Self-Licking Ice Cream Cone? (a.k.a. the 10/18 Kobe thread)

With all the fury the last few days about an "imminent" trade shipping Kobe Bryant to Chicago, I can't help but wonder if this is the sports-radio effect of the tail wagging the dog?

Are all of these rumors, reports, etc a result of the actions of Marc Stein and Sam Smith moreso than the actions of John Paxson and Mitch Kupchak?

Everything I've read or heard has been the authors' opinions ("They could trade X, Y, and Z for Kobe") rather than actual reporting on events ("Bulls made an offer of A, B, and C for Kobe").  I can't help but think that this whole event is hype for hype's sake - something to fill the airwaves and blogosphere.

Maybe I've missed Ric Bucher's smoking gun interview, but I prefer the "Call me when someone actually gets traded" strategy to all this talking-head-spinning conjecture.  Sports, immitating blogs, immitating sports?
