contract
which means he’ll still in his prime at the end of it, or just starting to decline. And we’re the youngest team in the league as it is. Some veteran presence is needed, IMO.

Anyone that's older than 25 is too old for Rose's prime.
And as I’ve repeatedly said, you’re not getting someone of “proven” caliber at SG that’s <= 25. If the Bulls can approach > 50 wins, on average, over Rose’s first three years, I think that’s far more important than saving space for 2010. I understand that’s my opinion, but I think it’s relevant.
In your link you also threw Sefolosha in the trade.
You don’t mention that in your trade summary in parenthesis.

You say “a guard rotation of Rose, Richardson and Gordon would be dynamic, balanced, and definitely the league’s most exciting.” But you acknowledge that this would hurt us financially and thus mean we have “seen the last of Gordon.”
So are you suggesting we make this trade in order to be competitive this year alone?
Good points both:
Thabo was a mistake – just a bad link. The Gordon issue is more difficult. It might be a one year wonder type thing, having the three of them. The gamble would be in assuming that the Rose/Richardson backcourt of 2009 is better than the Rose/Gordon backcourt of 2009. And that may be totally wrong.
There’s a lot of other issues as well. We don’t know how good Rose/Gordon are together, because we haven’t seen them. If they just kill together, this trade isn’t useful: we’ve got our homegrown guard of the future already. But if they don’t kill – or if Ben is going ot leave us regardless – it’s pretty attractive.
Upshot is, it would give us one year of awesomeness, and 2 more years that are not quite as awesome, but still pretty good. Unless, of course, we can move the contract of Larry Hughes.
Which is not likely.

Luckily, Charlotte won't make this trade until they're convinced Augustin isn't ready.
That of course, will give the Bulls time to evaluate Gordon—assuming he plays this year.
If we are going to lose Gordon in this trade
I would like to see if another trade could be made to move Gordon to Charlotte also. With Richardson gone they would need a SG.
AND a first rounder? We’re giving up wayyy too much for something that doesnt even really help the cap situation, and not only hinders the BG situation- its going to have us lookin for Bird Eye Ty’s Money in the future…
Maybe Larry Hughes and a first rounder for JRich
This year's draft blows,
and we’re too young as it is. In 2010 Larry Hughes money = Tyrus Thomas’ money. Assuming he warrants it.

i like the premise here.
nazr is more of a 5 than gooden, and richardson is more of a 2 than hinrich. assuming that rose, tyrus and deng are the 3 players the bulls are the most confident in moving forward, it makes sense to put some true positional players around them. with richardson/gordon at the 2 and nazr/noah at the 5, you’ve got solid play at both positions. add in noc and sefolosha and, well, i guess, hughes and you’ve got some nice depth, too.
Cashing checks and having sex.
I'm not seeing it
I’d like to get JRich, but I haven’t heard anything that suggests he’s the guy they’re complaining about.
And I don’t see him and Wallace as identical players. JRich is a really good shooter on top of everything else. Which is why he’d be kick ass next to Rose.
Wallace seems to be the guy they’re shopping, and unlike JRich, he is definitely not a good shooter. While he’s got a lot of good skills, he’d be a really bad fit with Deng and Rose anchoring our lineup.
So yeah, they’d probably really like Kirk, but I doubt they want to give JRich and I don’t see where Wallace gets us. And Nazr isn’t the sort of player I want to take on 2010 salary for. The benefits just don’t outweigh the drawbacks.
BigWay
Lots of issues with this deal.
First the pros, J Rich is basically a better combination of Gordon and Hughes, so he would be an excellent addition to our starting lineup. He all but ensures the departure of Gordon, because of his $12 million per through 2011, we can’t afford Gordon after this contract, unless he comes to his senses and accepts a Nocioni size contract, which he has already turned down twice.
The Bulls don’t need Mohamed, he is an old version of Noah, whose game is based on hustle, and he doesn’t alwyas hustle. No way I’m paying this guy for three more years at $6million per. Instead of Mohamed, we should take back Adam Morrison, expiring contract, this is why Charlotte signed him, just to make trades balance. In this deal no need to include Gray, who I like as a backup.
Given last years lottery, remember 1.7% and that we are not guarenteed to be out of the Lottery this year, I’m not giving up future unprotected #1 picks, period
Now the realilty, Okafor, Richardson and Wallace are the Bobcats best players, so I don’t see them looking to get rid of any one of them. Second, Okafor is best suited to the 4, the Cats don’t really want him to play the 5. Third, I don’t think that the Cats are giving up on Augustin in his rookie season.
So Hinrich and Gooden for Richardson and Morrison or even Wallace and Morrison I would do in a heartbeat, but the deal doesn’t make much if any sense for Charlotte. If it made sense for Charlotte we could substitue Nocioni for Gooden, but I doubt that Charlotte wants 5 more years of Nocioni’s contract either.
Richardson is someone they probably would never give up
He’s a tireless worker, class act, basically everything Larry Brown wants in a player. The only player I see on the Bobcats we could pry away is Sean May, who is going the route of Sweetney/Curry and eating his way out of the league.
"I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Gonna kick some ass in the USA. Gonna climb a mountain, gonna sew a flag, gonna fly on an eagle. I’m gonna kick some butt, gonna drive a big truck. I’m gonna rule this world. I’m gonna kick some ass. I’m gonna rise up, gonna kick a little ass. Rock, flag, and eagle!"
Not a bad trade
It also would make the bobcats one hell of a defensive team (hinrich, wallace, Okafur) maybe we can hand them thabo, but i guess that helps them out alot more than it does the bulls.
On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....
