Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

i was at the game on

saturday night.  I have some concerns.

Ok, first off let me state that i missed the first quarter.  cta problems, you know the dish. But so that means i missed Derrick Rose's 7 point madness.  But let me say this:

In the first half, Vinny Del Negro's choice of play was Kirk with ball at top of key getting a pick from noah.  This play worked twice and then it just kept getting botched up cause noah isn't a threat and kirk isn't that good of a passer in traffic.

In the second half, Vinny D ran this play.  He had rose bring the ball up to the top of the key, out past the three point line.  Drew gooden stood at the post position and tried to screen out kirk's man, as kirk was under the rim.  Kirk would run circles around this screen, out past it, then back towards the hoop.  Rose couldn't make the pass, not even once, when kirk  was open moving towards the hoop with his defender behind him.  The play then called for rose to dribble towards the wing where he attempted to throw a post-entry pass to gooden who was trying to get position on boozer.  Because gooden is goofy and has no post skills what so ever, not to mention he was guarded by a beast, he would eventually receive the post up pass, out far far FAR away from the paint.  He would then proceed try to go one-o-one with boozer and then would, obviously, fail.  He succeeded only once when he got into the lane using his quickness missing the layup then rebounding the ball and putting it in.

Ok.  Vinny Del Negro ran these plays into the ground.  Good lord, in the 2nd and 3rd quarters it killed us.  Rose was great in the open court, but you could tell vinney was trying to do his thing: running these ridiculious two plays, yelling from the sideline like an over zealous coach and having his way.  First off, gooden is not that good in the post. He has good instincts, but doesn't know how to use his body in relation to his defenders body (i.e. shifting his weight to counter-act the defenders position).  I understand that vinney probably wants to establish a post game for bulls,  which everyone says they need.  I understand that he is intrigued by the prospect of using Gooden to his full potential.  But seriously? What coach hasn't tried doing that.  I bet he watched gooden play in college and thinks he can be that good at the pro level.  You have to play to your personell. You dont have a post player who can demand doubles, then stop goign to it.

i know you are going to say he is "tinkering" or playing around with the lineup.  Its a joke.  I started a "fire vinny" chant at the end of the game where he went to the gooden play in the last 30 seconds when they were down by 5.  It resulted in an open look at a three but mostly because a jazz defender slipped.  I think the fire vinny chant is funny cause it is still pre-season and he has only coached like 5 games. hahaha.

With a line-up of kirk, deng, noah, and tyrus thomas with rose handling the ball, which was actually what was in for large stretches.  Any person who knows anything about basketball would say to run.  This lineup is our future.  Rose is really great in open court at this point.  RUN RUN RUN RUN. tyrus and noah can rebound and they are like deer running the break.  All the other players are just fill-ins for future better players that we can trade for or sign to contracts that are made by getting rid of these guys. Hughes, Gordon, and Gooden are not going anywhere.  Unfortunately for us, those players make too much money given how much they will contribute.  Im sure they will be useful once their current contracts run out and they can sign on a championship level team for what they are actually worth.  They aren't working hard to improve.  Forget em and get over it.   Those five -- kirk, deng, noah, tyrus, and rose -- are the ones with potential and the ones with the best set of skills.  Start that five and run.

and fire vinny.  Especially if it is still the pre-season cause that would be super funny.

This is the preseason.

Parts of it aggravates everyone, but a true assessment can’t be made until we get into the regular season. VDN has to figure out what he has and now is the time to do it. If they get film on what not to do at least they are watching post-game film these days. Better get it out of their system now than later. I have my worries, but until VDN trots out some horrible starting line up during the regular season I am not going to condone any fire Vinny chants. Its extremely premature and rather stupid actually. Chant “I’m an idiot” or something instead. Its the preseason. Wait and see.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Ok

so “idiot” was probably uncalled for, but it is still ridiculous.

No, I think it was called for.

I mean, the guy even seems particularly proud of his “fire Vinny” chants.

The Game chose him !

Yeah, I'm not getting why that's funny.

Sad, maybe, but how do you know to chant that when you haven’t even seen what the guy’s got? You could have attended the press conference where he was introduced and started a similar chant there, too. Funny? I don’t think so…

Nice.

After last fall’s boos and “Kobe!” chants led the team to wet its collective shorts, let’s now do the same for a young, inexperienced coach: I’m sure that little Madison Square Garden culture will help. I know it’s a litle funny because it’s so ridiculously early and in preseason, but other fans might take your chant seriously, and it could become a real refrain later on (in what’ll probably be a very up and down season).

It's the preseason and Ben Gordon didn't play

VDN appears to be running a 7 second shot clock offense that is more like a 17 second shot clock to limit the number of possessions for the opponent.

I think the offense improves when Ben Gordon is healthy and positioned to receive passes from Hinrich and Rose. If it’s Hughes or Thabo perched behind the arc, their defender will sag off them to protect the paint from dribble penetration from the point guard.

I am curious about your VDN screamer thoughts.

in the Daily Herarld

Mike McGraw says that VDN purposely “scaled back the offense to include only basic schemes”…so maybe that’s why it seemed like he ran those “plays into the ground”.

This is the most ignorant post I've ever seen

Ok, maybe not the most ignorant, but it’s up there. First of all, Gordon is the leading scorer, and the second best player on the team(maybe best since Rose is still a rookie), and he’s not being paid that much. Sure it’s his fault he’s on the QO, but that’s because he’s got Latrell Sprewell’s agent. Second of all, give Vinny a break. No, he’s not Phil Jackson, but he’s a hell of a lot better than Jim Boylan. Even if he does suck, we’re not supposed to do that great either. Gooden is a pretty decent player, and he has good contributions for the size of his contract. Hughes sucks, but that’s a known fact and common knowledge on here. Next time, instead of staring at the gay couple, actually watch the game. And don’t ask to join in.

Aside from mandoman's premature "fire Viiny chants"

I think his emphasis on “Vinny Del Negro ran these plays into the ground…yelling from the sideline like an over zealous coach” is interesting and something to hope VDN has the talent to make quick adjustments. Specifically, that he is adaptable to defensive assignments of opposing personnel with his "scaled back offense of only the basic schemes"…

The majority of basic schemes in basketball also factor in the ability of certain position players being able to best a defender and score. Which is not always the case on each possession with different defenses and personnel.

How fortunate is for some coaches (to coach less) and to have a great player and basically just run a play to get the ball in the hand of his star(s) in a favorable location on the floor and the rest is up to the superstar….

VDN will need time and experience to get to this level, then he’ll also be in line for the big bucks $$$.

It wouldn’t hurt also if the bulls win the lottery again and draft a scoring machine “BIG” like Beasley with a mature attitude to pair with Rose

or

Deng and/or Tyrus develops the killer instinct of finishing a game offensively similiar to Ben Gordon when the game is on the line, yet having the benefit of better size.

I question

the information coming from a guy who happily claims he started “fire Vinny” chants. If VDN is in fact calling plays out it still is only preseason. When he coached the scrubs earlier in the year he hardly spoke at all. Now he is apparently calling a lot of the plays. That still does not indicate he will do that in the regular season. Perhaps that’s how he works in practice and he is treating preseason more like practice. I still say this judgment of VDN is premature and there is very little to indicate he will do any of these things (if they were even true) in the regular season.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.
