Preseason Open Game Thread #6: Bulls at Dallas Mavericks

For the first time all preseason, the Bulls should have the full roster available tonight. As was discussed all Tuesday, it'll be interesting to see what VDN does with his starting guards. He can go one way and say since Gordon hasn't played much he isn't ready to start, or just start him to see how he plays with Rose like he's 'tinkered' with other guard combinations.

In their first preseason game against the Mavs, the Bulls looked porous defensively and outside of Rose and Gooden not very good on offense either. Noah should help the former, and Gordon the latter, but the size of the Mavs front line will likely give the Bulls trouble no matter what. What hopefuly won't happen again is another night of the Bulls 2-guards getting beat up by Antoine Wright.

No problem with his free throw shooting!

In a very small sample size, I think he’s over 90% this pre-season. With the frequency with which he gets to the line, that could save his overall offensive efficiency.

hmmm

KC says:

DALLAS - Guard Ben Gordon surprisingly is out for tonight’s tipoff against the Mavericks. Gordon participated in the morning shootaround at American Airlines Center. But coach Vinny Del Negro said with back-to-back games that includes a Wednesday game against the Timberwolves in Minnesota, it was his decision to sit Gordon.

“We want to make sure his toe injury is 100 percent,” Del Negro said.

Del Negro is starting Larry Hughes and Kirk Hinrich in the backcourt after Derrick Rose missed Monday’s practice to attend the funeral of his uncle. But Del Negro reiterated not to read anything into his lineups, even though just three preseason games exist.

On the dunk and the Diop score

Gooden was totally lost on defense. He wasn’t guarding his man, he wasn’t guarding the basket. Gooden needs to go to the bench. You can’t have an interior defender this bad getting heavy minutes

Gooden’s never been known as a great or even good defender, but I don’t recall him generally looking this bad. I’m wondering if the coaches have everyone’s heads completely spinning.

he was playing decent, tyrus was playing like a wild man and gooden, hinrich and hughes were having a contest to see who sucks hardest. The problem with Lu is he never seems to make the play at the big moment, or make a couple of plays in a row. His shot is off too.

by NormVanBeer on Oct 21, 2008 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

IIRC

The criticism had more to do with him not finishing as effectively when he goes left rather than right. He’s looked good today, but I’m going to trust Doug on this one until we see more of Rose; Doug presumably watched significantly more than 20 minutes of action in making his scouting assessment.

The other possibility is that Rose addressed this deficiency in the offseason.

Nostalgia

Because this game is crap, I went and checked the box score for that great Bulls / Denver game right after the Wallace trade. Hughes and Gooden didn’t play and the Bulls put up 135 against a terrible defensive team. BG had 37, TT had 18/11/4/2 steals / 3 blocks, etc. I understand having to play Ben Wallace because Pax was the idiot who signed that deal. But once they traded him and got Cleveland’s crap, would it have been that difficult to tell two players in whom you’ve invested nothing that you’re going to play the young kids?

Instead, we were immediately fed the line that Gooden is a starting 4 and that Hughes will get huge minutes. And now we have this debacle. I’m hopeful that I can find footage of the Denver game throughout this season as the Bulls muddle to 28 wins.

by Gene Banks on Oct 21, 2008 9:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

the true disappointment of last season, much more than losses even. it could happen again this year. vdn needs to figure it out.

There were a lot of questions

This offseason whether the 49-win season from 2 seasons ago, or last year’s 33-win season, more appropriately reflected the current state of the team. There should be no question that this is NOT anything resembling a 49-win team.

Effort's the main thing.

The 49 win team played their asses off and beat teams with defense and hustle plays. I know it’s just the preseason, but they’re not hustling or playing D.

An airball by any player resembling Larry Hughes will be attributed to Larry Hughes. Ridiculous shot selection also counts.

rose is going to be special. VDN really needs to let TT and rose play together more often. just imagine the speed on breaks

by studdeir on Oct 21, 2008 9:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Note

This would require TT actually RUNNING from one end of the floor to the other.

I’m really excited about what TT is going to do this year, but his two biggest areas for improvement now are: (1) finishing around the rim, and (2) HUSTLE your ass off from one end to the other. I’m not hugely optimistic that we’ll ever see (2), but I am optimistic that he’s going to be a good player and damn fun to watch.

the reason we are coming back in this game

besides Dirk being on the bench, is that the entire offense is now revolving around D Rose. No endless dribbling from Hinrich, no erractic off time jumpers from Hughes, no indecision by Deng, no excessive dribbling and flailing from Tyrus. The regulars on the bench need to learn what Noc has learned – give the damn ball to D Rose and get out of the way.

I think we’ve got some pretty damn good pieces right now: Gordon, Deng, Tyrus, and even Nocioni off the bench fit him well. Yeah, we need a low post scorer, preferably with some bulk. But it’s not like those players can’t play.

I think I said the name of the players that are crap

Actually, the more I see this team, the more I think that Pax made a mistake not giving BG what he wanted. Besides Rose, he’s our best player…

I’ll tell you one thing, I was one of the people that said that Noce had to be traded. But now, I think we need to keep, because he’s the only one that can shot 3 pointers besides BG…

Fuck Hinrich, Hughes and the other crap!!!
They should pay to play on the Bulls not the other way!

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

How many turnovers?

He had at least 4 stupid ones tonight. He had to have 6 for the game though.

right

but i just don’t understand why he won’t come out and say: “well, the one thing we do know is that Derrick is our starter, now we just have to figure out who else we go with…”

stop with the little Skiles-like mind-games and word tricks

it's the Johnny Jump Shot way

i’m sure Pax has tutored him well on the nefarious media

Derek Rose is FILTHY good

I’m so geeked right now it’s ridiculous. I don’t care if it’s the preseason and I don’t care if we were playing Dallas’ second stringers: Rose did whatever the hell he wanted. Wow. And to think that I was excited when we first got Hinrich. This is sheer nirvana. I’m ready for the regular season baby!

Have to throw in that...

He did the same against Jason Terry when he was guarding Rose. Terry couldn’t stay with him at all.

Holy shit

I turned it off after the 3rd quarter, thinking this team had some serious issues. They still do have some issues, but one of them isn’t Rose. He’s already the Bulls’ best player, and he needs to play a lot if this team is going to win. I’m pretty sure he will now; I don’t see how VDN can possibly bring him off the bench.

This is a really nice change from last year

when we were the team blowing the huge 4th quarter leads. Even if it was against the Mav scrubs, it’s nice to see the guys on the floor not giving up and going at it hard.

Couple of tidbits from 2nite's game.....

Since this was the 1st game I’ve fully got to watch and listen to, I wanted to throw out there what I saw 2nite during the game.

1. Derrick Rose is the REAL DEAL! No doubt about it, sometimes earlier in the game, he was more passive on offense than being aggressive, but as the game wore on and the Bulls made it close, his will to win and competitive fire took over. Unbelievable display 2nite, Bulls make the playoffs, he is ROY.
2. Tyrus Thomas’s improvement is really showing, he is more active on the boards and defense. His outside shot is much better but he still needs to work on finishing at the basket with finess and power.
3. Larry Hughes is of no use to this team what so ever!!! He should be the odd man out, Starter my @$$! He wants to help, just sit down and give advice when needed.
4. Kirk Hinrich hasn’t got comfortable with his new role, who knows if he ever will.
5. Ben Gordon needs to be signed with Rose as the PG, he will get so many open looks and at the end of the game, with Rose being able to penetrate and teams having to respect him, it is going to help Ben starting hitting those game changing shots again.
6. Aaron Gray is a valuable backup on this team. Losing the weight has helped, has great foot work and is a hard worker. Good back up for 10-20 minutes a night when needed.
7. Young team that still makes too many mistakes. We will lose some games due to stupid turnovers.
8. Defense needs to improve tremendously. Still no where close to where it was 2 seasons ago.
9. Most other teams 1-5 is definetly better than ours, but I will say most other teams 1-9 is not better than ours. That is where we can hurt other teams and steal a game or to from the older veteran teams.
10. Luol Deng needs to get back to slashing to the basket with Rose on the floor.

Just like everyone else though, really excited about Derrick Rose and his potential!!!!!
