New FA signings-Wallace and Darko

Gerald Wallace apparently agreed to a 6 year deal (last year player option) with the bobcats for $57 million. The catch is that there are apparently lots of bonuses (up to 2 million a year). I hope this is the type of deal Deng gets.  I think they are comparable. Here is the link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2933311

In other news, Darko and Memphis have apparently agreed to a contract for an unknown amount, but it is "believed to be for substantially more than the $5.3 million mid-level exception."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2933472

He probably signed for about what Noce signed for.

Good move by both teams
I think the Grizz did a good job getting Darko for a good period of time. Enough time to figure out where his talent level is. Darko is also going to do well as he can sign a mega contract if his effort and production sky rocket there. I believe both parties have a win win give the talent level and the rough money Darko got paid with the length of contract.

As far as Gerald Wallace this was pretty much the standard from the word go signing. This was pretty much well known. The Bobcats have roughtly 48 or 49 million in salary committed so it's interesting to see how they address the dire need of a backup PG.

Michael Jordan is overrated...except for those 6 titles 4 MVP's DPY and other things like Bryon Russell's ankle...

Also
If I was Charlotte I would front load G-Dub's deal making him easier to deal towards the end of his contract.

Good point
on the Deng/Wallace comparison.  It's nice that there is a reasonable offer to compare with for next season.  Hopefully, the Bulls won't have to match the $100+ million the Magic threw away on a 6'10" jump shooter.

I love the way Wallace plays.  Now when he throws his body around though, that's going to be $57 million landing awkwardly on the court.

by MMP on Jul 11, 2007 10:44 PM CDT reply actions

Wallace
i like the way he plays too.  In fact, I think he is  practically as good as lewis, when you take into account everything but scoring.  I think they might be worried that he is vulnerable to injury and thats the reason for the bonus.  I wonder why the bulls dont do that.  Players are probably averse to bonuses like that or performance based bonuses.

Anyways, I imagine that the bulls are extending Deng this off-season not next year and they shouldnt have to pay him more than 10-12 million a year.

by Sambossanova on Jul 12, 2007 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Hope they re-sign Luol him this off-season
As we know, market often dictates contracts and the G. Wallace signing sets a good precedent for negotiations with Luol.

Wallace kind of got screwed, given that he's younger and more effective than Lewis.  Haven't looked at PERs though.  I wonder if Orlando even considered getting Wallace instead.

Also, anyone think that Memphis may have baited Pax into signing Noc so they could grab Darko?

by paxson43 on Jul 12, 2007 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I did think
that maybe more teams were interested in Noc and that was why Pax made his offer so soon. I figured that was Pax's CYA in the event he had to work a sign-and-trade to move Noc.
That's why I thought it was a good move initially, but with no teams really interested, it put a lot of money into a bench/role player which made me disappointed in how it played out.

by kingj41 on Jul 12, 2007 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Darko
will make $21 million for three years. Frankly, I would have rather taken the risk on him instead of signing nocioni 5 years at 7.5.  Darko is nproven but three years is better than 5 and being tall is better than being undersized.  I am not trying to restart the Nocioni debate, but I just wanted to mention that I think its a good deal for the Grizzlies, and it would have been good for the bulls.

by Sambossanova on Jul 12, 2007 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

Problem is
We couldn't really give him that deal without a sign and trade, which would have been difficult without someone to go the other way and match salaries.

by cubbybear on Jul 12, 2007 2:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Or
You would had to renounce Sweetney and Nocioni. Do you see Pax doing that? I'm a kings fan and I know he loves Noc.

Bird rights
We could still have renouced Noc and have been able to resign him to that deal because we have Bird rights on him to go over the cap to sign him. Maybe Pax would have been loucky and Noc would have screwed him, how Boozer screwed his brother after he renouced him to sign a free agent when Boozer and the Cavs had an agreement to re-sign him after they signed said free agent. I forgot who it was, but I think it was Hughes.

by LD9 on Jul 12, 2007 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions

if you renounce rights
you renounce all the rights.  It's the cap holds that put the Bulls over the cap.

thanks for the info
some idiot reporter in Orlando said you could do that and suggested the Magic could have done that with Darko. Still I would take Darko over Noc. Darko would be tradeable unlike Noc.

If the Bulls had worked out an MLE deal
for Noc before hand, they could have renounced PJ and Noc and probably the other deals that were done and signed and then signed Darko for that same amount of money.  They could have turned around and signed Noc for the MLE then.  But the Grizzles probably would have just given that money to Noc.

by bullshooter on Jul 12, 2007 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

nah
they couldn't renounce everyone to get under the cap and then use the MLE later. The exemption is only given if you're over the cap to start free agency.

Sambo..
I understand wanting to take a flyer on Darko given his size, but being tall isn't alway better than being undersized - - just ask Brad Sellers.  There is a chance that Darko truly is a bust, where I think Noc's downside leaves him better than average (I'm trying not to re-open the debate too!). You're right, though, in that 3 years (while at a dumb rate if the $21MM is true) isn't a bad amount of time to figure Darko's upside out.

Good comments on the Wallace contract.  It's amazing how similar his numbers are to Deng's, even though they score (slash v. midrange) and defend (steals v. position) differently. I wish there were more incentive contracts too.

by EdNealy on Jul 12, 2007 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

two things
I just think the bulls could have taken a risk on this one. Although I love Nocioni and I wanted him to be back, I don't think his signing will break or make the bull's chances of making the finals.  That's why I thought they might as well let him go if Darko was going to take three years/7 mil.

Second thing,  please don't refer to be as Sambo.  I dont mean to be politically correct or overly sensitive, but the word isn't exactly what I was thinking when I made the nickname (for a former email account, messenger account and lots of ot her logins).  It's supposed to be a fusion of Samba and Bossanova.  Has nothing to do with the "Sambo" as in the racially charged designation for Black/mixed race ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_%28racial_term%29 )

Sam works well as a short alias even though my name isnt sam.  Anyways, back to talking about gettting scola, getting rid of duhon and summer league.

by Sambossanova on Jul 12, 2007 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Pardon my obliviousness
Hadn't really thought of the name until you pointed it out, but now that you do, I sure did like that book as a little kid!  Tigers into ghee; you don't see that every day.  And back to Scola.

Darko
It seems pretty clear that Darko was not on Pax's radar at all, right?  His market value was uncertain, but Pax could have possibly put something together (sign and trade or whatever).  The reason Pax isn't interested is because Darko is a loser.  I don't throw that word around, but he just doesn't care about winning basketball games.  Watch him play and tell me how on earth he would have fit in with the Bulls.  The man doesn't try.  Sure, he's still young and with the right coach he could bust out of it.  But probably not.  After this contract, I think he'll go back to Europe and lose there.

Paxskiles
Actually prefers effort to talent, and winning to talent, and Darko has neither of the former, and plenty of the talent.
Sounds like a match made in hell.

by cubbybear on Jul 12, 2007 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree
that Darko doesn't care, but I think that Pax wants effort AND talent.  It's what makes the Bulls team so different today; that he's been able to assemble guys that put in what it takes to extract the talent they have. It's also why I think the Bulls will be better this year by only adding a few new pieces.

by EdNealy on Jul 12, 2007 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Sweetney reference?
This has to be wrong right?
Restricted free agent Michael Sweetney has done the same. The Bulls made a $3.7 million qualifying offer to retain his rights, but the veteran center has no role in the master plan.

I love sweetney and if he gets in shap, I might be the happiest to hear that he will be staying with the bulls.  But I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Sweetney was going to be gone next year.

At least we have no danger of the bench flying away with him firmly planted on it.

Where is Antonio Davis these days?
