Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Tryus Thomas was nothing but bait.

I have heard a lot of complaining about why the Bulls could not have either LaMarcus Aldridge or Brandon Roy.  I was lobbying hard for Brandon Roy because he would complement Kirk and could play the point with BG.  The fact of the matter is:  I do not think Paxson ever wanted Tyrus Thomas.  Paxson had a plan to catch a big fish, and TT was just trade bait to entice Kevin McHale to move Garnett to Chicago, but everything blew up in Paxson's face when McHale decided only deal with his old friend in Boston.

Star-divide

To fully understand my argument, you need to look at all the moves that happened around the time.  First, McHale rejected the best Bull's trade that included Tyson Chandler, so the Bulls were trying to sweeten the deal.  Paxson drafted the best athlete with the most potential, Tyrus Thomas.  He also understood that any deal for KG would take multiple players, so he made a slick draft day trade to grab an extra player, Victor Khryapa.  Victor would offset the loss of either Deng or Noce or both in his next trade.

Next, he wanted to dump Chandler for an expiring deal to give the Timberwolves some cap relief which would allow them to pickup a player in free agency to complement the rest of the players sent over in the KG trade.  Tyson Chandler was traded for PJ Brown & JR Smith, and this part of the deal was complete.   I'm not sure when the deal fell through or if JR Smith was supposed to be included, and I still don't think anyone understand why the Bulls gave away JR for nothing, but they did.

Also in Paxson's master plan, he still needed a complementary PF/C to match up with KG, so he overpaid Ben Wallace to dismantle the old champs the Pistons and solidify the Bull's frontcourt.  This was going to allow the Bulls to have a 2 to 3 year run at the championship while the East was still wide open.  Everything was in place, but the deal never went down, and the summer backfired more than anyone could imagine.

The Bulls are a mess and still have at least two glaring holes.  It is very depressing.  Tyrus Thomas was only trade bait, and Bull's fans have to watch both player selected by Portland develop into two players that could desperately help this Bulls team.  Paxson went fishing, and he didn't catch anything.   The worst part about going fishing is that if you don't catch anything you are left with no fish, and you realize you just had a boring day on a boat with bait.  Now Paxson has to decide what to do with the leftover chum (Ben Wallace & Tyrus Thomas).  Nobody likes chum if it stays around too long it is just going to smell and ruin your boat.

I've read and
heard on several sports shows that Pax really wanted TT. In fact one person said Pax drooled everytime he watched TT play.
Win, just win.

Yeah
he wanted him because they thought that he would be like T-Mac with D.  But he hasn't showed the work ethic that it takes to get to that elite level.

T-Mac?
I don't understand that comparison.  I thought T-Mac could dribble and shoot when he came into league.  Thomas showed neither when he was in college from what I saw in NCAA tourney and doesn't have any "guard" like skills.  Not saying he can't be effective on both ends but T-Mac seems like totally different player always

where did you
hear that at?  T-Mac with D??  The "D" part is true, but never the T-Mac part.  That's the first time I've ever heard that in reference to TT.

He was NEVER a T-Mac type of player.  In his only year at LSU he was a run-the-floor, slashing, hight-flying, shot-blocking, high-energy guy who could had lots of offensive potential.

The Bulls are STILL hoping he becomes that kind of guy, but sadly he seems to have regressed this year.

It didn't make sense to me
either.  I do know that Tyrus was playing guard up until his days at LSU.  I remember reading articles in which he said he would like to play 2 or 3 in the league, and aspired to be like T-Mac.

The reference to T-Mac
came from Tyrus himself.  Self-Proclamation!  He said it on television about a year ago. Something similiar too "I see myself as a "T-MAC" type player with similiar skills down the road".

that's all well and good
but Tyrus calling himself a T-Mac type of player is WAY different than the Bulls calling him that.  I'm sure he's probably the only one who seems himself in that light.

JR Smith became
Aaron Gray and JamesOn Curry.

I may be wrong, but I believe the deal was Smith for two 2nd round picks in 2007 and future cash considerations and Howard Eisley.

Plausible
but even so, TT is young enough to become something still.

or

to be trade bait for a different star forward.  KG would have been awesome, but there are other good post players in the league.  If Tyrus still has the same athleticism and potential, he can still have the same type of value that Paxson wanted.

That's assuming the speculation is correct, which it may not be.  It may be Paxson always liked Tyrus and he's part of the team's long-term plans, which I'd have no problem with.

The big problem is Wallace, his ridiculous contract, his poor attitude, and his utter lack of any offensive game.  If they could somehow jettison him, they'd have some pieces to grow around OR deal.

Smith was dealt for a non-guaranteed contract
The Bulls had too many players at that point and needed to dump someone.  They were able to get 2 2nd round picks and, even more importantly, Eisley's non-guaranteed contract that they could cut w/out cap ramifications.

While you tell a nice story, you have absolutely no evidence to back this up.  Seems like wild speculation to me.

But hey, it really IS a good story.
That's what analysis is all about--looking in the rearview mirror and saying things like "Here's what I think really happened and what I think it all means." Good post, Jesse07.

sadly
they needed that cap money quick-fast to sign Adrian Griffin.

You should lighten up on him, Matt
I mean, it's not just anyone who can be counted on to call players' meetings AND entertain the guys on the bench.

Oh yeah, another thread that
prematurely concludes that Tyrus is incapable of helping the Bulls win a title, this time using the word "chum" in place of "bust" or "raw talent" or "potential" or "lack of understanding."

Tyrus development
(200 games with 25+ minutes in Bulls Offense) <
(200 games with 25+ minutes in Blazers Offense)

I believe if the Bulls kept LMA, he would be in the same situation as Tyrus on the Bulls.  Only a draft-ready NBA player types and strongly confident players will succeed on this team, like Noah.

Noah's fire will not be put out by Wallace, Boylan or Paxson.

clueless performance?
i dont understand the quick hook with Tyrus.  One of the concerns when he was drafted is that he was a "raw" talent.  Once he develops that talent he will become a stud.  The only blame I put on Tyrus is that he is not on the court more often.  When he is on the court it's during garbage time or at the 3 spot.  I know he wants to be considered a 3 but right now his game fits a PF.  We need to be patient and we will not be disapointed, Tyrus and Noah are the future, ditch these loser veterans!!!

Mutually exclusive....
Once he develops & Playing for Chicago Bulls?

When has this happen ever for a Chicago Bulls Big?  I believe you have to come in the door already packing heavy armor to get respect as a Big for the Bulls..

by exult463 on Jan 16, 2008 4:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

correction ..
heavy armor or a heavy contract

by exult463 on Jan 16, 2008 4:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree
I think it's harmful to play Tyrus so much at the 3 right now.  It puts him away from the basket.  I really think that's what's been hindering his performance the past few games...  The only time it was at all effective was that little run with him and Noah and Gray all out at once.

by Jaina on Jan 16, 2008 5:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

also
Im not calling Tyrus worthless.  He could be a very good player.  I do agree with many at this site that it probably won't be with the Bulls because they won't give him consistant minutes.  FYI if I didn't call Wallace worthless in my post either, but he is.

tyrus is a gamechanger
this maybe closer to a conspiracy theory, but I really think he won us more than a couple of games last year, especially at home.

a big tyrus dunk, or better yet a big tyrus block followed by a big tyrus dunk just electrified the crowd at the uc, pumped up his teammates in the game and on the bench, and took momentum away from the other team.

call it intangibles or something else, but i remember just one big tyrus thomas play was all it took to set the tone for a game to be won by the Bulls.
