Preseason Open Game Thread #4: Bulls vs Utah Jazz

[I'll just promote this FanPost as today's game thread. Tonight's game will be played at Assembly Hall in Champaign, a place where I had some great memories cheering on my Alma Mater. Though not so much in the Deron Williams (the man of the hour tonight in Champaign) era ... this group was more my team. Awesome memory #1 and #2. Original FanPost is after the jump -ed.]

Star-divide

Tonight (7:30 CT) Assembly Hall welcomes back the finest point guard to play for the Illini in recent memory, and hopefully the finest point guard to come out of Chicago in...ever.  There's a lot to be excited about tonight: the possible appearance of Ben Gordon and disappearance of Larry Hughes, more time for Joakim Noah now that he's had a few practices, and of course the general thrill of seeing (semi) pro hoops again.  I'm looking for three things.  First, for the defense to play with more consistent intensity, as this will go a long way to determining how quickly the Bulls play well overall.  Second, I'm watching the Derrick Rose, hoping he'll show the same aggressiveness early that he does in the fourth quarter.  Most importantly I'm hoping that he and his teammates continue to mesh.  Imagine when Tyrus starts catching those lobs, and when Thabo realizes that, with Derrick, you can start throwing them.

Nasty.

Did I mention Larry Hughes probably won't play?

There's other cause for intrigue.  Utah is at something of a crossroads this season, and has been linked to the Bulls in a few trade rumors, like most of the league.   In this case, however, there's good reason; Boozer may leave after this year, and Utah may be spooked into trading him before the deadline.  There's no available player who would look better in the red and white.  A deadline deal of Ben Gordon, Tyrus Thomas, Gooden and number 1 for Boozer, Kyle Korver and Collins the Lesser would make me the happiest trade-nik this side of Marty Burns.  Or Montgomery Burns.

A fan can dream, anyway.

“draft-nik” = “trader.” And even after that, still not funny.

Boozer...

Would certainly solve the low post scoring problem. But can he be persuaded to play defense?

by Carlitro on Oct 17, 2008 4:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

no.

I don’t think it was a matter of motivation either. He plays for Sloan, so in lieu of good defense he just fouls.

He's not a good help defender,

but he’s not awful at man to man – he can be counted on to neutralize his man. The Jazz have a porous interior defense because of their perimeter-minded and defense-allergic center. Maybe I’m crazy, but combining Noah and Boozer down low, with Deng on the wing, Rose penetrating…I could see that team being balanced, tough, and at some point, championship caliber. It would depend on Rose becoming a superstar, yes. But that’s the basket holding our eggs already.

Consolidate. I don’t care if you don’t get full value: consolidate. Paxson hasn’t yet understood (or demonstrated that he understands) that in basketball 5 + 5 does not equal 10. One “10”, in fact, is more valuable than a whole team of “5s”. Moreover, Jason Kidd had a good point when he noted that the growth of both Paul and Williams was facilitated by having talented players around them. Paul had West and Williams had…well, you see where I’m headed.

Do you think

that Boozer would stay here over going to Miami (which has been rumored)?

I wouldn't make the trade

unless we got him to sign (NOT JUST AGREE TO) a longterm extension. If not, no dice. We’d be giving more more talent, but getting the best talent – and it’s exactly those Miami rumors (which I put credence in: the Salt Lake might be beautiful, but a hoot it is not) which would pressure the jazz into a deal.

Hopefully Tyrus just dunks on his head a few times tonight, however, has a break out year, and makes this a moot point. :)

How many low post scorers actually play good defense anyways?

I just realized that there are a select few. Garnett and Duncun and maybe Dwight Howard?

Let’s stop being greedy

Yeah, I thought to myself, "The Bulls could've really used Frank Williams a few years ago..."

But then I remembered that they had him, and he absolutely sucked. What happened!? Can anyone explain to me how a guy that talented ends up looking so piss poor when given the shot at living his dream?

The speed of the NBA game

His dribble driving ability was not a factor once all the NBA defenders could keep up with him.

He never really had a solid jumpshot, so the speed thing really elevated him at the college level but dramatically leveled him off at the NBA level.

I may write several angry comments about it.

It was just funny

in the interview today that VDN said Gordon will play today and Hughes will not while tomorrow Hughes will play and Gordon will not. My conclusion is only the same as what the good reporters of Chicago sports will conclude if they are up to their earlier form. I got to it first though. Spread it around! :)

I've heard the same thing from numerous

anonymous sources, well-placed in the Bulls organization. The word is that Hughes was mocking BG’s toe injury with a knuckle injury. Additionally, GB is resentful of LH’s salary – he thinks he should be the highest paid player on the team.

So far...

TT has two fouls and Noah was put in for him. One of his fouls was from trying for a charge.
Rose had a tip in, made a three, and perhaps another basket. So he is doing well offensively. Defensively he got a steal.
Gordon has made a layup and a three at least. The three was set up by Rose.
Gooden is getting pushed around in the paint.
Kirk hit a shot.

Yeah

Noc looked very solid last night. Let’s trade him.

God theNoc hate on here is a bit much.

Trade Hinrich (he who deserves the Noc hate) and Thabo (he’ll be lost now with Gordon and Rose and unfortunately Hughes).

I’d love to trade Hughes to but nobody’s taking him….

by majoyenrac on Oct 18, 2008 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Noc fits really well with Rose,

as long as he isn’t asked to play major minutes, and as long as he plays within himself. I see this as a rebound year for Nocioni. Last year, he really did press – when he tries to create off the dribble he’s pretty awful (unless a slow-footed four is on him). He was trying to be a “spark.” Instead, he just exploded in a bad, bad way.

The players who will benefit the most from the arrival of Rose, in my opinion, are Ben Gordon, Noce, and Deng (open looks on drive&kick) and Tyrus (when he runs the floor).

I can understand the Noce hate. But it’s a new season, new system, with new leaders. I just wish people would wait to see how it plays out. The Rose/Noce connection has looked great so far.

His rebounding has been solid.

and he’s gotten to the foul line a few times. Not bad. He is still not doing everything he needs to though. Some of those short jumpers should start going in and he needs to find some finishing moves down near the basket.

Noc looking good

Why do you guys hate the guy now? He’s a player that is essential to have on a playoff team. He’s good at pissing people off like posey.

by armstrong2389 on Oct 17, 2008 8:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He is bad at rebounding (just watch tonights game and you can see it)

he gets out of position on defense, he still jumps towards shooters and falls for their fakes like a rookie would, and he makes stupid fouls. He needs to limit those things, but it seems like the harder he tries the more he does them. He needs to relax and just take the shots Rose sets up for him. That’s when he looks best. In position and under control.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Noccioni

Here is the thing with this guy… He is a glue guy. He does certain things well and can be a real positive on the court if used right. I think we see that every team he plays with Argentina and couple years back in his contract year. The problem with him is also that if things arent going well, he takes it upon himself to get it going and he is not that good to do that. Thats where some of his questionable shots come from and his stupid defense to over do things and not just play his role. With a PG who can break defense down, he can be a huge asset for us as a 7th man.

Gooden's

rebounding and defense in the paint just isn’t very good. His offense tends to be fine though. Which is why he gets to play. Both Noah and TT seem to stick rebounds much better than Gooden. Gooden has been particularly bad tonight with the rebounding and hasn’t come in with offense either.

What do you guys think of Thomas as a center?

There are times when I love it and others where I am not convinced…They should push the ball more with that lineup.

he can play center against Utah

because other than Boozer, their bigs aren’t physical or low post scorers. It all depends on the matchup. But I am excited about his rebounding tonight.

by DangerMouse on Oct 17, 2008 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and even though his shots arent falling

he is still gonna get to the line and he hits his free throws. If he plays 30 mins a night, he will find his niche on offense.

by lampnasty on Oct 17, 2008 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

are you talking in general or tonight specifically?

If in general, it just depends on the matchup. Against a Brad Miller or an Okur, sure….against Yao, Shaq, or Howard, not really.

If tonight, yes…I think he can take advantage of Okur on both ends…Okur doesn’t like to run, TT could just run him into the ground and use his quickness to cause some havoc

by NormVanBeer on Oct 17, 2008 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Both, in general and tonight?

Because it reminds me of Nellie ball a little bit…I love the idea of Tyrus, Deng and Thabo in the frontcourt with the right matchup…but, as you guys have pointed out, it may not be a good idea against the larger centers in the NBA…I like it. I used to play this lineup on 2k8.

Three Small Things I liked in the First Half

1) Aside from rebounding, Tyrus had a rough first half. He was torched by a guy he should never be guarding (Okur), and his shot wasn’t falling. But: he wasn’t yanked, he didn’t pout, and he kept rebounding hard.

There are gonna be games you shoot like crap, and the other guy is just good. Got to play through it (which is one Tyrus) and can’t just yank him (which is on VDN).

2) Noah looked better. He’s still rusty on offense, yes – and he never was particularly polished – but he was owning the defensive glass in his limited time. As Scotter pointed out, that will be key for him (and us).

3) Nocioni continues to mesh well with Rose. With his feet set, he’s the best spot-up three point shooting power forward outside of Dirk. Teams will struggle to match up.

I still get a tingling down my leg when I watch TT.

He has been a rebounding fool tonight which accounts for part of my tingling. The remainder running down my leg is more like tinkling, which occurs every time I see him miss another shot. But my mancrush continues to grow although I am also falling in love with another. As Shakespeare once said ….“A Rose by any other name should smell so sweet.” and DR is filling my bball fantasis with the sweet scent of a boquet of our finest roses.

Unfortunately, most of the other Bulls are leaving the distinct aroma of BS so far. But as long as Larry cannot screw things up even worse than usual, they still have a chance to pull this one out, which is becoming more crucial for their deflated egos as the preseason gets shorter and shorter.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

He is a very young rookie. He needs as much experience as he can get.

That’s how he’ll develop.

In any event, you don’t sit him to prevent fucking injuries. That is the worst strategy I have ever heard. He could be injured at any time, in practice or in a game.

Jerry Sloan

Showed real class by calling that timeout when Rose was limping. I know it’s preseason and the game doesn’t count, but I still think many in the same circumstance wouldn’t have done that.

Perhaps

But when he’s got such a quickness advantage over his man (like with Okur), I’d really like to see them run some isolation for him. He can blow past his man for layups or free throws, and he’s a very, very underrated passer. His turnover rate – against his reputation – is even pretty solid (at least it was last year). And if the defender sags way off him, he’ll have a series of wide open jump shots.

I’m really getting annoyed that we’re not seeing more of TT getting a chance to create a little offense.

Again,

I have no idea how he did: ‘cause I couldn’t see the game!

The box used to have TT w/ 30mins, +15. But that changed to +13 in 26 min, beating(?) Deron’s +10 in 25.

So Gooden had 2rebs and 4pts in 19:39, w/ a -9. Gray had 2rebs, 2pts, and -1 in his 8:52? But I can imagine he didn’t look too good trying to deal with much quicker Boozer inside. (Or Okur on the perimeter? Yikes!)

And yeah, I never pay much attention to a single game’s +/-. But that’s all I got tonight.

Aaron Gray

Reminded me the scene in Shawshank Redemption when Brooks finally got released from prison, only to find that society had gotten itself in a “big damn hurry”. Gray looked like an old slow guy moving around, confused as to why all these young whippersnappers were moving around so quickly and stealing the ball from him.

This game should serve as a reminder as to the limits of Aaron Gray’s usefulness. He’s worthy of being on the roster and of spot duty, but my lord his limitations are significant.

Great to get a win!

Honestly tho, imo it really shows how much we need Gordon (or at least someone of his scoring caliber). He was the difference tonight…hope we don’t lose him and have Kirk and his 6-8 PPG as our permanent SG – We couldn’t could we? really?

by rquinsee on Oct 17, 2008 10:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not that I don't like Kirk

Just think his not what the Bulls need going forward

by rquinsee on Oct 17, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's not just having kirk replace him

it’s having gordon instead of hughes entirely. sure bg had a positive effect on the game, but there was also a complete absence of larry’s chucking. while i’m not in favor of keeping hinrich as a permanent starting 2 guard.. there’s a bigger swing than would be in our rotation unless hughes really does get benched for good.

He still looks for his own shot first

which isn’t necessarily bad if they recognize that and run the offense accordingly during his stints out there.

How about this explanation as to why BG was playing PG in the 4th qtr

They WEREN’T showcasing him. They were trying to see if he could back up Rose—thereby allowing them to trade Kirk sooner rather than later.

by hlac on Oct 17, 2008 11:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

definately

but ben isn’t a pg thats going to create shots for his teammates, hes more of an arenas type point guard

His stats are as good as Fields -- that's the sad thing

Well ...

I didn’t watch it, but it sounded like he played good from here.

by Prevenge on Oct 18, 2008 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he is going to be a back up Rose

I don’t mind to have a Arenas tipe of player… At least he scores points. And Hughes? What does he does when he is running the point? SHIT ALL THE TIME!!!

Like a lot of you already said, BG had a big night. I was not expecting to see him playing like he did on the first game after the injury. But the reason that we won was that he our 3p percentage was better and we didn’t had Hughes missing shots, after shots… I hope VDN can understand that and not select him all season long

Please Pax, don't trade Hughes! Just make sure that he stays injured until... 2010!!!

He looks for his own shots first

That's what I thought too

and he was paired with Thabo. If Kirk goes maybe we play Thabo with BG and BG and Hughes with Rose.

Except that as much as I want Thabo to succeed, he is progressing very slowly. Darn.

Gordon was encouraging

He still had his Ben Gordon moments but he showed an improved enough handle and if this is indeed the case BG should move ahead of Kirk in the rotation. They both can’t guard the opposition’s 2 and neither are PGs but only one can shoot and score.

Last night also re-emphasized why Hughes cannot get significant minutes this year.

Improved handle? BG lit up the court last night on offense, but I didn't see improved

dribbling. His dribbling looked the exact same as last year; he doesn’t seem to protect the ball like a PG or a “good” dribbler does when he handles the ball. He gets the ball poked away from him too often, and I didn’t notice any improvement from last year in that area (but it was only one darn game of the preseason). There were more than one instance where I was holding my breath when he was getting guarded out side the 3 point arc. Then he would shoot the ball and I remembered why he is so important for our current team. The man is just so damn accurate.

Also, I think I recall you saying more than once that Kirk is not a PG and I think that is just absurd. Except for last year, Kirk’s shown that his skill level is in the 15-20 range of point guards in the league. He also had 7 assists and 1 turn over last night in 31 mins. I’d take that every night from a point guard. The one thing that is bad for Kirk is that he doesn’t shoot or score well anymore (not sure if he did it well ever, but I know he was average in the past at it). I wonder if Kirk works on that part of his game…. he hasn’t shown improvement this preseason in his shooting/scoring. What happened to those games in the past where he’d score 20 – 25 points? We haven’t seen that at all the last year. I think he had one game last year where he scored 25 points.

Gordon

needs to get used to having Rose set up shots for him. As I said further above, Gordon needs to either catch and shoot or catch and drive. His problem comes when he gets the ball and instead of doing either of those things he pounds the ball a while and lets the defense get set up for his drive/shot. With Rose there he should get plenty of opportunities for good shots without reverting to his weaknesses. This was Gordon’s first game with Rose. Give him a few games to adjust before assuming he won’t be able to avoid the weaknesses of his game in this new offense.

Kirk’s stat lines from a PG are ok. Those stat lines applied to a SG are not though. Which is his problem. He can’t get away with a line like that as a starting SG. I think he had a 30+ scoring game last spring (against Indiana maybe?) but that was his one big game all last season. Kirk needs to average at least 15+ points a game and weed out those games where he only shows up for 7 points a game. Not sure if his is up to it though with how things are looking so far. If he wasn’t making so much money he’d make a great backup PG on the Bulls. As it is I think he’d make a decent starting PG on another team. Shoehorning him in into the SG role is not doing him any good. The times he is out there playing PG he looks the most at ease.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

Ideally I'd like to the Bulls to rest Rose tonight,

to heal up as BG gets some rest, then pair them together in practice for the next week, the next preseason game, and the rest of the season. Kirk’s the best backup point guard in the league, and a credible two guard off the bench. The big criticism of him was that he’s a combo guard. Well get this: now, that’s a good thing. He can log thirty minutes a game and help us win. If that raises his value…well, I’ve been beating that to death for months now.

I don’t buy the idea that we should bench Gordon because he’s an upcoming unrestricted free agent. Gordon wants two things: money and a starting role. Well, if we can give him those, and if we’re winning (which I can actually see now – Rose is farther along than I’d thought) I can imagine him long term. Will people post him up? Yes, a little bit. But having a backcourt with an elite penetrator and elite shooter would be hell to guard. It’s a trade off in our favor, and I don’t think it’s close.

Of course, that’s why Utah, Miami, and New Orleans have shown interest in Ben. They see the same things we do. Hopefully Pax and VDN see it, too.

This is how our lineup should be

PG: Rose
SG: Gordon
SF: Deng
PF: Thomas
C: Noah/Gooden(depending on the size of the other center)
BPG: Hinrich(can also backup the 2)
BSG: Thabo(can also backup the 3)
BSF: Nocioni(can also backup the 4)
BPF: Noah/Gooden(depending on which one is starting and can also backup the 5)
BC: Gray
Larry Hughes: banished to the end of the bench
Roster Fillers: Played sparingly but decently

Derrick Rose attempted 3 three-pointers? Meh

Unless he’s open, he shouldn’t be going all Baron Davis with the longball. Other than that, for a 23 minute performance 14 points and 5 assists (to only 1 turnover) is pretty damn good against the 2nd best PG in the NBA. Gordon looked great next to Rose, and if the team plays well then Nocioni’s antics can actually help this team.

He did make one from behind the three point line.

I don’t think 1-3 is bad, especially since he made his first one and probably felt pretty comfortable. He shouldn’t be shooting any more than that, certainly not anywhere near Gordon and Noc’s attempts, but what he did attempt last night didn’t bother me. It drew the defense to him out there where they would normally drop back a bit with a non-3 shooter which means being a threat out there could open the floor up for a good pass to someone else.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 18, 2008 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess, I just don't want him to fall into a habit of being a PG who chucks a lot of bad shots

He attempted 10 FGs, which is a fine number for him, and there will be games where he will have to shoot more/less depending how into the game his teammates are. It’s just more of getting him in an established offensive rhythm where he isn’t going to be flustered into forcing bad shots up, which has been how teams have beaten the Bulls for some time now.

I hear you

but I don’t think it’s a worry: Derrick Rose is Baron with a brain.

I want him to keep shooting when he’s open. Shooting in games is a form of practice as well. If you don’t shoot, it becomes a stigma, people play off you…not what we want to happen.

I guess when

you’ve had to see Larry Hughes play Rose seems pretty conservative in comparison. He probably should be taking more in for a layup rather than jump shooting, but he was being pretty aggressive there in the beginning and was probably trying to establish with the defense that he could be a threat from outside.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 18, 2008 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No worry there, Ozzie

Been watching this kid since last year when I posted that article about the DDM offense. He is a true point guard. Think Isaiah Thomas; can beat you so many ways, but winning is the only thing, and he’ll do what’s needed, not score for his own enjoyment. I’m figuring if he could cause a 30 point blowout without scoring a point he’d be as happy as a pig in slop. So hopefully, just like MJ, he can make life easier on his team by scoring or not scoring; he’ll read the situation and react accordingly.

Also, since correlation always equals causation

Larry Hughes not playing=automatic win :)

Correlation always equals causation commentary

Your insightful commentary is the most brilliant and accurate equation since Einstien’s theory of relativity. Since all things are relative, it may not guarantee an automatic win but will definitely result in a positive charge in the force, just as last year’s formula was uncannily useful as a predictor of results.

Any 4th quarter coaching decision by Boylan would automatically guarantee the Bulls would blow the game.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.
