Open Game Thread #11: Bulls at New York Knicks

[Thanks to Big D for today's game thread. -Matt]

The Bulls will get to face a team even more screwed up than they are when they take on the Knicks in a rare Saturday matinée (12:00 Central, WGN).

There's really nothing to say about the Knicks' problems that hasn't already been said, so I'll stick to discussing their on-court performance.  So far this season, the Knicks have had two main problems: they're a very poor defensive team, and they play selfishly.  They're 26th in the league in Defensive Efficiency, and next-to-last in Assist Ratio.  Neither stat is surprising considering their roster - Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph, and Stephon Marbury are terrible defenders and black holes on offense.  As bad as the Bulls have shot so far this season, they should get plenty of open looks against this team, and eventually you'd have to think some of those shots will start falling.

There's been a lot of criticism of Scott Skiles on here lately, and while I agree with a lot of it, I'm not ready to say he should be fired just yet.  As frustrating as the rotations have been at times, they haven't lost because Tyrus Thomas hasn't played enough minutes, or because Andres Nocioni or Adrian Griffin have played too much.  They've lost because they've shot terribly, Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon in particular.  It seems unfair to blame Skiles for their shooting woes.  Hinrich and Gordon aren't going to continue shooting 34% and 37% respectively (and if they do, the Bulls are screwed anyways), so why not wait until they start hitting some shots to fully evaluate Skiles' performance?

Luol Deng will reportedly be a game-time decision, and the Bulls are considering inserting Joe Smith in the starting lineup in place of Nocioni.  Getting Deng back would be nice, but even without him the Bulls shouldn't be losing to teams like the Knicks.  Hopefully Gordon will enjoy going back to his old stomping grounds and will finally hit some shots.  At the very least, though, it should be interesting to see if certain players enjoyed the NYC nightlife a little bit too much.

He's saying what I have said even if this team comes back to be good they just don't have what it takes to win the whole damn thing. I can tell when he's rubbing his eyes.

the Bulls don't win today then there are no answers for this team.
Please get this season turned around and play some great basketball.

I know how much we want to win today.
You know how much I want to beat the Knicks.  It would not shock me if we lost. The way we are playing it would surprise me if we won.  We have the  worst point differential in the NBA -9.8 espn.  This is worse than Minnesota, Seattle and the Knicks at -8.6.  The Knicks are also desperate for a win. The "boos" and "fire Isiah" chants cascading down from the upper levels of the Garden may motivate them.  Considering the way we have been playing we could be the perfect patsy for them to get a win.  Despite the chants for his removal, Isiah Thomas thinks he will last the whole season NY Daily New - Lawrence.

Blog-a-Bull is bursting with angst, anger and suggestions as a result of the Bulls putrid play.  I am at a loss to explain the lack of energy, the inability to complete and the overall miserable play of the Bulls.  Despite this I will be glued to the TV, watching the Blog-a-Bull Diary, hoping this game makes us smile.

Wallace suffered an injury at the season's start,
and Deng suffered an injury soon thereafter.  Not many teams could survive injuries that effectively took out their two best players, and the Bulls are more vulnerable than most, since they don't really have a third great player.   I'm hoping that soon the Bulls will be back to full strength and we will see if they can get on course.

However I find it disturbing that Thomas is in Skiles' doghouse.  If Thomas deserves it, then that is not good.  If Thomas does not deserve it, that is also not good.  The future of this team rests on Wallace retaining his ability, Deng developing his ability, and finding a third great player.  So far the Bulls have had setbacks in all three areas, but it's a long season.

Did you reading in that article about adjusted +- being updated during the season? Have you seen anywhere (whether the original site or someone who is trying to mimic it) that has had any updated +- stats yet? Just curious.

I'm not a huge stathead, but I think it's +/- adjusted for pace of the game, the lineups on the floor, and so forth. I could be wrong, though.

I agree
Right now, the Bulls are the worst team in the league. This first half has been the sorriest performance I have seen in the NBA this year. The Knicks are a terrible team playing poorly (shooting under 40%, 55% from the line) and they are up 12. Sure, Deng is out, but even with him back it will be a long climb out of the cellar.

by Bluelou on Nov 24, 2007 1:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I thought.
There's almost no reason to hang onto a guy with back problems.  I'm thinking of Joe Crede, for example.  They can be great, but they're hard to depend on because you never know when they could go down, or for how long.  A fucked-up back is a bad deal for an athlete.

I didn't see the TOR or DEN blowouts
but this is some of the worst BB ever played! It seems twice as bad as the MIL game, when the Bull defense seemed responsible for the Bucks futility, at least.

Can't believe there are only 10 turnovers, because they are blatant, retarded ones when that've occured. Even Red said "They're just handing the ball to them!"

If they play this bad against TOR, it could be a record setting loss.

IT's time the Bulls realized there is only one
"go to guy" on their team, Tyrus Thomas. He is a stud and needs to be fed like the beast he is. Skiles has to chill on this kid and let him develope. The rest of the Bulls feed off of his energy. Let's get our house in order. If Lamarcus (cant jump) Aldridge is carrying Portland, Tyrus can carry the Bulls. And if he doesn't carry them at least there will be a few highlights.

Nothing new though...
If you remember last year when the Bulls sucked, they would blow it late in the games then as well.

Losing Eddy Curry set the Bulls back about 5
years. Now we have to wait for Tyrus and Noah to turn into all-stars. By that time Wallace will be too old. That makes the Chandler trade look worse since he was going to be around for the young guys to develope.

I wholly concur. Tyrus needs lots of minutes.
I really don't care if he doesn't sprint down court every time. As we have all noted, there is blame to go around on this team. Don't single out our only stud player. Let's make Tyrus our go to guy, just as Aldridge is in Portland. Noah should also be given burn since Wallace won't be around by the time the Bulls are really competitive anyways.

Just got back from the game...observations
Alright these might seem obvious but here are some observations:

-Thabo needs to put a bit more arch on his shot...its like watching shaq shoot free throws.  Its not that he has bad aim, he just doesnt put arch on his shot.
-The bulls are killing themselves when they miss open three point shots.  Ben Gordon, Hinrich and Nocioni should hit at least 50 percent of their open three pointers.  It leads to fast break opportunities for the other teams/makes it harder for bulls to get back on defense.
-Joe Smith is almost worthless if he can't hit the 10-15 footer.  Sure he had a couple nice other plays, but he is in there mostly for his ability to hit the 10-15 footer.
-Say what you want, but PJ Brown was a good defender and we could have used him tonight. Bulls are consistently getting outrebounded, but that also has to do with the fact that the bulls are shooting like crap and wallace cant jump as high as he used to.
-Ben Gordon would be amazing if he got allen iverson treatment.  And those offensive fouls called on him were complete bullshit.
-Once Tyrus starts hitting 7-15 foot shots, he will actually be an option offensively, but until then everyone will give him lots of space to shoot and no space to drive.
-Although I would like to blame Skiles more, I feel like the offensive sets they are running are good...they just cant finish and execute.  It's like watching a high school team.
-Lastly, funny observation is that the bulls weren't even hitting their shots during warm-ups. It was truly sad.

by Sambossanova on Nov 24, 2007 4:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I haven't yet done the research to prove this,
but my observation of the games leads me to believe that Smith is one of the worst (if not THE worst) defenders on the team thus far this season.

4-17.
That's what Gordon shot today.

4 for fucking 17.

He is supposed to be a scorer. That's his contribution to the team.

So far, he has contributed very little.

However, Hinrich has arguably contributed even less.

Until those two players stop playing like drunken yard gnomes, very little else matters.

This is depressing. Things will get ugly at the UC unless they improve drastically.

Tyrus fans...get over it
He picked up quick fouls every time he was in. Skiles tried to play him but he accumulated 5 fouls within those 16 minutes. Some fans act as if there was an anti Tyrus conspiracy.  Sure he should play more, but shooting 2-9 and picking up 5 fouls in 16 minutes isnt going to do much for him.

We Need
A. Gray to see the floor a little more. All we do is dribble the ball outside the freethrow line, set picks outside the freethrow line, then we shoot a 3 and miss. Does Skiles know we are last in the league in 3 point shooting? Put Gray in the game throw the ball down to him and let him hit a 2 footer instead of us shooting jumpers all day. Nobody guards the basket because we have nobody to throw the ball to down there. We played 2 6-10 guys and our 7 footer played 20 seconds. Joe Smith didn't want nothing to do with Curry. Skiles couldn't see that? Start the offense in the paint and work it back out, please Skiles.

Trade
Ben Wallace and Thabo to Atl for Josh smith Zaza Pachulia . Then trade Ben Gordon and Duhon to The Kings for Mike Bibby ans a 1st round pick. If im correct the kings will suck this year and we will be able to draft Oj Mayo or Roy Hibbert. I just dont see this team going anywhere with this roster. What do you guys think

by eross226 on Nov 24, 2007 7:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Think about it:
The Bulls are playing so bad right now that the trade value of each of them individually must be at an all-time low. The only ways to break up this team now are to give players away for nothing or pay them to go away. That's what makes me think they're going to eventually start winning a couple games here and there.

By the end of the season, they might just win enough to miss out on a top-ten draft pick.

Watching the Bulls this season makes me realize just how fortunate the Bulls were the last few seasons.

I thought the Bulls were back... turns out they're just a back end...

Zaza Pachulia wouldn't be awful
Actually.

Posters who note Joe Smith can't play defense note the same thing I note.  He's never, except when being lauded as another great Bulls FA signing, been noted as a great defender to my knowledge.

Another thing, he's another skinny guy who shoots jumpers.  Part of our rebounding issues are due to the fact that we're clanking so many long ones, but part of them is that we're such a bunch of weaklings inside.

  • Noah is skinny and weak and gets pushed around routinely.  Well, not routinely because he's not out there long enough to call it routine, but you get the point.
  • Tyrus is skinny and short and weak and gets pushed around routinely.  He looks more and more like a 3 to me who can't shoot.
  • Smith is skinny and weak and gets pushed around.  He brings more to the table offensively than PJ Brown did, but PJ had probably 25lbs of muscle and a lot of defensive attitude and know how.  He let Wallace do more of what Wallace does best.
  • So that leave Wallace as the only guy who offers any kind of muscle at all up front. And Wallace made his bones as a guy who was a help defender playing next to a bigger, taller and stronger guy who would control the opponent's biggest and strongest guy.
Point is, even if we were shooting better, this team would have a hell of a time controlling the glass.  And you control the glass, you control the game.  Just another somewhat capable big body, like Pachulia (or Jeff Foster, Anderson Varejao, Shelden Williams, Reggie Evans, etc) would be a helpful addition to this team if they could get him for not too much.

Varejao
is reportedly on the block - the Cavs realize they're not going to resign him.   Should we make an offer if his silly agent comes down on the salary?

Varejao
I don't see why not. Having a somewhat bulky (I think he's actually in the 240-250lb range) but still energetic defender and rebounder would be a nice thing for us, both now and in the long run.

Of course, it all depends on what the Cavs would take back and what kind of salary we'd have to give up to do it.

He's already on our team
in the form of Noah, he could already help us, and we don't play him.
