Deng and gordon extensions

I know its early to be talking about extensions.  Well actually one of my questions is what is the time frame for offering Deng and Gordon an extension?

I hope that Gerald Wallace gets no more than 10 million a year and that would set a nice precedent for Deng (they are different types of players but both good defenders with developing strong offensive game).

As for Gordon, I really dont know what will happen. There aren't many other players to compare him to contract wise(his odd combination of size, scoring ability etc..).  If they can't get him to sign an extension for 10 million or under, will the bulls even extend his contract or check out how he progresses and consider resigning him (which is risky with the contract year effect plus I am not sure they'd be under the cap to sign a replacement if needed).  I just hope both gordon and Deng stay with the bulls.  Espescially Deng.  Once his contract gets extended, I am going to buy my first bulls jersey since my Pippen jersey.

Worth asking
Unfortunately, I don't know the answer.  I know that Pax mentioned it today too:
Paxson insists the Bulls have the financial resources to re-sign Nocioni and add an unrestricted free agent. The Bulls own the midlevel salary-cap exception of approximately $5.5 million, as well as the bi-annual veteran's exception of roughly $1.8 million.

"Financially, we're in good shape," Paxson said. "We know we have Luol Deng and Ben Gordon coming up [for extensions], but we're still in good shape even with those guys."

As I recall from Kirk's situation, they have all of next season to discuss if they aren't able to come to terms before then.  That's probably what will happen.

i'm likely mistaken
but i think there is a date in early fall by which contract extensions need to be wrapped up.
w/ his track record, i imagine Pax will sort out the free agents, wait a little bit and then begin w/ Lu.
I would guess that we will be pretty pleased with the contracts we sign.  I'm not sure how Ben could go north of 10 mill (if even approach it).

i beleive the date is the first game of the year
cuz kirk got his contract extended during the seaosn openeer vs miami

So
that was a good day, in more ways than one!

After the
season ended in May Pax said he told BG that they would start working on his extention sometime in August.
I'm excited to see what the rooks can do.

They will sign a one year extension this summer
That is the last part of their rookie deals.  Its more of a formality than anything.  After that they get to negotiate new deals for big money (think kirks deal)

by haze on Jul 3, 2007 8:50 AM CDT reply actions

they already did that
its picking up a team option for the fourth year; they picked up the fourth year for deng, gordon, and krappy early in the year (about the time we were playing portland in december i wanna say)

What they are discussing now is 5th year salary; what kirk will start making this year

by milesgmsu on Jul 3, 2007 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Kirk
got 11 million and I think its safe to say Gordon and Deng will get more.

by LD9 on Jul 3, 2007 8:58 AM CDT reply actions

Deng will
but I doubt Gordon will.
And with the 9th pick the Bulls select...

by bullshooter on Jul 3, 2007 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

kirk
got about 47 for 6 years so he didnt get 11 million a year.  I expect gordon to get at least 8 million, more probably like 10 million, a bit more thank kirk at most.   Deng could fetch up to 11 million in my opinion.

by Sambossanova on Jul 3, 2007 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Hinrich got
$47.5m over five years.  He couldn't have gotten six years because that would have put him under contract for a total of seven and after the CBA changed, the max  you can have a player under contract for is six years.

So that's an average of $9.5m a year and the Bulls would be incredibly lucky to get Deng and Gordon for something that low.

Deng yes
Gordon no.

Kirk's Salary
Hinrich's deal, like Big Ben's, is also one of the rare NBA deals that is actually front loaded.

2007/08 - $11 mil
2008/09 - $10 mil
2009/10 - $9.5 mil
2010/11 - $9 mil
2011/12 - $8 mil

Chalk another one up for Pax.

In Pax we Trust!

Problems ahead
I dont know, maybe i rely on simulations too much. I own Nba live 2005,(i know its old), and when the year came for me to sign both deng and gordon, i couldnt offer gordon the right ammount (actually his agent decided that i had insulted gordon too much and refused to do business with the bulls) and basically ended up losing him for good (on the plus side that year i also ended up drafting a 7'5 monster who was going undrafted, in a two year span he was out powering superstars like garnett and shaq, and have developed a nice jump hook from the post)

All i am saying is what if gordons new manager decides to demand alot of money, i can see the bulls giving gordon a shorter contract than hinrichs, but paying him about the same...so that gordon would be making more money than hinrich in a  year, but the contracts would be for roughly the same ammount. This would make it a bit more flexible for the bulls to pull off trades in the future. Plus it wouldnt insult hinrich.

Deng would probably have a contract that would by year pay as much a gordons, and be for 6 years thus making more money than hinrich and gordon, but also in a way that it wouldnt insulting.

a quick estimationg thingy:

if kirk got 47 for 6 years
expect gordon to get 47 for 4-5 years
expect deng to get 54 for 6 years

while kirks contract keeps his salary going down as the years pass, gordons would probably stay the same for each year, and dengs would probably go up after each year.

This is me just guessing though.

im trying hard to become the next kirk hinrich, therefore im doing nothing more than being the next chris duhon.

Kirk's
was a five year deal not six.
I'm excited to see what the rooks can do.
