Sam Smith on Bulls.com

[From the FanPosts. This is pretty neat-o...though I wonder how Sam's style may change writing FOR the team -ed.]

I think everyone's going to smile when they see this one, compliments of MyBulls:

The Chicago Bulls announced today that prominent and longtime Chicago sports journalist Sam Smith will be doing all his future writing and continuing his popular NBA column exclusively on the team's web site, Bulls.com.

In his new role, Smith will also provide in-depth coverage of every Bulls game along with a post-game analysis and report available on the site.

Additionally, Smith will write a daily blog about the activities in the NBA, participate in a question and answer mailbag with readers, and host live chat sessions with fans on Bulls.com.

FanPosts are user-created posts from the BlogABull community, and are to be treated as the opinions and views of that particular user, not that of the blogger or blog community as a whole.

My only question

is whether they [Reinsdorf, Paxson] will give Sam the freedom to write whatever he wants. I really hope that is the case, and I don’t think Sam would have taken the job if it weren’t.

Sweet, I can't wait to see how Sam chats when he's in a cranky mood

Welp

I shoulda read the whole thing:

“I would also like to point out that the Chicago Bulls will have no right of prior approval over the things Sam writes. He has been given complete independence by us, the same kind of independence he enjoyed while writing for the past 25 years at the Chicago Tribune.” – Steve Schanwald

C'mon, this was a guy willing to write off a book that he knew would piss off Jordan when he was still covering the Bulls beat

Plus, Sam’s got a strong enough following to find another job elsewhere if it came to it. I’d be shocked if he just becomes another organizational mouthpiece like KC

I'm not accusing him of becoming an organizational mouthpiece

just I wouldn’t expect him to be writing any hard hitting exposes of his employer either. There’s a pretty wide range of options between objective journalism and being a member of the PR team, and I’d expect Smith is inclined in the former direction. He’ll write plenty of interesting stuff about other things, I imagine, but his Bulls coverage will be suspect.

There’s a clear conflict of interest when you’re supposed to “objectively” covering your employer. Ignoring that, or pretending it doesn’t exist, is just rank silliness.

Doubt thats true...

but if it is when we get a bunch of trade scenarios involving tyrus (or Ben) by January

That's justice well served

I love Sam Smith. I know he often has nonsensical or at least wild trade ideas that he just makes up like we here all do on the blog sites without much real rumor knowledge….but I’ve alwasy found him knowlegeable on the game and even more a very entertaining read.

Anyone read

Sam’s last piece for Hoopshype? I gave it a skim today and it’s pretty out there. He talks about how athletes suffere depression and goes into Jon Amaechi (sp?) and …well that’s pretty much where I stopped reading but I’m glad to have him back writing about what he’s best at.

I enjoyed that column

One of the reasons I like Sam is that when he delves away from straight analysis or reporting, he’s not afraid to responsibly touch other subjects that affect the game or the players.

Lol, it was a good article…

.. But anyone find it particularly strange how the headline was worded? It made Delonte West look like he was ‘coming out’

First,

the organization will fall in love with him and make statements to the press about how excited they are to have him.

They will stay in love with him until long past the point that he is helping the team.

When others screw up around him, he’ll get together with other Bulls employees of his generation and vote to suspend.

And when they get rid of him, his value to his next employer will skyrocket, showing how bad of a decision it was to do get rid of him.

Oh, and when he stands next to Ben Gordon, he’ll be taller.

Sam Smith is now a Blogger?

I get a kick out of how quick these nimrods change their tune. This was just like Hub Arkush slamming sports radio when he was doing Bears broadcasts and then gets canned from the Bears and goes to sports radio.

He's been for awhile

but yea he also used to pick on blogs from time to time

No BG or Deng

for tonight. Deng has a back issue and also a small toe injury. Those darn toes!

by sue369 on Oct 24, 2008 6:43 PM CDT reply actions

No kidding

Maybe the team needs to invest in some super-cushioned slippers or something…

(Disclaimer – I do realize that players injure toes in ways besides walking into the furniture.)

i just hope they let him do his thing...

although, a watered down sam smith, is way better than no sam smith at all. i’ve sorely missed his nba analysis. and reading kc’s shite, just reminds me how great of a writer and how professional of a journalist sam smith is.
