Bulls think noah is a championship center?

I might be the biggest noah supporter on the site but even I was surprised when i saw this.

cameron, chi: Do you think Joakim Noah will emerge to fill Ben Wallace's shoes in the coming years, or will he always be more of an energy guy off the bench?

SportsNation David Thorpe: I'll quote a Bulls scout, whom I spoke with on Father's Day (before the draft) about whether Noah could fall to #10; "We think he is starting center for a Championship Team good".

Thats pretty high praise for this "energy guy".  im telling you the kid is good. If you liked TT you are going to LOVE noah!

more bulls questions from the same chat
Brent (Indianapolis): Have the Bulls done enough (with the drafting of Noah and signing Smith) to become a team that has a legitimate shot at making the NBA Finals? Thanks.

SportsNation David Thorpe: I think so, yes. But I might be alone with that thought.

and

Jason, PA: David, could you elaborate on the type of jump Luol Deng can make? Will he make the jump to be a "franchise player"?

SportsNation David Thorpe: I think he can get pretty close this year: best scorer, best shooter, best defender, best "teammate", hardest worker.

and

Bazzy (Knoxville, TN): Noah is "starting center for a Championship Team good", huh? Kinda like Rasho or Nazr, both of whom started for the Spurs in '05 and neither is top 10 pick worthy? Or maybe like some of the Bulls' old centers like Cartwright, Perdue or Longley?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Hate on Noah all you want. But despite a severely injured shoulder he helped carry that team to legendary status.

and

William (Fairbanks): I'm curious.. the Piston's handled the Bulls pretty easily. Why do you have the Bulls ahead of them? Joe Smith? I'd take Amir Johnson over Noah any day.

SportsNation David Thorpe: You leave me no choice but to ban you, dude. Amir over Noah? Please be excused back to the basement.

and

Chris, Florida: Super Dave! Have you seen Tyrus Thomas this summer? I'm wondering if you're as impressed by his improvment as the rest of the media seemed to be earlier in the summer.

SportsNation David Thorpe: Saw him in Orlando. Not too impressed with his offensive game, very impressed with his energy and athleticism.

and

Joe, Norfolk VA: Do you see the addition of Noah taking the Bulls to the next level?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Yes, but not just him.

lots of bulls questions today.  I might even have missed a few.  :)

"severely injured shoulder"
calling K.C. Johnson! WTF?

by hscs on Aug 9, 2007 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

*paging K.C. Johnson!
Word was Jo Noah didn't even need to have surgery. I hope Thorpe is just pimping Noah as a tough guy.

Best defender?
On a team with Tyrus Thomas? I guess he said "could become", but I'd put Deng behind Thomas now... and don't envision Deng progressing more than Thomas on that respect.

Anyone agree? Disagree?

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Aug 9, 2007 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Guess it depends on how you define defense
Ty's exciting and great at the stuff that shows up in the boxscore - not sure how you want to compare that with stuff like ball denial, good positioning, not fouling excessively, etc.
"They had me do a psychology test and I asked Coach Skiles if that affected his coaching. He laughed and said, `No way.'" (Joakim Noah)

Deng?
I'd put Deng behind Wallace and Hinrich, too.  Anybody remember what Prince did to Deng a few months ago?...

Tyrus
Is a great defender statistically because people change their attempts from high-percentage layups to mid range jump shots when he patrols the paint.  In that way, without even doing anything, he affects how the other side plays the game.
Get that out of Tyrus' House!!!!

I love reading Thorpe's chats
He spends most of his time on their talking Bulls basketball and hyping up Deng and Thomas, and now Noah.

I like Thorpe, too
probably mostly because he likes the Bulls (like Hollinger and Abbott), but I can remember reading most of his stuff and thinking that he's a level-headed, basketball-savvy guy.  What does everyone else think?  Smart guy or just in love with some of the Bulls' players?

Is Noah working out yet?
Or is he still completely inactive due to the shoulder?

Seeing Noah in action may provide an incentive to attend pre-season games.

I'm pretty sure
Noah will play the preseason

He was never completely inactive
He's been running, and re-habbing the shoulder.  There's been no update on it.  the beat writers really don't work much in the summer, and Sam Smith doesn't work after the draft until the fall.  Unless something big goes down.

by KT on Aug 9, 2007 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have very
high hopes for Joakim. Funny he wasn't impressed with TT from the summer league when TT only played in what 3 games and made first team honors. I guess it's just one man's opinion tho.

by sue369 on Aug 9, 2007 3:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

offense is issue
I think he is just not sold on TT at offense end, he seems to love his activity and athletisism just like most people

I love the Noah love
What will be will be.  Let the games begin.

Thorpe is solid
He knows his stuff.  He was training kevin martin when he first came into the league and he was saying how martin was going to be a player.  Nobody believed him but then martin blows up and thorpe looks like a genius.  He did the same thing with David Lee too.  He knows his basketball and he doesn't mess around with crap like "would a trade of kobe bryant for andrew bogut and bobby simmons work under the cap?"

Noah & the future
First off this slow summer is driving me nuts, I need football & basketball to start.

I love what Paxson has done, and I cannot wait to watch this team next year and for years to come.  Im going on record and say the Bulls will be in the finals next year.  I cannot wait to watch Deng, Tyrus, & Noah on the court at the same time for as an athletic front court on a fast break.

Then, sub Noce for Deng and watch them all fight over lose balls.  Also, Ben won't have to play so many minutes, and he can be more effective.

More Noah
what a loveable scamp:
In the middle of the gym, Noah isn't thinking about photo shoots. He's getting schooled by a 7-year-old one-third Noah's height, in EA Sports' "NBA Live 08."

"Let's see if you can beat me with my own team," Noah says to the kid, who picks the Bulls while Noah picks the Suns.

A crowd of fans and rookies watch in awe as the kid comes back from a 10-point deficit for the win. All Noah can do is complain about the referees.

"What kind of call was that? That's that ref, that's that ref," Noah says, presumably referring to Tim Donaghy.

I can see one benefit to Noah being so gregarious being that the media can swarm to him while Tyrus fumes and scowls by his lonesome. That way everybody wins.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Aug 10, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

the fuming and scowling
didn't get enough attention last season. Sam Smith wasted at least 50 words on retelling the incident involving Thabo Sefolosha, brownie points, and dirty uniforms on the locker room floor (Tyrus doesn't pick them up, what a jerkwad!) in his famous don't disrespect the dunk contest and nerdy reporters like me column.

by hscs on Aug 10, 2007 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I find the scowling admirable
I was being somewhat serious.

If Noah provides the quotes then nobody will care if Tyrus doesn't, and they shouldn't anyway. If Tyrus needs to be jerky to the media as (part of) a  way to motivate himself, then it's fine by me.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Aug 10, 2007 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was reliving the lowest
point in Sam Smithstory. Noah should deflect plenty from the downer duo of Thomas and Wallace. He'll probably repeat a lot Paxskiles rhetoric, but it should be more interesting than Hinrich, Deng, and Gordon repeating Paxskiles rhetoric. I always thought the outwardly dull personalities on the team heavily influenced the opinion that it's boring basketball too.

by hscs on Aug 10, 2007 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thomas not such a bad guy
I interned for a sports television station in which one of my jobs one day was to interview Tyrus at Bulls camp this year.....he really wasn't a bad guy at all.  He just comes off as being young and  his own age (20).  I asked around to reporters who said he wasn't the greatest but there's far worse players out there.  When I needed to get a few soundbites from him he was honest and did his duty and that was it.  I couldn't really complain.

by Othellas Mustache on Aug 10, 2007 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's pretty much my opinion too
Although I've never meet the guy. The age thing was my default Thomas defense.

by hscs on Aug 10, 2007 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In Tyrus' defense
I would say that he has relatively little experience in dealing with the media.  He was not highly recruited out of high school and Big Baby got more attention on that LSU team.  He might always be a little surly, but hopefully as he deals with the media more he will learn to give a better interview.

poop
link
The path is clear for Joakim Noah to play his international basketball for France after the 22-year-old was officially made a French citizen.

Nationalism can be a good thing (WWI is probably a bad example), but this is getting ridiculous. Something catastrophic could happen to the roster during the offseason.

by hscs on Aug 10, 2007 12:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is he a duel citizen then?
Or triple citizen? Love the hyperbole, though.
Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Aug 10, 2007 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No
he's probably a dual citizen, though.

hyperbole is okay
if you compare an ideological cause of WWI to playing for a national basketball team beforehand. If you're going to take all my comments literally I suggest you don't read them at all.

by hscs on Aug 10, 2007 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I said I loved it.
And I acknowledged it was hyperbole. Maybe you should take my comments more literally. It was a compliment, jackass.
Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Aug 10, 2007 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm still waiting
I'd really like a more nuanced definition of the term "duel citizen."  Does this relate specifically to basketball "duels," or just any jingoistic competitive arena?

by jpx7 on Aug 15, 2007 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

crud
Eh, maybe I should just sing my cares away, and reason that they're not going to be in hyberbaric chambers all offseason. Some competitive basketball isn't the worst thing to be doing.

But with Noah and Nocioni, it's the case of (likely) pushing injuries. Hell, France doesn't even need Noah to qualify.

Hell, Steve Nash is playing pick-up
soccer games in Central Park all summer:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/10/sports/basketball/10nash.html

I am sure the Suns love his offseason routine.

He can be...
... a jerk all he wants to the media as long as he stays out of trouble off the court and produces on the court. (I hope he's not a total ass though)

I like his chip-on-the-shoulder approach. I loved watching him stand toe-to-toe with guys like rip hamilton and nate robinson. It's about time we had some attitude on this team. I'm sure Wallace has it too but no one is stupid enough to step up to him.

A guy like Gordon would probably just walk away and say something like, "Well, I let my game do the talking.. I don't need to sink to that level..."
You can talk a little trash, it doesn't hurt.

by Hiryu on Aug 10, 2007 12:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

P.S. Here is a really encouraging
quote from Luol concerning how he wants to expand his game:

"For GB this summer I'm playing the 1, 2 and 3, so I'm really loving the fact that I'm handling the ball so much,'' he says. "Drawing fouls is going to be a big factor, and so is improving my three-point range and playing in the post. I'm great at moving without the ball, but I'm talking about the last five seconds when you get the ball in your hands or you get the ball in an iso -- those kinds of things I have to improve on, because that's what great players do.''

by 1958ChiTown on Aug 10, 2007 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love that quote too
If Deng can master a couple go-to moves when he's iso'd, whether it's off the dribble or posting up....that's huge.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Aug 10, 2007 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

preferably posting up
for a fade away jumper.
