Ty Thomas/ Amare Stoudemire?

(Matt if you need to move this, I apologize ahead of time)

Does anyone else see a strong resemblance between Ty Thomas and Amare Stoudemire? Obviously not as polished yet, but he looked great last night...again. And as I watched the game last night, I kept thinking to myself, 'Where have I seen this before?'

Well
They're both tall and African-American.  And play basketball.  Is it me, or do they both have funny noses?

Hmm
Amare is good at offense and tyrus isnt.
Tyrus is good at defense and amare isnt.

Thats a simplification.

by Sambossanova on May 16, 2007 11:38 AM CDT reply actions

what?
defense isnt all about blocking shots.  Watch kurt thomas play duncan and then watch stoudemire and tell me that amare is good at defense.

by Sambossanova on May 16, 2007 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

that may be true
However, Ty can play offense.

Um, duh?

I'm not sure why you're arguing with anyone about this considering you didn't lay out any specific reasons that make you feel Thomas is comparable to Amare.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 16, 2007 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Reasons?
Isn't it obvious Mr. Basketball IQ?

Yes, pretty obvious.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 17, 2007 8:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Pax
do you not see it? I will start with his frame. Then I will move on to his explosiveness. Next, I will look at ability to run the floor. Then I will look at his hands and ability to catch alleys or entry passes. Next, I will look at shot blocking ability. Then offensive rebounding/defensive rebounding. QUESTIONS?

Why even bother taking the time to type a rather ridiculous premise, tell other people they're wrong, and not articulate a single reason why you feel this way?

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 17, 2007 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I would say obviously not...
...since he said "no." Something 'obvious' wouldn't really need debating. The fact you asked if anyone else agrees (and you asked yourself "Where have I seen this before?") seems pretty obvious that it wasn't obvious.

When Amare was a rookie
he would make spectacular dunks and blocks like TT as well as mental mistakes. I hope TT becomes as good as Amare.

by chgobr on May 16, 2007 12:23 PM CDT reply actions

I'll dump this here
David Thorpe on Tyrus:
Joe, Chicago: True or False: Tyrus Thomas will become a star in this league.

SportsNation David Thorpe: True!!

jake (chicago): Why doesn't Ty Thomas play more? I mean who wants a guy that blocks shots and dunks 5 times a quarter playing anyways....

SportsNation David Thorpe: That's a fair question that I don't have an answer to.

Alex (St. Louis): David, if you were a GM and were given the choice between taking Tyrus Thomas/Thabo Sefolosha or Brandon Roy/Lamarcus Aldridge, which duo would you choose?

SportsNation David Thorpe: I'd give the slighest of edges to the Blazer duo.

B-Kune (NYC): If Tyrus Thomas develops the jump hook he showed last night, do you think he can be a legitimate post player (offensively and defensively)?

SportsNation David Thorpe: He does not need that to be legit. But it would not hurt.

Tyrus (Chicago): Coach says I miss my defensive asignments and I take dumb 16 foot jump shots.

SportsNation David Thorpe: Everyone makes mistakes, and at playoff time coaches do tend to shorten rotations. TT is doing fine-and the Bulls still have a pulse.

John, NY: Would you agree that Balkman is as good as Thomas. Isiah is a good drafter, no doubt.

SportsNation David Thorpe: Maybe now, but TT has a better upside.

John (W. Va.): When Tyrus Thomas reaches his potential, what player do you think he'll most closely resemble? Camby?

SportsNation David Thorpe: No. And I'm not his trainer for those that think I am.

Chris (LA): Will Tyrus Thomas still be compared to Stromile Swift when it's all said and done?

SportsNation David Thorpe: His heartbeat is twice that of Swift.

John (W. Va.): You never came close to answering my question - What player will Tyrus Thomas most closely resemble when he reaches his potential?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Dude, how many guys have his size, athleticism, energy, and toughness? I don't know who he will be like, and I don't care. I do know that if he reaches his full potential, he'll be an all-star.

Joe (Davis): That makes 7 Ty Thomas questions. I'm just sayin'.

SportsNation David Thorpe: That's because almost every other question-over 1,000 of them, are about the Phoenix suspensions.

Ha!
I wish the Thomas-Should-Do-What-I-Think people here had a similar attitude earlier this season.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on May 16, 2007 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Ty's fate as a basketball player
will depend entirely on how hard he works in the offseason during his first three or four years. If he is a Luol Deng, the Bulls might have something special. If he is an Eddy Curry, he'll just be a fleeting athletic spectacle.

Tyrus seems to have a real chip on his shoulder, which I love, so I am hoping his defiance drives him to excel and work hard.

by 1958ChiTown on May 16, 2007 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the great thing about having Deng
the other guys feel inclined to try and match his work ethic.
FEAR THE ROOKIES!

by bullshooter on May 16, 2007 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

as Bulls praise overseer
I think that includes Gordon too. I thought it was interesting that in one of the many vignettes on Luol this season Pax was interviewed and he said (paraphrasing) when he saw players arriving early to the Berto Center his first thought was that if it wasn't Gordon it must be Luol.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on May 16, 2007 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Luol over Ben...
It's funny how Deng always gets mentioned ahead of Gordon as someone with a strong work ethic. I'm pretty sure Gordon works out as hard as anyone...
History does NOT have to repeat itself. Um... Go BULLS!!!

by tyger1147 on May 16, 2007 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

there was a BG interview
IIRC, where Ben said he lived close enough to the Berto center to see Luol pulling in every morning for shooting practice and saying to himself that he'd better get there too.

Can we expect 30 min. a night from Ty now?
"Mr. CAPS"

by Knowledge32 on May 16, 2007 12:52 PM CDT reply actions

I doubt Ty will play 30 minutes.
I believe he only played that many minutes once (Cleveland).

I would suspect he'll get 20 minutes or so. Pure guess.

by 1958ChiTown on May 16, 2007 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm holding my breath
Every time I think Skiles has turned a corner with playing the rooks, the next game they hardly play.

by Scotter on May 16, 2007 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Think about this a lot.
My view is TT already has the body of an allstar, but the undeveloped offense of a junior in college. Duh.

Looking at Stoudemire's rookie stats, Stoudemire was far above TT's rookie year- statistically. Then again, TT can already do things that I've never seen AStoudemire do.

Q: Will the bulls be greatER next year?  Answer: Will TT be greater?

I love watching TT because he acts like every moment is his first and last moment. Like his body is a ticking bomb, and its the first and last tick. The guy is just pure basketball. Nothing ever against Thabo.

by chicago-homesick-blues on May 16, 2007 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

The Bulls
WILL be better next year. And Ty's potential is exciting. If he develops a mid range J (at the elbow) then I don't know who can guard him.

No team can stop Tyrus Thomas. They can only get out of the way, or duck 3 inches and let him fly over.

Jumper or post move?
Assuming that Tyrus can really develop one or the other, would you perfer a midrange jumper or a dependable post move?

I say post move.

by paxson43 on May 16, 2007 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Jumper over the post move in a heartbeat
If he can hit the jumper, he can face up and drive.

by Scotter on May 16, 2007 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

BUT
WE NEED A LOW POST SCORER...jk.  I really think deng is gonna develop a low post game before tyrus does.   Although it be nice if they both do.  Maybe they can put some incentive in deng's contract extension like an extra million if u score at least 6 points a game from the post.

by Sambossanova on May 17, 2007 1:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Objectively

As a Bulls fan I love TT, but Amare is a beast. I would take Amare over him in a heratbeat.
