KG wants to play for Phoenix and Trade Machine fun

According to an ESPN.com story KG has bascially veoted a trade to Boston by refusing to go. The article also says he wants to play for Phoenix. So we now have a sitution in the Association where Kobe wants to go the Bulls, KG wants to go the Suns, LA wants a superstar in return, and Minny needs to get young pieces and cap space to bulid around. So I decided to fire up the trade machine in an attempt to satisfy all four needs in a single transaction and came up with this: Update [2007-6-21 20:43:58 by LD9]:: I'll try to link the trade in the comments.

Star-divide

Now there is a .0005% chance this deal gets done, but let me explain why I feel its a good deal for everybody and why they probably wouldn't do it.

Bulls: They get Kobe, while keeping Deng, Hinrich, and the 9th pick. The 29th pick also helps replace some of the the depth lost. Pax does seem to be reluctant on trading core guys, so I could see him not wanting to pull the trigger on this.

Lakers: Getting Gordon and Marion would be a great haul to get for Kobe. Banks steps into solve the black hole at PG. Honestly I think there the team in this deal that has no doubts about this deal.

Suns: They get out of cap hell. Garnett gives them some rebounding and Griffin gives them a good defensive presence off the bench. They can use the 7th pick on Jeff Green or one of the Wrights to replace Marion. There concern would be does this trade make them that much better to justify them helping to improve the Lakers.

T'Wolves: Diaw and Thomas give them an atheltic front court and Duhon fills their black hole at the point. Kwame, Krayapa, and Marty give them 12 mil of free cap space next summer. Even though there talking about trading KG, I doubt they do because he is that franchise.

Here is the KG trade link:

Yeah, ditto
I'm guessing the Bulls would also let go of Thomas, which makes me sad.

Also-- not to rain on any parades or anything--
but that would be the largest trade in NBA history.

And considering the current trade, that holds the aforementioned record, had the most productive players to be Antoine Walker and Jason Williams, it's really a pretty big stretch that Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Shawn Marion and(and) Ben Gordon would be involved in the deal you propose.

It'd be cool to see such multi-team trade go down, but damn, just too many good players involved I think

I know
but I thought I would have some fun.

by LD9 on Jun 21, 2007 7:46 PM CDT reply actions

Interesting idea.
So afterwards, the Bulls have:

Hinrich/pick 29
Kobe/Rd 2 pick
Deng/Nocioni
PJ Brown/Noah
Wallace/Allen

I'm struggling here.

I don't know. The starting team is awfully good, but it's an very thin team.

Yes, of course.

Nobody wants Diaw's contract,
and the Lakers don't exactly get the Rebuilding Project In A Box that the Bulls have been able to offer the past few years. I don't see how getting Garnett's contract gets a payroll under the luxury tax either.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 21, 2007 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

I don't get the rebuilding in a box comment.
Not sarcastic. Seriously, I don't get to what you're referring.
Yes, of course.

young talent and draft picks + expiring contracts
Which I think are too valuable to trade en masse at the moment anyway (and the expiring Sweetney/Peej deals are expired).

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 21, 2007 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Getting out of
Banks, Diaw, and Marion's contract is what gets them out of cap hell.

by LD9 on Jun 21, 2007 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

The Lakers
dont want to rebuild, by the MSM accounts of this they want a superstar.

Also Thabo in this deal equals Marty in a sign and trade. Picks involved are the Suns getting the 7th pick, the T-wolves getting the 24th pick in this draft, and the Hawks and Bulls 2008 1st rounders.

by LD9 on Jun 21, 2007 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

The Bulls
also get the 29th pick. Its too enmormous of a trade to happen, but it does fulfills all four of the teams needs.

by LD9 on Jun 21, 2007 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think
that Minny gets not much back.  Tyrus, Brown and Thabo are good young players, but none are really anywhere as good as Ricky Davis right now.  They'd conjure up post-Jordan rebuilding.  The type that ruins five years.  Picks aren't likely to be very high, with the other teams involved.  That said, the trade works well otherwise.  Maybe McHale will have the genius to realize that Matt's dead wrong on Duhon.  Haha.  Almost couldn't finishing typing that.

What I meant
by that is I know theirs no way in hell this trade is going to happen. I was just reporting that KG wants to play in Phoenix and I thought I'd come up with a scenerio where he gets traded in a deal with Kobe trading to the Bulls.

by LD9 on Jun 21, 2007 8:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know
I thought it was fun to think about, because it seems that all the teams would benefit for the most part.

I just got a great idea
Why not trade Deng, Thomas, Hinrich, Gordan, and the rest of the bench for KOBE!!!!

Then we would be left with Kobe and Wallace, we would have offense and defense covered.

Then Paxson holds tryouts for the rest of the roster, similar to the way the Matadors do.

But heres the kicker,  WE KEEP THE NINTH PICK!!!!!!!!

Paxson make this trade, it will undeniably help a Bulls team with no future.

Will Phoenix offer them Stoudemire?
If they do, then they're going to get Garnett, because no one else is going to offer Minnesota a player as good as Stoudemire.

by Big D on Jun 21, 2007 11:39 PM CDT reply actions

Why
would Phoenix offer them Stoudmire? He is better than Garnett now and heads and shoulder above him in 3 years, and a decade from now KG will be the color commentator of a game that stoudmire is involved in. The most logical KG trade is one where Minnesota gets the Suns 2008 pick that Atlanta owes them, and the players Ainge was going to send him, and a bad Suns contract (Banks), Boston getting Marion and Phoenix gets KG.

by LD9 on Jun 22, 2007 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

Garnett has been declining
since his MVP season, but it's a stretch to say Amare is a better player. KG had a better PER last season, and plays defense better than Amare ever will.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 22, 2007 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Even
if you think Garnett is better know, it's not going to be that long until Stoudmire is better.

by LD9 on Jun 22, 2007 7:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I realize that,
but only because Garnett is declining. He'd still be a short term upgrade.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jun 22, 2007 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Definitely agree.
And we'll have to see how much Amare really improves as Nash gets holder. He's still playing at a high level, but is that really going to last for more than another 2-3 years? While I dislike the Sports Guy, I agree with him that Phoenix would have a definitely easier time simply swapping Amare (& pieces) for Garnett.

Hell, I would almost EXPECT to see an uptick in Garnett's numbers/production in his first year in Phoenix (after that? eh.) because of Nash and a "refueled" desire to win. I think that would be one instance where that cliche could actually be true.

Yes, of course.

by tyger1147 on Jun 22, 2007 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Marion
Does not want to go to Boston either according to ESPN radio and he also has an opt out clause after the season.

by LD9 on Jun 22, 2007 7:40 AM CDT reply actions

that is a terrible trade
Its not the size of the trade that will prevent it from happening, its the fact that you're assuming the GMs for the Lakers and Timberwolves are in fact the computer A.I. GMs from NBA 2k1.

No offense, but the Lakers and Timberwolves get absolutely fleeced in that deal. I know Kupchek and McHale aren't great GMs, but I don't think they're that dumb.

Here's a hint: if the Bulls get Kobe Bryant and also get to keep Deng, Hinrich, and the 9th pick, someone is getting screwed.

Another hint: if the Wolves are giving up Garnett AND the 7th pick and they're not getting back Dwayne Wade or LeBron James, but a bunch of junk, its not happening.

by matthewcc on Jun 22, 2007 9:39 AM CDT reply actions

Well
  1. I have said this deal will not happen
  2. Can you please explain to me how exactly getting Marion and Gordon equals the Lakers getting hosed.
  3. The T'wolves in this deal deal are trading the 7th pick this year to get 3 1st rounders (24 this year, the Hawks pick in 2008 (probably in the mid teens and the Bulls pick in 2008 (probably in the 27-30 range) They get a hell of alot of cap room next summer with Brown, Duhon, Krayapa, and Marty. They also get their forwards for the next decade in Diaw and Tyrus. McHale has waited so long to trade KG that he is going to get screwed. Atleast in this deal come 08 they have a solid core in place.

by LD9 on Jun 22, 2007 10:14 AM CDT reply actions

sure
  1. I agree
  2. I'm not sure what needs explaining: Marion + Gordon does not equal Kobe Bryant. It doesn't even come close. The Lakers with Gordon and Marion in Kobe's place would be a lotto team in the West, and one not in an any better position with the cap. Plus, there's no draw for frontrunning Laker fans and their finacial situation would tank. Marion and Gordon are good players, but they're not superstars and they're not bringing in crowds.
  3. Its not enough. Garnett and the 7th for future cap relief and some late first round picks? Garnett can opt out next summer for cap relief without having to give up the 7th pick in a superstar draft class.
The Lakers, Suns, and Timberwolves all have better options, and in each case the other teams would be better off doing nothing than doing this trade.  What is far more likely is the Bulls get bypassed altogether:

Garnet to the Suns, Marion + peices to the Lakers, Bynum + Brown + all the picks the Suns and Lakers can muster to the Timberwolves. All three teams are better off than they'd be by involving the Bulls.

Look, 50% of Bulls fans polled on this site think the Bulls come out ahead in the deal. Don't you think that's pretty good evidence the deal is heavily skewed in Chicago's favor?

by matthewcc on Jun 22, 2007 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

It would
be interesting to see how Marion does without a superstar PG such as Nash.
