Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

PLAYOFF Game Thread: Bulls vs. Pistons Game 2

Yo, guys, play better?

The team (and willing media) have already burned up the 'energy' excuse...which is a lame cop-out to begin with.

Just start with the guards playing well and staying on the floor. Less time for the bench is a good thing, although you'd think they'll perform better than in game one when called upon.

I may stop by the thread and drop some angry thoughts. Or happy thoughts, gotta think positive. I'm sorry, this is my first time blogging in the second round of the playoffs so excuse me if I write like a scared rookie.

Maybe I'll watch this game
Fell asleep (exhaustion from a horrible week at work) and didn't see a minute of Saturday's game.  That was a blessing.

It's harder to watch games on TV emotionally, at least for me.  Although if it's a bad game, I can just turn on Dancing with the Stars.

You're lucky
you missed Sat. game. They will play better tonight. Hopefully a win is in the Bulls future tonight.

I'm recording DWTS and will watchi it tomorrow.

Be sure and tune in after the game tonight for our telethon to raise money for a new home for Boney.

Yep, I completely tuned out the 4th Qtr Saturday
Found things around the house that needed doing instead.

I just couldn't take it anymore - that's usually the point where I turn on the Cubs instead (which can have its own risks), but since baseball was done for the day I had nowhere to turn but the dishwasher.

Where the Bulls are concerned, seems I'm up before every game.  So here's to hoping the guys live up to my optimistic hopes for the evening.

I'm also really interested to see how the Jazz-Warriors series starts out.  Should be a good night of basketball!

Wallace has been terrible
does he have a rebound yet? The Bulls have given up several on the offensive glass already, that can't happen. One-legged Webber is carving them up.

Unfortunately Skiles one trick is to 'go small' when they actually need to go bigger and control the glass.

Sweetney? come on Skiles, why do you hate the rookies.

I blame Wallace for this quarter though, he's been chasing around the perimeter and nobody's back to guard the paint.

by SouthSideIrish @ Blog a Bull on May 7, 2007 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

Not really much to say
Detroit's been so much better so far in this series that's it's almost hard to get upset about it.  It's not just that the Bulls have played badly (although they obviously have) - Detroit really looks good, and even if the Bulls play much better it may not be enough.

by Big D on May 7, 2007 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

This is embarrassing
Honestly, if we're going to get our asses kicked like this we might as well play the rookies.  Not that they're going to be the difference or anything like that, because this series has been so one-sided do far, but at least they'll get some playoff experience.

by Big D on May 7, 2007 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

by daaaabulls on May 7, 2007 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

He can . . .
But the problem is that he's not athletic enough to stay in front of people anymore.  Of course, when you're losing by 24 points in the second quarter you probably shouldn't worry about foul trouble anyways.

Plays
I don't care that he made a shot, but I have a big problem with the game plan being to go inside to Sweetney repeatedly instead of trying their hardest to get Gordon going. They need him to get into a rhythm and they've got to help him get there.

by nas on May 7, 2007 7:37 PM CDT reply actions

What a fucking disgusting first quarter.
Just about every player in a Bulls uniform should be ashamed.

How did we regress into this quivering pile of dung?

Detroit is not this good, but we are trying our best to make them look like the 96 Jordan team.

Nocioni - Pathetic defense, no accurate shooting

PJ - Foul trouble

Hinrich - Invisible on offense; keeps getting beat on fucking curls.

Gordon - Invisible on offense, no accurate shooting

Deng - Invisible on offense

Wallace - No rebounding presence; no defensive presence

Thabo - Nothing terrible

Tyrus - Decent rebounding, stupid fucking foul at the end and you can't leave Sheed open for three, but OK

Sweets - I don't know what to say.

Five quarters and we haven't even been competitive yet.

Just shameful so far.

Wallace and PJ cannot give up offensive rebounds. The Pistons use their posessions too well to give them extra ones.

Bullshooter is right.  As bad as Duhon has been, he wouldn't be out there nearly as much as he has been if Hinrich and Gordon were doing anything.  Billups is abusing whoever they put on him.

Hopefully Pax can trade him this summer, because as long as he's here Skiles is obviously going to insist on playing him.  I'm just saying that our problem go a lot deeper than Duhon - nobody on the Bulls is doing a thing.

I am trying to stay positive
I know we can come back, but we just look so lifeless out there. I mean Detroit is who we thought they were... a good effing basketball team! We have to play better with this. We are acting like it isn't a big deal. I mean this is huge, we need to take this game.
Yo Skiles! More Tyrus and Thabo please!

by SouthSideIrish @ Blog a Bull on May 7, 2007 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

IMO, Bulls are not losing this game because of
defense and rebounding. Neither have been great, but that is not why Bulls are losing.

Bulls have 43 damn points in the first half.

Bulls had 69 points in game one.

I don't mean to be obvious, but we can't score. At all.

That's due to several things.

(a) We are shooting for sh*t from the perimeter;

(b) As a result, Detroit can just stay in that zone. In the zone, they switch on every screen, which prevents penetration. If the guard gets around the perimeter defender, Rasheed (or whoever is the off big man - e.g Dale Davis) steps up or out to the wings to trap (BTW, this is why BWall has so many points, when Sheed steps up to trap, it leaves Ben open for dunks under the basket if the rotation is slow). Until we hit shots or attack the middle of the zone, Detroit will stay in it;

(c) Gordon and Hinrich and playing like dogsh*t. Neither is getting to the rim. Gordon took himself out of the game with two moronic fouls. Our guards are being dominated again;

If we don't score more in the half court, we can't win.

by 1958ChiTown on May 7, 2007 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

I still think if they boarded better
they could run a bit more and wouldn't have to score in the half court.

getting 43 isn't that bad for a half, in what I assume is relatively low-posession half since the pistons are involved (too lazy to add it up)

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions

but on another point you made
if Gordon and Hinrich do nothing none of Skiles' rookie-hate really matters.

BUT I do think if Skiles used his bench better (or if the bench players didn't play awful) they'd keep things closer.

Why did PJ Brown play under 2 minutes?

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

As usual, you're half right and half wrong
Offensive boards and second chance points by Detroit are killing us.  86 points for a playoff game is fine.

Although I do like the clean-shaven look for him, he can remind (other) teams that even though he plays like an old man he is actually young still.

But the beard meant more heart, so I'm conflicted.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I was actually just ribbing him for
declaring that offensive rebounds are killing us with no analysis.

They have seven, Bulls have four. 7 is bad, but not terrible. Skiles usually says that he can live with 12, so we are a little over that pace, but not horrendous.

I can't find a damn stat with second chance points.

by 1958ChiTown on May 7, 2007 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

yeabut
the Bulls outrebounded Detroit when they played over the season, they can't merely be close in that department they should win it.

Bulls did force 8 Detroit TOs though.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions

hello
7 is a ton considering they are shooting 55%.  They aren't missing that many to get that many O rebounds.

by bullshooter on May 7, 2007 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's my simplified in-game analysis
Lead was built in the first, when Detroit took 6 more shots (and mage 8 more baskets) than the Bulls got off, and that makes a gigantic difference with how hot their shooting has been.  TOs are even, so those 7 offensive boards are a huge part of the disparity in number of shots.

Even shooting well, if Pistons take the same number of shots as Bulls the lead is basically cut in half.

It was a 16 point game after the first, and it's only a 17 point game now - they've kept the score roughly equal the last quarter and a half.  Give them some credit for that, especially on a night when the shooting is so bad and they're playing from a huge deficit.

it was almost getting meaningful there.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

the only thing that gets me really discouraged
is Gordon's performance thus far. It's really bothering me after I had him turning the corner last series. I was perhaps blinded by the lame old Heat defense.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

For
the life of me, I don't understand why he's not shooting. He keeps pump faking and passing up possible shots. He needs to shoot himself back in the game.

Meanwhile, until the last minute, I completely forgot Deng was even there.

ONE thing to ease the pain would be to not have to listen to Doug Collins again next game...

Word
I am not someone who usually bitches about the announcers, but god, Collins is hard to take.

I was hoping to see Thomas chuck a three.  But if it hits the rim it should just count.

I wonder how Big Ben feels....
watching his old team KICK his ass two games in a row, and knowing his current team seams to have already headed for the goldf course...

Maybe I am naive.
But it isn't over.

We haven't played at home yet.

by 1958ChiTown on May 7, 2007 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

very true
but you have to admit there needs to be massive, tit rocking improvement for them to stay in a game.

by mike bornemann @ Blog a Bull on May 7, 2007 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

it's not.
who knows what's gonna happen. anything can happen. let's hope the bulls can hit their jump shots and skiles can think up a better game plan, like attacking the basket and drawing fouls early..

by Dr0ne420 on May 7, 2007 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

and start thomas

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 7, 2007 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd be shocked
if Skiles changed the lineup for the first game at the UC, not that I don't think there should be some changes.

by bullshooter on May 7, 2007 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

two big defecit playoff losses
could key a lineup shift. I hope to chgobr's Ch-st that it isn't benching Gordon.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 7, 2007 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

He'd have to be on the list
but I don't think Skiles would do that to him in game 3.  Game 4 is a whole other story.

you NEVER saw that from MJ...even in his worst and lowest moments...

These guys just seem to have lost all their desire...

I'm not chitown
so I don't know what BG is thinking, but it sure didn't look like "Wow, this is really bugging me how bad we (I) are playing."

by bullshooter on May 7, 2007 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Utah came back
from 0-2, so the Bulls aren't quite done yet. If they can somehow forget these 2 games and simply play their game, they can tie the series. However, this takes mental toughness, something they don't really have right now. Game 3 is the key.

by vlad001 on May 7, 2007 9:46 PM CDT reply actions

yeah...and my mental sanity is fading...

Two 20+ point losses. Wow.
I realize the BUlls did many things wrong. I realize the rebounding was terrible, Bullshooter. I realize Noce played another shitty game.

But in the end, I just can't get around how poorly the guards played. Gordon was horrendous again. Hinrich was criminally bad. That's supposed to be the STRENGTH of our team.

Oh, well. Beer and screaming and hope on Thursday night in the UC.

by 1958ChiTown on May 7, 2007 9:48 PM CDT reply actions

that's the main issue
Gordon/Deng/Hinrich are getting clowned by Billups/Rip/Prince. And you'd hope only Billups would have the clear edge.

I have a feeling
GS isn't going to have the same kind of performance against Utah.

by bullshooter on May 7, 2007 9:57 PM CDT up reply actions

sigh...
How depressing. Time to go tell reporters that it's not a series until a home team loses. The Bulls' mentality should be "they preserved home, let's just go win our home games." Last year, the Bulls won games 3 and 4 at home against Miami, so they should just focus on that.

But in reality the best we can hope for is a competitive series. Beating the Pistons four out of five just isn't going to happen.

by jai on May 7, 2007 9:57 PM CDT reply actions

heh
I agree, call up Zo for the correct postgame comments in this situation.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

From a purely fan perspective, these two games
have been really depressing.

I am somewhat disheartened.

The team I just watched on TV did not even resemble the team I saw all year long.

Are we just an irksome regular season team, as one blogger suggested? Are we simply outmatched when good teams turn up the playoff intensity? Are the Bulls the little engine that could, a team which tries hard but gets knocked off of its rails far before it ever reaches the summit?

What, if anything, do these games suggest about the long term potential of our team? Can this team win a championship with its current core (however you may define that)? Or are the guards too short, the team too unathletic?

I am not shocked by losing, but I am absolutely shocked by the failure to make the games competitive.

I really don't know the answer to the questions I posed. I guess the next two games will tell the tale, in some ways.

Come on Bulls, get back in this series.

by 1958ChiTown on May 7, 2007 10:07 PM CDT reply actions

these are legit questions
I guess the big one is not are they outmatched but by how much?

If they make it a series maybe the braintrust can convince themselves that even if they just gave the core guys another year and moved up Tyrus/Thabo and punted Noc/Duhon (blammo, you're more athletic now) they can take on the Pistons in a series.

of course all the while they'll still search for a low-post threat.

I doubt even two more destructions will cause them to deal Gordon or Hinrich but the doubt will creep in, for sure.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 7, 2007 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions

You raised the critical questions.
I feel very similar to you.  These two games have surprised me by the Bulls inability to compete with Detroit.  Detroit appears to be playing at a different level.  Yet, the Bulls looked great in the Miami series.  Now I question if we played a Miami team that was severely flawed and was a perfect storm for us to sweep.  Depressing is my word for the morning.

by chgobr on May 8, 2007 6:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Big problem here
Hinrich is Skiles boy. Gordon is all our scoring.
