Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Preseason Open Game Thread #3: Bulls vs Minnesota Timberwolves

Tough to keep up with all the injuries (those real and those deemed fake by tough dudes), but from what I can gather: Gordon and Ruffin are out. Gooden's back in the lineup, and Noah's back and wearing goggles.

I'm going to be attending the game tonight (7:30, CSN), so that'll be...something.

He had a death in the family

Smells of the coaching staff trying to placate to the troublemaker Hughes

by RogersPark Kris on Oct 14, 2008 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Heh

How on Earth is a death in Rose’s family an attempt by the coaching staff to placate Hughes?

Do you suppose VDN sent one of his assistants to kill one of Rose’s family just to shut Hughes up?

That seems a bit extreme, but if he did, I bet he sent Del Harris.

by Sports2 on Oct 14, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

You miss practice, you get benched.

Or is it something to assure Hughes that his minutes aren’t going to be severely cut.

serious question for the blog:

why do coaches play Larry Hughes? Is it the money, or is it that he can occasionally create off the dribble, his size, what?

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Oct 14, 2008 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

that's gotta be it.

hopefully that means, then, Rose will make him obsolete.

The poster formerly known as Freethefro.

by MPG on Oct 14, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Kirk is better off the dribble than Hughes

Kirk just has almost no finishing ability and his smaller size and lower elevation leads to more blocks. Ergo, he doesn’t go to it as often as he should.

Tell me you saw his crossover penetration where he did a finger roll airball. That’s Kirk defined right there.

Drew Gooden's pretty much the only thing I like about this game so far.

Larry Hughes’ 3 on 1 attempt to be Chris Paul was pathetic. Tyrus Thomas is still out of control and tries to do his Nene Hilario “I can be a PG too” crap by dribbling the ball up the floor full speed instead of giving it up to a guard. Nocioni is throwing up contested shots. The offense looks out of sync with Rose in(which is understandable at this early stage). Confusion on screens left and right, and moving screens on offense. Aaron Gray looks AWFUL out there. I could go on and on. Dumb fouls, particularly from Hinrich on the hand check with 10 seconds left. The first quarter was fun at least!

Tyrus must be frustrated when he’s in a position to receive a lob and instead the passer (Gooden, then Hughes) turns the ball over. Tyrus’s teammates have to figure out a way to capitalize on his athleticism.

by Ozzie Montana on Oct 14, 2008 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I know why he missed practice.

I don’t agree with the Bulls benching because of that. The reason he missed wasn’t because he was injured. He didn’t do anything bad. He missed for a very legit and unavoidable reason. Why use the same rules as they have for the above to apply to his situation? The other players need to get used to playing with him on the floor, not someone like Hughes. Getting used to playing with Hughes is a waste of time.

I still wouldn't.

I don’t think anyone actually respects Larry Hughes, so he can’t cause mutinies like Wallace can, deserved or no.

by Prevenge on Oct 15, 2008 11:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I would do it because

at this point (a) Larry Hughes still views himself as a player whereas Wallace is content to ride the pine into retirement (b) Hughes is bad at a position where we are stacked, whereas Wallace is bad at a position where we’re thin.

Wallace can’t cause mutinies anymore; and the only reason he could in the first place was because he stepped into a sitution where the players were sick of their coach. Nobody’s sick of VDN – yet.

this is exactly

what should be tried in the preseason. it doesn’t matter, so players should be testing the limits of their games (hence why i want to see as many stupid lob situations involving tyrus as possible). if deng could get in 5 3s a game, i would be extremely happy, just so the team would have an idea of his 3 pt performance under (a semblance of) pressure.

we'll be bad for the next two years

d rose is the answer/truth/etc… a marbury-type who fulfills his potential (though we’ll be left without the choice interview gems). deng and TT will improve vastly because of drose. we need him to hit 22/23 yoa and thenl it’ll be on until 30 at the earliest. the only caveat is that the world doesn’t end in 2012 (as per the mayan calendar).

by tropic of capricorn on Oct 14, 2008 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

I think Rose has much better team sense (remember the spin move he made top of key, not to beat his man for his shot, but to make the bounce pass for Thabo’s wide open/made 3) than Marbury ever showed. But I mostly know him from the PHX days, not MIN.

No kidding.

I am hoping it bounces back fast because they’ve put their money into defense and talk about it nonstop. If that doesn’t even appear they are going to wish they at least had offense.

Everything I post is speculation. I have no insider information nor ideas deemed concrete enough by those who are self-elected to regulate post content.

by cranscape on Oct 14, 2008 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions

It starts with the guards on the perimeter.

But even McCants scored by beating three Bulls inside once, after Thabo had forced him baseline.

Point being, they’re not close to working as a unit yet. People here are pining for BG, but I think the D is a greater problem, and I don’t see how the addition of BG helps (though more makes would mean less transition for them. That’s when BG gets me PO’ed: for his shot selection). Addition of the Rook doesn’t help the D either, even though he’s clearly our future star.

Can’t just assume they’ll do it cause they did before. Deng and Thabo are the only ones I see doing the (mostly) right things, and it’s easier for them ’cause of their size. Maybe Noah will help.

I saw the game at 2am

okay…just the first half (then i fell asleep, of boredom??) I read the comments here on blogabull before watching the game, and found some of the comments here misleading…

Kirk i thought did a real good job of keeping that offensive tempo moving, the best play in the entire game might have been kirk’s steal and shot put toss to tyrus who dunked it with a great ammount of poise and authority. I especially loved the new defensive strategy which fits in with the high tempo. The pg (whether it be rose or kirk) would meet the other teams pg as soon as the other team checked the ball in. Usually teams dont pick up the pg until after or around the half court line.

THe first foul kirk picked was SO an offensive charge, hinrich definetly beat his guy to the spot. What i liked was what happened afterwards, there was no mopey iowan, he didnt walk around slumping and bitching, instead as soon as he got the ball he ran down and drove at the rim, he got a slight bump, missed his layup but the officials gave him the foul, and he basically shot two free throws and got what he lost on the defensive end right back. THats a veteran move!

Hinrichs defense was definetly on, but you could see it taking a toll on him. I think when rose first got game time, it was after a full timeout, and the camera showed vdn say something to kirk, kirk nodded, and then vdn said something to rose….i saw it as this

Vdn asks a tired kirk, “need a break”
Kirk nods “uh duh”
vdn looks to a bored rose “rose your in”

i dont know if thats true or not but it made sense, with the offensive tempo being as fast as it was, and the defense at least on the perimeter being so tight, it made since for that move to be true.

If i were to just watch the 1st quarter (which is true enough) and evaluate the bulls, i would say i like what i saw, of course how many games did the bulls look good at the half and then die a horrible death in the 4th. Still this thread was sort off in its demeanor, but maybe its easy to say such a thing when the games are still exhibition games.

On Behalf of Sue, Wjb, Bullshooter, and all the other Hinrich fans...Ill keep the Hinrich Hope coming...There will be light....

I know it's preseason

but the box score shows we used our best players less Gordon.

Ugh!
