Open Game Thread #4: Bulls vs. Los Angeles Clippers

[Thanks to JoeMoses for tonight's game preview. Noah's been (reportedly, from WSCR) activated for tonight, and may be taking some of Wallace's minutes. -Matt]

Win number 1? Not so fast, unless Skiles has found the cure already to our lackluster start. These are the generic Clippers (no Brand). Check out the enemy in a Blog-A-Bull look alike, at ClipsNation.

Imho, I think this game (7:30pm CST, ComcastSportsNet, AM1000) is going to be further trouble for the Bulls.  Who has been the biggest dissapointment in the three games: Deng? No. Kirk? No. I say with that without a doubt it is Big Ben. Then along comes the possible breakout player of the year in this young season. Chris Kaman has started hot. He is averaging 18 ppg and 16.5 rpg along with 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal per game. I only hope that the fact that he did this against very bad defensive teams (Seattle and Golden State) means he will not continue at this torrid pace. I also hope that the reports that he is questionable for the game prove to have merit.

I worry about the Kaman-Wallace matchup because Wallace often has trouble with offensive minded centers who can move and have legit 7 foot size. This would be a much better matchup for the Noah-Gray combo as I don't think Kaman would hurt them as much.

To add doubt to a Bull victory, Quinton Ross shut down Ben Gordon last year (BG was a combined 7 for 25 in two games against the Clippers).

Another couple notes: I fear that the foul line issues will continue as Maggette and Cassell get the line often against anyone, including the Bulls. Further, a Cassell and Mobley backcourt is another big backcourt that often has given us problems. Mobley has started the season shooting 53% from the field, averaging 19 ppg and 5.5 rpg. Ruben Patterson seems to always play over his head against the Bulls and is fitting in nicely with the Clips at 12 ppg, 3 spg (lookout BG and Noch before you throw the ball), and 1.5 bpg while shooting 61% from the field.  Finally, Tim Thomas, who usually has a rare bout of motivation when going against the Bulls is averaging 20 ppg on 53% from the 3 point line.

After the game, lets just hope our Bulls are singing "I was lost, but now I'm found".

Biggest game of the season rigch hera.....
well so far. I know it's young in the season but I wana see a statement game. Make the Lakers lust after your basketballs. Show the world that you can ball and rep the East like we knew ya could! That being said I won't be watching I have plans. Good luck Bulls. Time to earn your fat pay checks.
Did the Bulls trade for Kobe today? Oh, so I still have to watch these midgets?

I'm not an expert on the religious tunage
but I have a feeling those lyrics are incorrect.

Maggette has something like a .700 TS% against the Bulls, FYI.

Officially a hater on Ballhype!

Actually, "tunnage"
is a non-stadard form of "tonnage," which is a nautical term...and the lyrics you rightly questioned are from a poem penned by a sea captain, upon the occassion of his conversion experience, when he gave up transporting slaves to the new world.

Nice preview JoeMoses
After reading the preview I am more nervous about tonight's game than I was.  I did not realize Quentin Ross did such a good job on Gordon.  I think the Chandler - Wallace essential swap may be Paxson's first real bad move.  Let's hope we are all in a better mood after tonight's game.

He's STILL bitter about the whole Bulls situation with him

what's he got to be really bitter about
he got to play with the Suns and fool the Clippers into paying him too much money.

There are Knicks and Bucks fans around who are bitter about him.

I stocked up on ice cream today
Just in case the game goes badly - but for right now I'm sure I won't need it.  This is going to be like Game 4 of the Detroit series when the guys magically break out of their shooting slumps and look invincible, after the 3 games of looking outmanned and without confidence.

Ben Wallace
is playing like garbage.  Whether he's hurt or not, he's hurting the team, and he shouldn't be out there.  That's several times he's come up empty on key plays - missed layups, turned the ball over.  At present, he brings nothing.  The Bulls would be better served with Noah or Gray.  At least they make their layups, and half their free throws.

Nice job the last 4-5 minutes cutting the LA lead to 5. We saw a lot of games last year where the defense in the first half was terrible only to have it ratcheted up in the 3rd quarter. I'm cautiously optimistic about the Bulls' chances in the second half.

Well, shooting is better tonight
Bulls at 46.3%, and that's including BG's 1 for 8.

Assists seem low, though (9 on 19 made baskets), and Kirk doesn't have a single assist right now.

Mobley can't keep hitting everything, right?  I mean he's at 53.1% for the season before tonight, but 10 for 10?  He shoots his average, that's 4 missed shots and the Bulls lead.

by miserabull on Nov 6, 2007 9:06 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

that made so little sense
i dont even know where to begin...
  1. Bulls have had slow starts in last 3 years, yet made the playoffs.
  2. West > East
  3. Bulls will be in the playoffs, conference finals, probably NBA finals.
right now celtics and pistons > bulls and cavs, later on in the season: bulls > celtics and pistons > cavs > many teams > heat

great..
  1. Bulls have had slow starts because they were a young team with players still developing. They are not young any more and they are still losing to inferior teams.
  2. & 3. If the Bulls "will be in the conference finals, probably NBA finals" ...great!, but they wouldn't even make it to the playoffs if they were in the western conference.  That's how mediocre they are.

BULLS ARE THE WORST TEAM IN THE NBA
Ok it is official. The Heat are bad but they don't have wade. The Sonics are rebuilding. The Bulls have no excuses. They're 0-5 (If you think they're beating the Pistons on Thursday you need a lobotomy) and sinking.

Looking at the standings I can't really see any team that is worse. Maybe Sacramento, so congrats the Bulls are #2.

Realistically their best shot at a win comes against the Hawks, after Thanksgiving. They're going to be 0-10 and will probably lose that one too because the Hawks are a legitimate team.

for the last 3 years there were slow starts and the team was fine. will happen again this year. basically because New Jersey was so early on the schedule, they always send the bulls reeling (sans last years final game). the bulls will be fine, and still have a great shot to get top seed and finals chances.

Celtics and Pistons seem insurmountable now, but they wont after they bulls start winning post-circus

A Ben Wallace buyout is a no-brainer at this point. He'll joing the Pistons for the vet's minimum and help them win a title. Just like good 'ol Pax wrote it up.

They should probably trade the "core" for picks and marginal talent so they could shut it down for the year and build for the future. If they follow this plan they could get back up to average in 3 years and contend in 6.

that 3 minutes included 2 BG misses and a BG blocked shot, 2 Kirk misses, and one Lu miss.

And overall they still shot horribly as a team (35.7%), but that includes BG's 4-18 (22.2%) and 0 for 4s from both Thabo and Joakim.  The rest of the team shot 44.8%.

Sue, pay no attention to these prophets of doom. This was another loss, but there were signs of life and the Bulls could have won this game, and when you consider the way they were down, only good thing could be ahead. Just remember that most of these people killing the Bulls tonight are people  with an axe to grind and even when success comes they will still not be satisfied. by SlamDunk on Nov 6, 2007 11:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Collectively, yes
But that is primarily because of BG shooting 22.2% and Thabo and Joakim both going 0-4.  Ben Wallace also shot poorly, although that's sort of expected.  Everyone else shot much better than they have been, and overall they looked better.

I'm with Sue that it was a step in the right direction.  Would be nice if it was a bigger step, but at this point I'll take it.

I will say that Skiles not playing Tyrus
in the 4th quarter pissed me off.  Smith was playing well, but his legs were dead by 1/2 way through the 4th, and Wallace is still useless.  I thought Thomas was having another solid game, not great or bad just solid.  The Clippers killed the Bulls on the boards the last six minutes when he came in.  A 6'7" center that can't jump just isn't very useful.

All any opposing team has to do is watch tape
on how to finish off the Bulls.
Skiles pulls the same crap every game - WAY too predictable.

And the rest of the team follows suit and pulls THEIR same crap then too.

And here's a thought: This team was minus it's Best player in Brand...
Yet ANOTHER player the Bulls shoulda never let go.

Hopeless.

Is it spring training yet?

Its' time to admit that Thabo is a bust.
Rather see Gardner or Curry then the Swedish Brick layer.

He'll come around.
I would love to see Gardner considering Gordon struggles.
Did the Bulls trade for Kobe today? Oh, so I still have to watch these midgets?

Dissapointed, but excited about Noah's inside
presence. He runs the floor, blocks shots and goes for dunks off the offensive rebound instead of that weak crap we have become all too accustomed to with the Bulls front line players.

reminicent
remember the year before they got good?

when that starting lineup of Jamal Crawford, Scottie Pippen, Jalen Rose, Tyson Chandler, and Eddy Curry was going to bring the Bulls their first playoff trip since the Jordan-Pippen era?

But, then it seemed everybody, even the random bench guys (roger mason jr) just got worse and nobody on the team gave a crap if they won or lost?

this recent play has kind of reminded me of that

I do, however, think Skiles is a better coach than Cartright and can turn it around, leading the Bulls to the Finals where they were supposed to be going anyway.

Miami Heat of last year played when they felt like it with the attitude of 'we are better sos we will win', but then couldnt 'turn it on'. The Bulls are acting like that. From the Hardest working team in the league to a team that believes it will come to them.

They can get the edge back, i still think its only a matter of time.

The Bulls will be ok I think.
I remember last season when everyone was fresh out of the box. Then the grind kicks in and the kinks worked out. Luck swings.

nobody on this team
knows their limitations. I'm tired of yelling "no" at my tv when a) Gordon flies into the lane, b) Thomas goes one-on-one, c) Thabo and/or Wallace shoots from anywhere, or -- tonight was the introduction of -- d) Noah showcases his post moves.   We have a pile of offensive liabilities and they need to understand their roles in the half-court.

Skiles micromanaging the game with his rotations/punitive substitutions would be e) on that list, but I typically don't scream at him unless he plays Deng/Smith/Duhon/Noah/Thabo for over half the fourth quarter and allows the offense to be run away from Deng and Smith.

Oh, and Tim Thomas outhustling the Bulls for a critical late fourth quarter possession was a tiny  dagger in my optimistic heart. If this team stops hustling, well, I might as well start comparing Roy Hibbert vs. Hasheem Thabeet mixtapes

I think the Bulls need to tweak something...
Joe Smith would be better along side Wallace at the start of the game. They might have to try something at the 2 guard it's just not working. Either Loul,Sefo, or Gardner should atleast get a look. This is over done having Kirk guarding twos. I don't in all honestly the Bulls look rusty. They didn't all play together in preseason maybe thats part of the slow start. It's so predictable the have someone follow Gordon through screens and shadow him. Of course Mobley being on fire didn't really help. When are the Bulls going to take that tacky backetball away from behind the bull? I think it's time to up date the court. Maybe Change with the times? Go back to the ll red court.

This team needs to work with each other during the
summers. Whatever happened to those day? When Paxson was having everyone come in the summer? I swear to god it's like the first time these guys have met.

The Bulls did play better tonight
And that's what's scary.  They played better, and yet they still lost at home to a bad team.  What's going to happen when they play better teams?  They could easily play well (as opposed to being "slightly less shitty") against the Pistons and Raptors and still lose.

I was at the game tonight, and I really don't understand why Wallace is even playing.  He's obviously hurt - at least he better be.  He sure isn't helping the team by playing like this, so I don't know what the Bulls are gaining by having him out there.  Why risk having his injury linger for half the season?

And speaking of punitive substitutions - Joakim Noah needs to be benched every time he launches a jump shot outside of the paint.
