PLAYOFF Game Thread: Bulls vs. Pistons Game 3

Just show me something, Bulls. There's only so many ways to post 'gawd damn they stink'.

The margins of defeat have been so bad that home court alone won't make up for it. They have to play a LOT better as a team, and if the core guys don't play well it won't really matter what Skiles does in panic mode after an early deficit.

I don't believe much in a game changing the 'momentum' of a series, so winning tonight may not mean much. But it's far better than the alternative.

I have
no idea what to think of tonights game. Hopefully they come out ready to play in the first ten minutes.

They just said that Ben W. just arrived at the UC at 6:45. He's an hour and a half late by league standards. What the hell is up with that?

GO BULLS!!!

If the Bulls lose this game tonight it won't be the end of the world but you'll be able to see it from here.

Remember
The last time Ben acted out, the team pulled itself out of a losing streak because the drama "focused" the team (or so Ben says).

Then I
hope they get the same results.

As if tonight's not stressful enough
we get Stephen A. in the pre-game?

Although listening to Zo try to explain how Miami got swept by the team that is getting swept almost makes up for that!

Anything is better than Jon Barry. Walton has his moments, and most them are awful and annoying, but there's a good blasting of a player every once in a while.

The good thing
is that Chicago can still play a lot better than they did, at least offensively. Their timing and passing continues to be off, but at least they're getting there. Bulls have to keep up the energy for a Detroit run.

Gordon was key to getting that energy going. Once he started, Deng and Kirk finally started hitting after sluggish starts.

Don't pick on Kirk too much for this one.
He was shooting pretty well until those desparation shots at the end of the 4th, and still hit 6/15 - yeah, it would be nice if he'd hit a few more, but he also had 7 assists and 11 rebounds tonight while playing 47 minutes of guarding Billups and Hamilton.  He's had a rough postseason, but we know he's had great postseasons in the past.

Yeah, everyone always wants to be the
exception, but as we all know by now from all the talking heads, most teams have taken several years to get to the top.  Bulls lost to the eventual champs last year, this year won in the first round and are down to what could be the eventual champs in a series where they have a tough match-up at pretty much every position.

What I hate is people talking about totally blowing up the team - I don't want to be a rent-a-champ team (hello, Miami) where we (the fans) know hardly anyone and it's basically a year on top then crashing.  I know people are tired of talking about potential, but people also spend a lot of time talking about how the Bulls "gave up" on players who have been traded too soon.  The guys play hard, and I think they deserve our support for getting to where they've gotten.

I'm sure there will be some tweaks to the team, but I for one will be quite sad if anything major happens.  They were better this year than last, and I have faith in Pax, Skiles, and the hard-working guys on the team that they's be even better next year.  Maybe I'm crazy - I have been known to wait outside in the rain in the middle of the night to welcome back a team coming home off a season-ending loss.

So I apologize for being long winded.  This series has been frustrating for everyone, and part of my personal frustration is reading fans and the media slamming on the team in a way that to me seems unwarranted.

by Bluelou on May 10, 2007 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Good Rotation
I was happy with Skiles rotation tonight.  No going deep into the bench.  Nocioni is just off and never got back on track after his injury.

The reason Thabo and Tyrus dont play more is because they arent better than the people who are on the floor.  Its not like thabo was gonna go in there and get a quick 20 points in a quarter or something.

The main guys have to step up and tyrus and thabo arent the main guys.

by Sambossanova on May 10, 2007 10:44 PM CDT reply actions

Let me sum up
Skiles blew it tonight.  All year long this Bulls team has played 8-10 guys who knew that they had to play hard and keep the pressure on their opponents.  There is not one single guy on the roster who is consistently dominant at his position.  The Bulls won games because they wore their opponents down with constant pressure applied by a solid rotation of 8-10 guys.

In the first half tonight, Skiles played 8 guys who eventually wore down the Pistons and built a sizable lead.  In the second half, he put one guy (Noc, who has played poorly so far this series) in for 5 minutes.  Now maybe Hinrich can chase Hamilton for 10 minutes at a time, but he's going to need a blow, not moving right over to guard the Pistons best player, Billups.  And even if you think Hinrich, Gordon, and Deng are the "core" and should be in there the whole game, how can you play 37 year-old PJ for 38 minutes?  There's no way these guys can continue to put on the pressure that they need to to disrupt the Pistons on either end, and it was evident on the offensive end in the second half.

Say what you want about any of the Bulls performance, but Skiles is the guy who put them in that position.

by bullshooter on May 10, 2007 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

Skiles is the guy who put them in that position

It's an ugly scene in here.

I can't leave. Too hard to admit that the game went as it did.

I guess this is how it all ends, with a blown 18 point lead.

What did we shoot in the 4th quarter? 15 percent, if that? It was 19 percent when I glanced at the scoreboard with three to go.

Can't win if you can't score.

No real analysis now, just disappointment. Saw 34 games this year, and I can't believe Sunday will be the last.

rooting for the Bulls
because the Cavs have a better chance of going to the Finals
Man, is it too much for just one of you to say "Detroit earned 1 of their last 3 wins over the Bulls". All I ask is 1 of you.

What a fucking collapse
I don't know what to say about the lineup that hasn't already been said.  Skiles hasn't hesitated to use the bench all year (in fact he's used it TOO much), and now, in the biggest game of the year, he plays only 6 players in the second half?  While the starters are blowing a 19 point lead?  Hinrich and Gordon are good players, but they're only human - they can't play the entire second half without getting tired at the end.  I thought PJ played pretty well tonight, but he happens to be approximately 80 years old - there's a reason he doesn't play 38 minutes all the time.

And it figures that the one backup Skiles does play in the second half is Nocioni, who shouldn't even be out there at this point.  If his shot isn't falling, he's pretty much worthless, and it wasn't falling tonight.  The Pistons had no reason at all to win tonight; they were terrible for most of the game.  Hell, even after blowing a 19 point lead, the game was still right there for the Bulls - but they couldn't take advantage, because all their starters were tired from playing the entire second half.  It's dumb fucking coaching, and that's why Sunday will probably be the last home game of the season.

New post is up
MiSo Angry.

keep in mind I'm not saying the team should be blown up, but it shouldn't NOT be blown up just because they're young. If that makes sense.
