Preseason Open Game Thread #8: Bulls vs. Milwaukee Bucks
Final preseason game (7:30, CSN), and a weird one at that: against the same team they'll open the season against on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Bucks.
Will that scheduling quirk make a difference in the lineup? I don't see the need in 'hiding' anything for the regular season...the NBA's a place with few secrets: if you're better that night you'll win, whether the opponent knows it's coming or not.
I'm sick of trying to figure out who's going to be playing. I'm guessing anyone who's a maybe won't play.

This should be fun.
Out tonight are:
Gordon – Toe
Deng – Toe (no kidding)
Hughes – who cares
Tyrus will be playing through an ankle problem though. I am expecting a big game out of him. And with Noc getting more minutes this will be his chance to show he can work in Rose’s offense and minimize his deficiencies. Thabo will be getting more time by default too.

At the time of your first post
he had made one basket in 12 minutes. Like I said. So you were misrepresenting him. And the Bucks suck. They suck against everyone. It is nice we are winning, but the Bucks sucking is a big factor. If we were playing a good team we’d have to play better. We actually had a bad second quarter. So yeah, I am watching the game.

Agreed. The Bucks have quite possibly the worst defensive unit put together
in the history of the NBA. That’s not an exaggeration. They have sieves at every position. Ridnour, Redd, Jefferson, etc. They are a truly terrible defensive team.
by fundamentallysound on Oct 24, 2008 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Don't tell me I'm the one misrepresenting
when your response is “He made one basket” as if that’s all there is to the game of basketball! Not to mention a comparison to Simmons!
To my mind, your philosophy is a misrepresentation if you don’t consider the whole game.
I will agree that the Bucks aren’t blessed with much (or any?) defensive talent, but that only makes my point. Bogut, Jefferson, and Redd score baskets, ergo they should dominate the Bulls, right? And maybe they will opening night, but it’s never that simple.
I know it’s the nature of this blog to slam certain of the team’s players, fine. But after 3 months of anguish over BEN GORDON, and how it’ll be the end of the world if this or that happens or doesn’t happen, I’m fed up.
I’m a fan of THE BULLS, not solely Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, or Thabo Sefolosha! And the notion that any of these players is an irreplaceable basketball god, while the others are nuthin’ but dog meat galls to no end. I refuse to believe even the least of them has nothing to offer. This is a deep roster, with plenty of inter-competition, necessarily. But the pitting of players against each other here goes too far (for me, I don’t doubt some love it) when it devolves into simplistic denigration. The season is about to begin, and it’s time to pull together and play as a team. While all that matters is that it’s done on the court, can’t we also do a better job here on this great blog?
So I’m puttin’ everybody on notice. No more Mr. Nice Guy. There’s a new Sheriff in town, and I’m prepared to blast your ass if necessary! Constructive criticism is acceptable, ignorance is not!

So he didn't have a particularly good shooting night.
But why focus only on that? He also had 10 (!) assists and 7 rebs. Almost a triple double. 6/6 FT’s 18 PTS.
Your (The Thabo-haters) tendencies to ONLY bring out the negative is pretty annoying and misleading.

I don’t hate him, but I watch the same game and wasn’t impressed. The whole game was a sloppy mess, Thabo included. I find it hilarious that no one cares what his shooting percentage (against a bad team) was or how he actually looked out there with his crazy shots and turnovers. The game was very ugly. It was against the Bucks, people. I am not impressed.

Comparing just their ages. That's what's silly.
Thabo 2304 mins + 99 playoff mins 2 403
BG 9479 mins + 793 playoff mins = 10 072
Meaning BG has played more than 4 times as many NBA minutes and thus has had way more time to develop.
And you’re putting words into my post when you say I foresee a great future with Thabo. I’ve said I want to try it.
BG is best a s a sixth man, anyway.
Oh, and that ONE game that BG played this pre-season and scored a little – He was playing PG… That’s not what his role with this team is, should he stay so you can flat out disregard that.
Put that in your career and smoke it :P

I don't want to try it
because there’s little chance there will be some great leap in development, because of their ‘silly’ ages.

rotoworld...
Derrick Rose suffered a right hip flexor strain in the first quarter of the Bulls’ final exhibition game on Friday night against the Bucks and will not return.
He drew a foul from Bucks forward Richard Jefferson and landed awkwardly, spending several minutes on the court before rising. He then rode a stationary bike near the Bulls’ bench to try to keep the injured area loose. This is quite a disappointing way to end the preseason, as Rose had been as hot as anyone in the league. Let’s hope he’s ready to go for the opener on Tuesday. Oct. 24 – 9:23 pm et
Several minutes on the ground? Didn’t seem like it to me.

I forgot about the game
Why did Thabo, Gray, and Noce start instead of Hinrich, Noah, and Tyrus?
Why did Derrick and Tyrus only play like 5 mintes each?
How come Kirk and Noce played well?
How did Thabo get ten assists?
How many people were out? I’ve got Hughes, Gordon and Deng. Is there are anybody else?
Why did we have such a wierd game? I get that S***** and B***** were on the Bucks’ coaching staff, but wouldn’t that make us all play well?
How did Thabo play more than 48 minutes without overtime?
My head hurts…
by stupidgenius on Oct 24, 2008 10:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
As I note below
I passed out about 20 minutes into the game.
But I know that Tyrus was playing through an injury, which I presume is why he didn’t start. And per the box score, he had 4 fouls in like 5 minutes. (!!!!!)
So that’s probably why he didn’t play much. :(

Dunno on Hinrich
but it was Thabo’s last shot to start in a preseason game so that might have been it.
Rose got injured by Jefferson and was taken out. Probably won’t keep him out of the opening game though, but with the aggressive and sloppy playing happening tonight it wasn’t a good environment for Rose anyway so better he was out.
Tyrus was still dealing with a sore ankle and maybe didn’t get the start because he couldn’t fully practice or something. They seem big on that. Otherwise, he got into foul trouble (two stupid offensive fouls, one which wasn’t a foul) and they sat him out. He was playing injured anyway so no surprise they held him out.
Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Well,
unbelievably, VDN started Gray and Sefolosha! Somehow, the score was 42-22 Bulls at one point. Of course, this was solely due to the ultimate, superior suckage of Skiles’ troops, because we all acknowledge the considerable suckage Gray and Sefolosha pollute upon the court of basketball!
Then, there was a bitchin’-cool fight! Causing all our hearts to beat lustily. Whilst some of us wondered how long it’d be before our panties got dry, the majority of us squashed our beers upon each others foreheads in a crass display of 1980s Neanderthalism.
Eventually, the grand illusion of team play was revealed: a mirror trick. The mirror cracked, Kirk, Noc, and Thabo reverted back, and Skiles beaded his eyes. And He did indeed give forth the heartiest of claps of encouragement to his chosen minions.
But it was not meant to be for the evil ones on this day (evening, really). For every Aaron Gray or Demitrius Nichols (!) block the Skilesfolk would rebound and put back, our Anointed-By-Default-Warriors found that common psychic connection, which all humans share, and used it to repeatedly net the roundball successfully. This, of course, was something the inhumans could not match! Even so, all would have been lost had Joakim The Giant not discarded his protective spectacles to make a precious tip-in.
Yet, it mattered not, in the end. Skiles felt not the ignominy. These players won’t play much next week.

Rose being the last player announced in the starting lineup
Pardon me if I missed this – I passed out about 20 minutes into the game and just woke up (long week at work) – but has there been no discussion on here about Derrick Rose being the last player announced tonight? This was the first time this happened, correct?
“From CHICAGO…” That was awesome!
Was anyone out there as geeked up about this as I was?
(Pardon me if this was discussed…this is a long thread – please direct me to where it was discussed…thanks!).

i still dont understand why they say
“from chicago” just because he is from here… they announce everyone else by school, and i think it’s weird they don’t do it just cause he is the hometown guy.
by Jaina on Oct 25, 2008 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree
That was weird; besides, I think everyone knows that he’s from Chicago anyway. Typically for players that didn’t go to college they announce the high school, but they didn’t do that here. The only analogy is that for foreign players that didn’t play college the U.S., they’ll name the country (i.e. Nocioni – "Argentina").
IMO, they should just say “From Memphis”.

I hope they keep saying from Chicago.

They did
and he explained it’s because (I’m paraphrasing) that he has spent his whole life in chicago except for the one year in memphis, so he prefers ‘from chicago’. I can’t find the quote now, but I know I read it either this morning or yesterday. Crap – it’s outthere somewhere, though.

You suck!
ok, that was maybe a tad overboard :)
I’m generally like you, but in this case, being that he’s a hometown guy, the franchise, and really was only a one-and-done college player, it makes decent sense to me.
In the grand scheme of things, it probably makes more sense than the current tradition. While we’re changing things up, I’d like to hear Nocioni as being from Southwest Buenos Aires Polytechnic Middle school #27, or wherever he last went to school.

It's symbolic
Of course nobody really cares when players get announced, but you have to admit that there is a certain meaning behind it, and to some small extent the organization’s intentions can be inferred by the decision to single him out during introductions.
They’ve clearly been holding back with him – I think we all assumed the marketing campaign would center around Rose this year, and instead they have television commercials that don’t feature any of the players and a bunch of totally bullshit radio commercials with the Bulls playing against Satan and Zeus and the like.
And announcing Kirk after Rose throughout the preseason was again symbolic that they’d be holding back on Rose and continue pandering to Kirk.
But after Rose’s kickass preseason, this might be an indication that they really are willing to turn the keys over to him. Feel free to mock me for reading too much into this, but there is a patten here.

Already posted a fanshot but . . . .
This is for sure: If Rose is healthy, he’s starting.
“The guy’s a star,” said Skiles, not prone to hyperbole. “He’s beyond quick and fast, and he’s so powerful. He can go to the rim and finish. He has unique shots in the paint that he makes — floaters, runners. And that doesn’t even mention that he sees the floor and passes the ball. He’s going to be very hard to handle.”

Rose is indeed fine.(Sorry if already posted somewhere)
The strained hip flexor Derrick Rose suffered on Friday is not thought to be serious and he’s expected to start for the Bulls in Tuesday’s regular-season opener.
“(Rose) wanted to go back in,” Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro said. “But there’s no sense taking a risk there. He’ll be fine.” Great news for Rose owners everywhere. Oct. 25 – 12:10 am et

My thoughts on the game.
Rose looked very good before taking that nasty fall, if he can develop that consistent jumpshot it will be very hard for opponents to stop him eventually. Jefferson hit him unnecessarily on that lay-up, and I’m happy Noce gave him shit the whole game. Kirk had himself a nice game (perhaps saw the video Picco posted earlier?) and I was happy to see him get in Jefferson’s face for being a whiny bitch.
Tyrus looked solid as well, I’m not sure why he didn’t play at all in the 2nd half. Cedric Simmons probably earned himself a roster spot with some big plays and solid D, Nichols looked good as well.
The big question of the night is Thabo. I mean, I loved his hustle and how he picked up his D at the end of the game, but he was awful for most of the game. Aside from a few open 3s set up by nice penetration by Kirk/Rose, his shot was its usual weak self, and made plenty of bad decisions. Again, I’m glad he picked his game up when it mattered, but he’s a real question mark for this team and that worries me.

But didn’t think much of it because I figured there were more “hellos” that weren’t captured by the camera.
But thinking about it more, it was interesting. I certainly don’t think TT (for example) would be hugging Skiles at any point.

Ya, I saw dat.
Re: Thabo. You might try worrying less and enjoying more. Why is it so difficult to acknowledge he had a nice game? 6-6 ft 7 reb 10 ast 18 pts +8 Noc took the tough shots (only one I recall seemed truly ill-advised) and recovered from 6-18 to finish 9-22. Obviously, this wasn’t against the top competition, but c’mon. If you call Thabo awful on most of this one, where do you go to describe when he actually has a bad game?
by marionette on Oct 25, 2008 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm starting to wonder if
some of the “announcing” is (subliminally?) affecting bloggers impressions. I was struck by the number of times King and especially Funk were on Thabo critically. Like Red doin’ his “Nooo” with Tyrus last year. Okay, maybe not that extreme, and maybe at times deserved, but usually not.
I remember one time he was described as “out of control”, when what really happened was a fairly incredible dribble penetration to set up a Noc 3. Funk also opined that he got away with this or that a few times. Weird.
‘Course, the Red effect would’ve been a reactionary one. To excessive Aaron-love!

Odd comment from me, beware!
I played basketball at depaul today, been awhile since i played a nice serious game with my friends, as most of hte summer has had me playing with my cousins. Ive played more like a forward with my cousins cuz im a bit bigger than a few of them, and spent more time in the post rather than on the perimeter. Today however i played more like a pg, since most of my friends are bigger or stronger than me and i cant really match up well in the paint with anyone. It took a while but i eventually found a nice stride, setting up plays and taking jumpers without having to concern myself with the rebounds…i played like the hinrich i idolize…..
Then as soon as i was done, i check my phone and get messages telling me kirk killed, and i almost anticipated it….
i remember last year being like this, id have a crappy game and i would come home to find kirk had a crappy game.
Then there is the fact that today i ranted about hinrich not playing up to the level that i thought he should be at, and i entertained the idea of letting him go cuz he wont revert back to the hinrich i idolize. Ive done this a few times before and it seemed almost every time kirk would have a great next game. Does hinrich read blogabull??
Its a stupid fan thing, but i cant help wondering, do somehow my actions directly correlate to kirks performance on the court?
LIke i said, wierd comment frmo me, my apologies

"...have you seen Rose play?"
No, he hasn’t. Their games are nothing alike – Williams was never that quick, fast, explosive, or big, and he didn’t have the court vision either. Which is why I actually don’t mind when a Knick fan trolls. It just reminds me of a) Duhon running their point b) Gallinari, who’s yet to play, and has a bad back at age 21
Not good, NYK. And no quick turnaround on the horizon, either.

I know Eddy Curry is garbage. Though I recall Curry helping the Bulls to a playoff spot. I think none of you remember Jay Williams out of college. He was a better scorer, better passer, and much better three point shooter than Rose. Then he stunk his first year.

I remember him not being very good, even in pre-season.
He was better in college, but he looked lost too much in games and didn’t play that many minutes. Though he looked promising before the motorcycle accident/career death.
I don’t remember him too well, but from what I do remember, comparing him to Rose is really bad. Williams didn’t have the athleticism that Rose does, and either way the only reason that was such a mistake was because he drove a motorcycle into a pole.
I don’t think Rose is going to have quite that problem.
Gallinari had back spasms and is kind of tall. Let’s compare him to Johnathan Bender! Woo, injuries.
