Game thread #LAST: Bulls at New Jersey Nets

Matt:

I've said this before: watching the Bulls play in New Jersey just plain sucks.

The 10 game losing streak in that building doesn't help. The Nets team is boring, the stadium is usually half-empty and depressing-looking. The fact that it's a road game makes it non-HD picture (not to mention the sound quality) which always makes the viewing experience crap.

But wait, tonight's game is on ESPN? For some reason that makes me feel less nervous. The place should be somewhat energized, the Nets need this game nearly as much as the Bulls to guarantee them a more favorable matchup.

Cavs beat reporter Brian Windhorst relays the idea that this is the most important game of the post-dynasty Bulls. He acknowledges that game 5 in Miami (who are rooting for the Bulls, btw) last season may be a bit more important, but this is definitely a biggie.

Just win.

More on the seeing implications below, from Chalkwhite.

Star-divide

Chalkwhite:

I don't know if I need special permission to make a game thread, but I figure it's about time to have one for the most important game of the regular season.

We all know what's at stake: Win and we get a ride to the ECF without facing Miami, Detroit or Cleveland. Lose and we (might) end up facing Miami first, followed by Detroit. They really need to fix the seeding in this stupid league.

But the Nets are playing for keeps too. They could, with a loss, drop all the way to the 8 seed and get swept by Detroit. And,as I was reminded of recently by some columnist, Jason Kidd DESPISES Skiles from their Phoenix days, and will be doing whatever he can (which is quite a bit) to spoil the Bulls day.

So everybody get out their lucky socks, Hinrich jerseys, and assorted superstitious items.

We HAVE to win this game.

My humble
apolgies, PaxJax. I'm new here, and I've seen previews written as diaries before.

by Chalkwhite on Apr 18, 2007 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't mind
and in fact I'm encouraged after some games a month ago where I asked for a preview and got nothing.

Truth be told, early starts like tonight make it harder for me to get up a quality preview in time anyway.

Or what I can do is just put my thoughts on top.

Either way it's probably better for a huge game like this that the thread is up early so the comments can flow.

Why is no one afraid of the Raptors?
Am I crazy or are the Raptors underrated?  Okay, yes, I am crazy.  But the question stands, do the Bulls have anything to fear from the Raps?

by GWKD on Apr 18, 2007 3:30 PM CDT reply actions

I'm sure Raps fans are pissed about all this
clear path to the finals talk.  As for me, I'm just not looking at the second round yet really.  It's hard to know how Toronto is going to respond when most of the players have little to no playoff experience.

all of the granville waters running around this site.

by bullshooter on Apr 18, 2007 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

2 reasons
  1. They're all pretty new to the playoffs
  2. Bulls have won I think 12 outta their last 14 meetings. I know those older teams were not the same team but it kinda make ya feel safe against them.
AIM screen name : Option27

by Option27 on Apr 18, 2007 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

that doesn't mean much
Because I think the Raps have beat the Bulls in their last two meetings.   (And yes, you can argue x, y, z about those losses, bad calls in the first one and wallace was out in the second)

Also, the Raps had a pretty slow start to the season, just like the Bulls----and for similar reasons too, they were integrating a lot of new players.

GWKD

by GWKD on Apr 18, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

It's relative
I think most think that Raps would be easier relative to Heat/Pistons/Cavs, but they'd be a fiesty challenge to the Bulls.  Since they lack experience and a superstar (Bosh is borderline) I have confidence that the Bulls would beat them in a seven game series.

for the record
I don't actually believe it.  (The only referee that I'm truly suspicious of is Bennet Salvatore. ; ) )

Stern is just as likely to want a name brand first round matchup anyway---it would be a good kickoff to the playoffs if Wade is actually healthy.

I also believe
this is the biggest game of the core's careers.

Earlier in ESPN's chat this morning, I presented the question to David Thorpe.

Chris (LA): One would argue that tonight's Bulls game is the biggest game of the core's career. Agree?

SportsNation David Thorpe: Game 5 in Miami was huge.

Although I do agree that the Miami game was insanely important, I just see this game as the most defining moment in the core's best season together.

This is it. The big one. The epicenter.
Hard to believe its here already. Game one of a one game playoff series, call it the 0th round if you will.

First round exit or seventh Finals. Kidd's triple double or two fouls in two minutes. Carter scores sixty or sixteen. Gordon takes the lead to thrity or Gordon misses at the buzzer. Hinrich in foul trouble or Hinrich with 12 assists. Thomas posterizes Nets or Carter posterizes Bulls. Everything is up in the air and in dissaray. Biggest Bulls game in ten years.

The only question is, will they show up?

This is basically a playoff game

Run off all Bulls misses.

In the half court, give it to Hamilton and Carter in the post and let them lower their shoulder against the smaller Bulls guards. Hope to draw fouls if you can't get to the rim.

Also, Boki was leaning in and turned. If he stood up straight and taken it in the chest the call is made.

For once I agreed with Walton, that play was an example of lame flop-based defense. A crime against humanity! (his words, of course).

box score perusing...
I don't know how Wallace had 7 rebounds. he seemed invisible.

Only 15 minutes though. Deng with only 4. They need huge 2nd halfs, this deficit is on them. (Hinrich's 3TOs don't help)

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 18, 2007 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

Deficit
The deficit is really on the lack of ball movement, I think. Few people are moving without the ball, and it seems like the person who touches it shoots it.

balls...so much momentum was gained when mikki moore hit the first shot. if it was carter or kidd or kristic or ANYBODY....but the nets wanted mikki to hit it, taking all of the weeks momentum from the bulls by letting their kryptonite take it

Just for the record, Noce was the leading scorer

He had 19 points on 60% shooting.

I'd say we lost because Gordon played like

I'm not sure what that has to do with Noce playing well. The loss isn't on him. It's ridiculous to try to claim it is.

Loss
I'm more upset by the way they lost instead of the fact they lost. It was a combination of poor effort on the part of very important players (Deng, esp. Hinrich, and it seemed like Gordon barely touched the ball) and poor coaching down the stretch. The Bulls tried a comeback and lost all momentum when Skiles went with his beloved 3 small guard line up, which maybe works 10% of the time. It was a bad decision, just like not even trying Tyrus in the 2nd half.

I don't think the regular season means anything against Miami. Shaq's got too much pride. Homecourt may help, but realistically I don't expect to get to the 2nd round. Hope I'm wrong.

I know they're only rookies, but why even draft Thomas and Sefolosha if you're not going to play them, especially considering how those two have played over the past month.  I don't usually question Skiles and his rotation or pile on Duhon, but what the F?  Duhon on Carter?  Give me a break.  Why let Jersey dictate the flow of the game?  Get some athletes in there and run those bastards off the floor!

Did I mention I hate the Nets.

by jamestkirk on Apr 18, 2007 9:28 PM CDT reply actions

yes
I can't remember the exact lineup we used during the 3rd quarter in Detroit a few weeks back, but I know both rookies were out there, and I think they were teamed with Deng, Hinrich and Gordon...or something like that.  Anyway, that lineup absolutely ran those a-holes out of the building...in their house!

I know, Detroit and Jersey are different teams, so the comparison might not be a perfect, but I remember thinking the Pistons (the not-to-distant champs) looked like bunch of lunchtime YMCA wannabes as the Bulls simply ran them over.

That's my only question, why doesn't Skiles throw his most athletic lineup out there more often?  Mix and match with Ben Wallace, but fiddle around with those 6 for a while.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Apr 18, 2007 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

But it wasn't . . .
Since the Bulls weren't good enough to win those games.  You can play the what-if game all you want, but the fact is that they needed that win to get the 2 seed, so it was an important game.

by Big D on Apr 18, 2007 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeeeeaaaahh, but by his "reasoning"
(and I am demonstrating a tremendous amount of intellectual largesse by applying that term here), game one of a playoff series would be just as important and dramatic as game seven. Yet it isn't that way in practice. Game seven is always viewed as the most dramatic and important, because of its finality. I don't think it was a stretch to call this the most important game of the season, because of its utter finality.

We had two chances in the last week to clinch the two seed, at Toronto and at New Jersey. We choked in both games. Why? I don't know. But we did.

For all the progress people who won't read this cuz they can't see it: if you think progress is determined by one game, you're an idiot. If you think progress would have been determined by a playoff series win over an Eastern Conference bottom feeder, you're an idot. If you think the Bulls have already lost the 1st round, you're an idiot.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Apr 18, 2007 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with
Paxson Jackson. This game is not the end of the world and we can still make noise in the playoffs.

by SRQman on Apr 18, 2007 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

And if you think that having the number 2
seed in the playoffs and holding home court advantage until at least the conference finals and avoiding the Cavs, Heat, and Pistons until those conference finals isn't important or desirable, then you are a moron of almost epic proportions.

I don't think anyone is saying the Bulls didn't "make progress" this season. I am saying that they just made their playoff path exponentially more difficult as a result of their own failure to play well tonight. And playoff success is utlimately the measure of success in the NBA. The game is played for championships.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 18, 2007 9:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Bullshit
Progress isn't defined by beating an Eastern Conference bottom-feeder, it's defined by getting a good enough seed to be in a position to face a bottom-feeder in the first round, instead of having to face a team that just happens to the the fucking defending NBA Champions.  The Bulls may beat Miami, but if you think that they're just going to steamroll over them like they would have steamrolled through Washington, then you're the idiot.

by Big D on Apr 18, 2007 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I am not saying
It wouldn't have been easier having the 2 seed and Miami will be a tough series but we still have a chance to move on and if they play well they can make it far. The big question is if they can play well in the playoffs.

We are a
Jump shooting team. Its been said a million times, when we are hitting our shots, were unstoppable, when we are not, we suck. Today we definetly were not hitting.

Defensively the match-ups were wierd. Ben gordon on kidd not good, hinrich on carter not good. Double teaming off of every pick moore set NOT GOOD. I thought hinrich should have handled kidd, gordon could handle richardson, and deng on Carter. And eventually sefolosha on Carter or Richardson.

They had more energy, we were lacking since the end of the first. They played us with better defense, they had the match-ups in thier favor. They got the boards, the fouls, they got left open, and we dragged on. We had so many moments to take the game but we couldnt

Can we beat miami, yes, even if they have shaq back from the fountain of youth, we can beat them. Can we beat the nets, GOD YES, we just have to want it more then them. This was a good game, the bulls tasted something bitter, its no longer a surprise visit to the playoffs, and when you lose you say "hey i cant believe we almost won that series"...now its become, we ARE a playoff team, and are in line to be the best in the east, so dammit we wont let ourselves become otherwise.

The hell with gasol, and super shaq, and Kaptain Kidd, the bulls, the hardworkers they are refuse to vanish silently into the night...hope the nets advance to face the bulls after the bulls destroy miami.

Do you taste it bulls players? Do you taste it bulls fans? The taste of humiliation and defeat. The Taste of not playing your best. Rise against today and play for tomaro and show the nba that the bulls are ready to stampede!

All is not lost
We owned the heat this year (3-1 in the series).  They are a bunch of punks/has-beens who will get dethroned first round by none other than DA BULLS.   Does anyone remember the first game of the season.  Just run the floor, play a fast transition game and get Shaq in foul trouble.  It won't be easy but it CAN be done.  Wade is NOT 100% although we usually do a decent job on him anyway.  This game was a wake up call and we will respond. We got home court and then it's on to Detroit who we OWNED as well (3-1 in the series).  I honestly think we match up better with this half of the bracket than against the Nets or Toronto as demonstrated in the last couple games.

What I am more pissed about was the Knicks winning. That will probably drop us a couple spots and knock us out of the race barring a miracle lottery draw.  Looks like a major trade will be on the horizon if we are one and done again.

I said earlier tonight that is was franchise
changing.

However, I was really referring to the fact that it will give a boost to the Cavs franchise, who will be handed a de facto bye against the Wiz, it seems.

It can be franchise changing for the Bulls as well, but only if we lose to the Heat.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 18, 2007 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I think
it is franchise-changing either way. If we actually win against Miami, it's a huge boost and will probably be considered a huge upset. If we lose, it's a sign that Pax will re-evaluate thoroughly this summer.

by nas on Apr 18, 2007 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't agree with that.
I refuse to believe that Paxson would pull the trigger only because the Bulls (hopefully dont) lose to Miami in the first round. What if the Bulls would have played Washington/Orlando/NJ, with the putrid lineup that they have, won against the inexperienced Raptors, only to get knocked off by the Heat/Cavs/Pistons? Would that somehow make this season more valuable than the other two, because we beat Washington and Toronto?

I hope that whatever happens in the playoffs that nothing drastic is changed.

by 1958ChiTown on Apr 18, 2007 10:04 PM CDT reply actions

Here is the bottom line from tonight.
I am going to say this, then log off to regain strength and sanity for the playoffs.

(1) We played poorly overall, especially Gordon, Luol, and BWall. Our interior defense and rebounding was terrible. That's why we lost, IMO;

(2) We can beat the Heat. I think we are a better team than the Heat. However, they have two superstars, who typically get special treatment in the playoffs. We'll have to overcome that;

(3) I think we can beat the Pistons, as well. In fact, I think we WILL beat the Pistons if we can get through the Heat;

(4) Despite needless mockery of Noce, PaxJax is right about the team as a whole. We made progress this year as a franchise. It was a fun year in the UC. 31-10;

(5) It will be interesting to see how Paxson uses the Knicks pick and manages the offseason. Very interesting;

(6) The most difficult thing about the next few days will be the barrage of negative press about the Bulls. I'm sure Mariotti and Simmons and the rest will decry the team. The Bulls should ignore it. If they don't, it will either motivate them or destroy their confidence.

Regardless of what comes, I am going to be loud and insane come Saturday/Sunday and Monday/Tuesday.  If one thing is certain, you KNOW the crowd is going to be nuts to play hated Riley and the Heat. I am going to scream until my voice gives out.

agreed this will mean more
And as I said when just a day ago we were so happy when columnists were picking the Bulls as the favorites: none of that matters compared to the actual results. We'll find out what level this team is at in the series. Unlike last season, I consider the Bulls losing this series to the Heat to be a failure. The Bulls are better and had the MUCH better season.
