Game Thread #73: Bulls vs. Detroit Pistons

[From the Diaries. Thanks to NittanyBull for tonight's game preview. I don't vision tonight as much about making a statement against Detroit as just getting a big win to catch Cleveland. But a well-played game by the Bulls against the Pistons on national TV (and in front of a hopefully excited crowd which includes yours truly) could do wonders for playoff confidence, or at least the fans' confidence. Plus we all hate the Pistons. -Matt]

Well, finding that I can't really contain myself for tonight, I thought that I might as well do somewhat of a thread preview to tonight's game, as our Bulls(42-30) take on conference-leading(ugh) Detroit Pistons(45-25). It does look like that neither 105-year old Webber or Hamilton are playing this game, both due to illness. So, Flip Murray and Jason Maxiell will start at the United Center tonight. I for one would have liked both Webber and Hamilton to be healthy and ready to play, so we could see where the Bulls are as a team at this point of the season. But we all can't get what we want, now can we?

As mostly everyone knows, Deng came off of a career-high 38 points, last game against the Blazers. I think it'll be interesting to see how he matches up against Prince, but more how Hinrich will fare without having to chase Hamilton all around the court tonight.

What I'd like to see tonight: less than 12 turnovers, more than 22 FTA, Hinrich shooting over 45%, Gordon to clock in more than 35 minutes, and, well, for Thomas to squash a ball from Wallace right back onto his face(What would you like to see tonight?)

Tonight's game is broadcasted over TNT, which is freaking great for me, as I don't get WGN over here.

So, all in all... lets go Andre Barrett!

Whoa, odd timing
I'll delete that poor effort I put up before this on the diaries. Thanks NittanyBull

Big Ben in his new kicks
I'm pretty excited about this one.  Big Ben wearing his new Starburys, the national attention, Loul coming off his killer game,  and since the Knicks beat the Cavs yesterday, we're closer to getting the two seed in the east.

by brianmita on Mar 29, 2007 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

I still want to know
what model Converse Hinrich wears.  Anyone know?

by Whitebacon on Mar 30, 2007 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Those are
pretty neat shoes he has been wearing. My guess is that they are designed for him and are not available to the public. I know the ones he wore last season and the beginning of this season had his name and number on them. Maybe some day he will have a line available to the piblic.
Note to Ben Gordon: Please stop committing stupid offensive fouls.

I didn't say
he would Miles. I just said that maybe someday he would have a shoe with his name available to the public. It has nothing to do with Wade.

Key to victory
will be points in the paint.  If the bulls are settling for j's all night, it will be a long game.  If they drive the basketball, they create free throw ops.

I want to see the Bulls score a lot,
just so maybe for once I don't have to listen to CB go on about the "Bulls can't score."  Even better if they score a lot inside.

OK, realistically, I know he'll still talk about them being a jump shooting team, or it just showing how a post presence would help, but I do get tired of the Bulls setting him up with his old tired "can't score" line.

And I have to miss this one!  For some reason, I can't convince my co-workers that a nationally televised Bulls game is sufficient reason to reschedule some stupid meeting...

by wjb1492 on Mar 29, 2007 5:38 PM CDT reply actions

I can't do the delay thing.
No will power whatsoever - I have to get online and get the final results ASAP.  After that, watching the game just isn't the same.

Anyway, our meeting ended up being really short because the VCR ate some training tape we were suppose to watch in the boss's absence, and the boss wasn't there to make us do something else instead - so I was home before the end of the 2nd quarter.  :)

by wjb1492 on Mar 30, 2007 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Since I
can't stand CB I'll stick with Stacey and the boys.

I just want to see them play four solid quarters. No let downs.

GO BULLS!!!

Go Bulls!
My brother called me about this game.  Both of us are big fans.  Both have moved away from the second city to some other-numbered cities.

Its a big game.  We win, and we can overtake the Cavs on Saturday.  That will also be a big game.  Together, these are the two biggest games the Bulls have played since the last 2 against the Heat.  Of course, there ARE bigger ones to come.  But still . . .

GO BULLS!

If the playoffs started today...
we would play the Wizard. Seeing how we are all hyped about possible getting 2nd seed. Which team would you like to face: Toronto, Washington, Miami, New Jersey, Orlando, or Indiana? Why?

by lwinston300 on Mar 29, 2007 7:10 PM CDT reply actions

Indiana -- terrible, out of sync
then, in order,

Orlando -- very very young and streaky
Toronto -- very young and the Bulls own them
Washington -- injuries, and haven't been solid, plus their 2 bigs like to beat on each other
New Jersey -- beat up, but they have great vets and have given the Bulls trouble
Miami -- I'd love to see the Bulls play them and win, but I'd HATE to see them play and lose to this team.  I'd love to beat the Heat in Round 2 or something.

Line-ups
2 completely different line-ups. There is no reason Duhon, Griffin, Allen and PJ should all be in the game together at one time.

by nas on Mar 29, 2007 8:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah, but there is!
Without that lineup, the Bulls would have scored, and that would have screwed up CB's halftime "Bulls can't score, 0 chance these teams score 100" speech.

by wjb1492 on Mar 29, 2007 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It almost doesn't seem fair that Kirk's
"night off" from chasing Rip means he instead gets to guard Chauncy.  I think he's doing exceptionally well at that without picking up another foul.  Chauncy really has looked rather funny trying to draw that 4th on Kirk.

by wjb1492 on Mar 29, 2007 9:07 PM CDT reply actions

Weirdest thing is
4 fouls isn't a death sentence for Kirk.  He's wasted time on getting 4.  5 is bad, but it was just silly to try so hard.

I'm good with this
Would have liked the end to be a little less nerveracking, but considering they only shot .357 for the game I'm just glad to end up with the W.

by wjb1492 on Mar 29, 2007 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

Hey, NittanyBull
You got almost everything you asked for - only 10 TOs, 28 FTA, 37 minutes for Gordon, great game from Ty (although I don't remember posters by Ty on Rasheed, I still think this one counts).

The only thing you didn't get was Kirk shooting 45% (only 35.7%) - but even there, he did a nice job on Chauncy (who shot an even worse 18.8%), so maybe this one should count, too?

by wjb1492 on Mar 29, 2007 9:56 PM CDT reply actions

I'm sure not complaining!
I think Hinrich, despite his FG%, played great tonight. Can't argue about the outcome eh?

by NittanyBull on Mar 29, 2007 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Game of ups and downs for both teams.. neither
team looked great...

I don't know what you guys expect ESPN's headline to say?  I mean, you did win by 2, over a team without 2 of 5 starters AND Flip Murray reverted back to typical Flip Murray so...  What do you want?  IF Maxiell or Sheed went off tonight without Ben Wallace down low, you'd say "well it woulda been different with Big Ben down low.."..

CHI played better at Detroit than they did tonight in CHI.  If you can't do anything to stop Tay, then you definitely will have a hard time with Tay and Rip in the lineup, but of course, I'm a Pistons' fan and my team just lost so let the homers rip into me...

How about this for my game wrap up - "Both teams played hard".  Good?

by Boney @ Blog a Bull on Mar 29, 2007 10:17 PM CDT reply actions

Oh Boner, you scamp
If you think the comments in here are over the top, you should probably know the excitement and positivity would be no different had the Bulls routed the Hawks on a Monday.

If Tayshaun Prince, Rip Hamilton, and Webber were any good I'm sure Detroit would have actually missed them.

Wait a second . . .
people that post on a team-specific blog tend to be homers and fans?

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

And as for your (whiny) point about your guys being out, my dad's postgame comment from yesterday summed it up quite nicely: "Everybody is missing guys at this point of the season.  Nobody's crying for Detroit."

warriors vs. phoenix
Love the bulls win but this game is pretty entertatining.  When the warriors are playing nicely  its quite beautiful to watch and with those old school jerseys they have a lot more style than the suns.

by Sambossanova on Mar 29, 2007 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

Just watched the game...
...with my roommate who is a die-hard Pistons fan.  Made for some solid tension and banter.  By the end we were both drunk, but I came away with more energy.  Could be because he had to wake up at 4am.  Could be because my Bulls pulled out the win.  Caveats galore on this one considering the Pistons were without two starters, but I'll take the win.  Bulls looked great outside of the second quarter and nearly giving the game away at the end.

Playoffs were clinched tonight (just a formality), and Bulls earned at worst a split w/ Pistons on the season.  SATURDAY IS HUUUUUUGE.  Win there puts Bulls in sole possession of 2nd (as we all know).  But the Cavs have a relatively easy schedule the rest of the way, so getting that win is key.

heh
although that one probably was the result of a foul. Ben did a great job of drawing those last night.

Why do all female Pistons fans wear form-fitting,
low cut jerseys and jeans?

It's like their uniform. They were everywhere last night.

Are they holding a contest to see who can be the biggest white trash urban hooer?

Not that I am complaining, mind you, if the Detroit trollops want to put on a show for my viewing pleasure.

Tyrus' Height
Is it me or does Tyrus look at least an inch taller than both Deng and Wallace? I know Wallace is listed at 6'9 and everyone says he really is 6'7 - 6'8. According to that one Bulls.com article from a couple of summers ago, they said Deng had grown to a legitimat 6'9. Thomas was also listed at a generous 6'9 after the draft, since then he was closer to 6'8. But to me, Thomas looks like he is 6'10 when he stands next to Deng. It is possible since he's the age of a college sophomore. That would be great if he could keep growing to be 6'11. There is our power forward. Have you guys noticed this as well that Thomas looks taller than 6'9?

by RingItUp26 on Mar 30, 2007 4:40 PM CDT reply actions

I don't
know how tall exactly he is but I don't think it matters because the kid can jump.

He certainly can...
If he's not already 6'10, he certainly plays like it and then some.

is thinking... man, I remember when I could do that shit. Stupid fucking knees.

by tyger1147 on Mar 31, 2007 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Thomas measured at 6-8 1/2
in shoes before the draft.  Deng measured at 6-8 in shoes before his draft.  Although Deng has supposedly grown at least inch or two.  I would assume Deng and Tyrus are roughly the same height.  The big difference is Tyrus's extra eight inches on his vertical.

by Scotter on Mar 30, 2007 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions

He did look taller...
I know that Tyrus can jump out of the gym, but he, seriously, appeared to be taller when he stood right next to Deng.
