Open Game Thread #33: Bulls vs. New York Knicks

[Thanks to joemoses for tonight's game thread. -Matt]

Its hard to believe we lost to this team in November.  To see how ###'d up this team is, you have to listen to this song.

The Knicks are 1-13 on the road and have lost 6 straight away from home.

Watch out for David Lee who had double-doubles in five out his last seven games.  However, for reasons only Isiah knows, he chose to play him only 15 minutes against the Rockets the last time out.  Also Nate Robinson has been averaging over 17 ppg the last eight games.

Deng is still listed as day to day.  He didn't practice on Monday and had an MRI on Friday confirming that he has tendonitis.

I would love to see Sefo get some time guarding Crawford or Richardson, even a few minutes giving Robinson some length. Also, lets use Gray's bulk on Curry for a few turns.  I fear this is one of those games that Wallace will wander and let Curry eat him up underneath.

A very good night for a win!!

Nice preview, Joe

Anyone know the story with the Curry/Randolph pairing?  I know 2-3 weeks ago, Zeke resolved to keep them separated (only 1 on the floor at all times), but then I think he vacillated on that and had them both starting again.

If Deng can't play, I imagine Noc starts at the 3 against this line-up.

Dress Nichols
The Knicks drafted him.  When he asked about playing for a roster spot on the Knicks Isiah told him they wanted to send him to Europe.  Nichols was shocked because other teams were interested in drafting him to play this season.  Isiah told him he could try and earn a roster spot, but Isiah knew all along he would keep Fred Jones.

If there is one player in the league that would love to dress and play against Isiah it is Demetris Nichols.

Nichols
He was brought up from the D-League while Curry was sent back.  Just in the past day or two.  But "who?" is likely the correct reaction.

I actually thought that they let go of Thomas Gardner for Drew.  What happend to Gardner?

It shouldn't be too tough of a matchup
The key to beating the Knicks is just showing up on gameday!  Shit, a lineup of me, sue369, Bayern Munich, joemoses, and my deceased grandpa could take on the Knicks, and probably beat them.

In all seriousness, we need to limit their offensive rebounds (they are 2nd in the League to us), force turnovers, and attack the lane, considering how weak they are in the middle.  They have no shot blocking presence, which can amount to easy layups, or getting their "bigs" in foul trouble, and allowing us to score points from the foul line, which is something we have lacked doing this season, seeing how we are towards the bottom in makes and attempts from the free throw line.

These are things we wish for...
a sore Achilles, but not torn; a little flu, but not pneumonia; a tight back, but not a slipped disk....  Basically, the infirmaties of old age and over use.  How much is enough to get the young guys a legitimate look-see?

Not a bad idea, that'd get Wallace off the salary cap in a year.

by Sports2 on Jan 8, 2008 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

The key to the game
is to run the heck out of the knicks. Randolph and Curry are out of shape, so I'd run at them every time they were on the floor.  Tire out those legs!

Curry can, Zach can't
But Zach actually rebounds okay, it'sthe defense and shot selection that are killers.

Watching Z-Bo
It's hard to believe this guy pulls in 12 boards a night.  Sometimes he get embarrassed by small player out rebounding him.  If he was little more aggressive he could pull in nearly 15 boards a night.

Duhon-Hinrich-Nocioni-Smith-Gray
Ben Wallace singing.
Hinrich mega-deal singing.
Nocioni unncesessary singing.

Moves like that will keep this team in the cellar as far as talent level goes. The lineup they have out there makes me cringe. It is one of the 3 least talented in the NBA.

Gordon has to play PG and the teams needs a 6'6" swingman by his side. This pack of midgets does not get the deal done. They need a legitimate 6'11" center who can score and make layups, not the 6'7" circus act called Ben Wallace.

Noah is a complete joke. He will never amount to anything. The talent level has hit rock bottom. Bozo Paxson is responsible 100%. He's a fugging idiot no other way to describe it. Aaron Gray playing more than 10 minutes= LOL. Bulls are the biggest joke of the league not named the Knicks.

by Lateralus11 on Jan 8, 2008 6:02 PM CST reply actions

What are you Scottie Pip or Sam Smith?
Gordan can't play the point, maybe years from now if he gets 2,3 years practice he could  be mediocre playing the point maybe 3-4 dimes a night with 3-4 to's a night, plus points. Well the 6'6' swingman that was supposed to play point is Swiss but hasn't developed yet.  Maybe we will scrap that idea and put thabo at 3 like matt said.  Ben Wallace no comment...Noah is the truth he is just a rookie and hasn't been getting cosistant min.  Plus this summer he can hit the gym and bulk up a lil.   Aaron Gray is a good pick up in the 2nd round, if he does nothing else but hit free throws.

by Ibleedbullsred on Jan 8, 2008 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

Tyrus Thomas will be riding the pine
The new coach refuses to shake things up. The team is out of contention, what exactly is he holding on to?

Wallace must be bought out. He is a cancer and minutes vaccum. Take any NBDL center- they'll produce much more than Wallace in those minutes.

This Hinrich-Duhon monster... Scary thing. If I'm the GM I ship their asses out immediately, I don't care about return value. Get them the hell away from this team.

Gray must be given more minutes. If he doesn't suck he could be a backup in the future. If he sucks, then its too bad. Cut him.

Undersized effort guys are to be avoided at all cost. Nocioni must be put on the trade block with aggressive searching for offers. Gordon has to go if he can't play point guard. He's too short for a starting SG.

Deng is the only legitimate starter left. The rest must be shipped out and the team must be blown up. This rat-pack of midgets, scrubs, and effort-character guys is an embarrasment. Bring in talent, talent, and talent.

Is it spring training yet?

by Bluelou on Jan 8, 2008 7:42 PM CST reply actions

24 out of 25
The Bull's starting lineup has a lot to be desired.  I looked at the early box score and the lineup is just gross.  Plus, Duhon just missed another shot.

by Jesse07 on Jan 8, 2008 7:51 PM CST reply actions

Noc is off
Shots are coming up short and looks a step slow.  Is a green at the gills Noc better than all the other options we could put in?  Really?

Our offense is veeery clunky without Deng or Gordon in.  Pretty painful so far.  They got no "spark" player out there and we are playing like it.

by cranscape on Jan 8, 2008 7:53 PM CST reply actions

what is it...
about noc that would qualify him as green at the gills?  and why do folks find it so grotesquely mind-numbing that he would be a better option on offense than MOST of the starting unit?

by leeac on Jan 8, 2008 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

just the fact he is sick tonight and looking it
Most of the starting unit do not have any better options on the bench.  When Hinrich misses shots we'd have to put in Duhon...who misses shots.  At least if we put in one of Noc's alternates you might actually get some benefits.

by cranscape on Jan 8, 2008 8:04 PM CST up reply actions

my bad...
...i thought it was just another pot shot at noc.  gotta give it up to him for his effort, even though he's probably just infected the rest of the team with his flu over the last few hours.  then he'll be traded for sure for gasol...

by leeac on Jan 8, 2008 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

No worries.
I doubt a little germ would keep Noc off the court, but I'd rather he get healthy for future games with Deng injured rather than get himself really sick tonight against a team like NY.

by cranscape on Jan 8, 2008 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

I think that is referring to Noc being sick
As in, why is Noc with the flu a better option than a healthy Tyrus.

I feel for Noc, though - I've been sick for the past week, and I can't imagine trying to play basketball while feeling gross.

"I believe. I believe. It's silly, but I believe." (Miracle on 34th Street)

by wjb1492 on Jan 8, 2008 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I was referring to the creeping crud
Everyone has it and I'd be all for having Noc play if his fever was helping his game, but it don't seem like that.  And with Tyrus coming off a good game keeping Noc in there while sick doesn't seem like a good idea.

And how about this!  Noah, Gray, and Thomas on the floor at the same time and they are looking good.  Nothing like a New York team to give the young guys confidence.  All three are looking good.  Why wear out the older guys who are sick/hurt etc when you can give the young ones some burn.

ROFLMAO
Whoever wrote that cute game preview needs to eat some crow.

"Hard to believe we lost to this team in November" ...ummm... the Knicks have won 2 of 3 against the Bulls this year. They will at least tie the season series. What the hell are you talking about?

"To see how #### up this team is..." Which team? Bulls or Knicks. I'd say both are on about the same level right now. You want to badmouth the Knicks. Well then how ##### up are the Bulls, getting outscored 27-12 in the 4th quarter on their own floor.

The Cows were run out of their own building by the Knicks. Stop making excuses and trying to hid the obvious.

suck.  Time out fire issah and thanks for the draft picks.

by Ibleedbullsred on Jan 8, 2008 10:11 PM CST up reply actions

Probably not a Knicks fan,
just someone stating the obvious.  The Bulls are brutal.  A team full of gut-less players.  Pax brought them in, stuck by them at the expense of a trade and now their has gone in the crapper.

by EdNealy on Jan 8, 2008 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

somebody was right about E-city he had 29
the last time we played them I think he had 1. You would think we were playing in NY. Then David Lee sealed it up with a +24.  Thomas, Noah and Gray had positive +- lines although Thomas and Noah shot like shit.

by Ibleedbullsred on Jan 8, 2008 10:09 PM CST reply actions

+/- rating
Seriously, can we stop talking about the +- ratings? If it's stats that really matter then take a look at the rest of TT's stat line and you can plainly see that any positive result is not due to his play.

You could even double it up for a 40 minute rating if you like and he still would have shot 2 for 14 (with yet more bone head plays that won't show up in any stat line).

Paint it any color but the +- rating is useless in basketball. It's a team sport, and this team is sucking hard right now.

by Khalid El-Amin on Jan 8, 2008 10:16 PM CST up reply actions

The team sport part is why +/- is useful,
particularly over time to help capture things that don't show up in the individual stats.

It's just not that useful in looking at a specific game to determine who had a good night, and especially not for guys who play limited minutes.

a good example was in the first half
I think Tyrus just had 2 points and a rebound in his stint, but the Bulls played great as a team in that time, and he was the one attacking the rim and collapsing the defense.

He can also do a mean entry pass.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 8, 2008 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry...
I'm not trying to be a dick... I'm just so sick of this team's direction right now.

by Khalid El-Amin on Jan 8, 2008 10:19 PM CST up reply actions

What an ugly game.
On offense, Tyrus looked lost. He should try posting up or shoot jump shots only! Driving is not his strong suite at this point.

by RogersPark Kris on Jan 8, 2008 10:10 PM CST reply actions

I think the worst part about this game
was that Boylan had a GREAT thing going with the kids all playing very well together, and scored a lot of points.

But then he went away from that and never fully returned to it.

And then he did the same old Skiles SHIT and keyed off BG's horrific playing in the 4th.

Bulls blow a 10 pt. lead in the 4th and lose the the LOUSY Knicks, with Eddie Curry getting (did I just hear it right?) 29 pts.????

SHIT!!!!

Is it spring training yet?

what happened to using the lineup that works??

that it works and Wallace will tune him out.

Exactly my thoughts
In fact, I was hoping Thabo would get in at the same time for Gordon.  We had the future within our grasp, and it just disappeared before our eyes.

by hlac on Jan 8, 2008 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

Not good.
Too many risky plays at the end of the game.  We had been doing pretty good getting to the open man and making easy shots and then all the sudden they switch to off balance, high coverage, low percentage shots and let the other team set the tempo. Meh.

by cranscape on Jan 8, 2008 10:12 PM CST reply actions

They didn't score a point in the last 4:16

Lousy on so many levels
Guys only had 18 assists on 42 made baskets and gave up 50% shooting, 40% from 3.

Milwaukee won, so we're officially back in last place in the Central.

And 2 days off, so we have to live with it till Friday.  (That one could be interesting, too, with the Sixers on a bit of a losing streak and the Bulls seeming to play down to their competition lately.)

Weird Reaction
Normally when the Bulls lose - and especially to a poor team - I get pretty annoyed.  This time, though, I didn't care.  In other words, it's apathy time.

These guys just aren't worth watching, let alone emotional investment.  And if the trade deadline passes with no action (which I expect) they won't be worth watching in the future, either.

Anybody have a similar reaction?

by Freethefro on Jan 8, 2008 10:23 PM CST reply actions

I wish...
I wish I could share that sentiment, but it's probably the same reason why I had season tickets when the Bulls were trotting out Marcus Fizer and Kalid El Amin.

I watch the Bulls whenever they're on national TV or New York cable.

by Freethefro on Jan 8, 2008 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

I suppose I did
I was at the game and I was angry that they couldn't put the Knicks away. By the time the collapse came, that's when the apathy set in, the game should've never been close so it didn't really matter what the result was I'd still be pissed that it got to that point.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 8, 2008 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

Thomas not the savior?
whats this, Tyrus plays crunchtime minutes and we still lose to the Knicks?  And here you would have thought from the comments on this site that playing him would guarantee they'd destroy a terrible team like New York.  Hmmmm

Even I (an official TT doubter) can see that you're just trying to bait an easy argument.

The worst part
is that Tyger wasn't here.  He's not going to believe it and will continue on with that "Just play Tyrus big minutes" campaign.

see
that comment there is your exact problem, Matt.  Its not Thomas vs. Nocioni.  Even if they sometimes play the same position, I can't think of two players who are any more different other than the fact that they both are pretty bad at guarding their man.  But "Nocioni was bad too" doesn't defend Thomas.  It just shows that our team has more problems that simply playing Tyrus Thomas will not solve, which you've often made sound like a panacea.

by JSlakov on Jan 8, 2008 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

oh, I disagree sir
I think they're the crux of the direction of the organization.

Both backup power forwards, so the role is up for grabs between them.

So do you go with the limited vet who can fill up a boxscore and the hearts of the grit-addicted? or the youngin with untapped potential who may yet lack the fundamental skill but does the little things (that's right, Noc sucks at the little things).

Or a spacing 4 versus an attacking, rebounding 4.

Or evil vs. good.

Do you like evil or something?????

Trends
  • I see a trend that the Bulls young players are not very good. Get them out there and even the dregs of the NBA have a very solid chance of beating us. Compare and contrast to 04-05.
  • I see a trend that the Bulls are getting progressively worse on defense.
  • For that matter, where the heck was Thabo?  Isn't he the natural guy to pick up some SF minutes?

by Sports2 on Jan 8, 2008 10:49 PM CST reply actions

when TT, Gray and Noah dominated?  I'd like to know what NBA Observer and BigScott think about your comments.

How many times has Boylan been quoted
in the last week saying Tyrus has to play under the basket, that he can't stray out to the perimeter...then he goes and starts him at small forward where all he does is wander the perimeter.

I guess the moral to the story is be careful what you wish for.

by alec on Jan 8, 2008 11:05 PM CST reply actions

Yeah it really bothers me
because it's not putting Tyrus in a position to succeed. It's a better position than the bench, however.

It's also concerning because does this mean that Tyrus is just going back to the bench when Deng comes back?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jan 8, 2008 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

against the knicks it does
he doesn't match up well at all.  But how many teams run out guys like Randolph and Curry?
