Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

usa/china

anybody watching the game?

my question is... why are the chinese guys all so skinny?  don't they realize that they need to hit the weights?  if any one of those guys really fell in love with the weight room, he could dominate the cba, if not the nba (yi, i'm talking about you).

china is showing some potential early, but they're going to get beaten down.  i think hinrich would be the muscleman of the team if he was from china.

China to get beat down
Considering the game actually started at 8am ET, I don't think any predictions are necessary.

dumb rule
anyone else hate the international goaltending rule, it doesn't make for good play if you ask me

other countries are lucky the USA players are not used to it otherwise I would think they would be taking more balls off the rim

by NY Chicago Fan on Aug 7, 2006 9:43 PM CDT reply actions

A lot of NBA players are skinny
Not all people can be ripped like Gordon.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Aug 7, 2006 9:57 PM CDT reply actions

true, but
china doesn't have anybody who is ripped, except maybe yao.  it was striking to see dwight howard standing next to the chinese players... and he's only what, 20 years old?

by smegmatic on Aug 7, 2006 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

yes but
China's team looks young too and 3 of their best players aren't playing

with all that said, USA should not lose against anyone unless they go extremely cold from outside, with 3 pt line 3 feet closer in international play vs NBA it really can be even bigger factor - but I doubt they lose

um PaxJax
how do you know I am not a 6'6", 178 lb. asian?  You're being a bit presumptious, eh?

by bullshooter on Aug 8, 2006 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I do know
that you made a lousy joke about an ethnic cuisine, which added nothing to a discussion about an international basketball competition.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Aug 8, 2006 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

now you are the pc police?
Ah PaxJax, a man of many hats.  Unfortunately, you don't fit most of them.  PC'ness aside, the main staple of most chinese citizens is rice.  While a very nutritious item, it provides less protein and fat than traditional western staples like corn and bread.  Carbohydrates are necessary for energy, but protein and fats are the building blocks of muscle.  Therefore, diets with lower relative levels of protein and fat are harder to bulk up with.  Compounded with the nutritional requirements of growing to 7' and you can see why most tall people are skinny, let alone people who eat a lot of rice.

PaxJax, you talk out of your ass way too much.  Remember, you don't get any points for having the most posts...

Flippant
racism isn't fogiven because of extensive backtracking.

oh boy
now I know you are kidding.

by bullshooter on Aug 8, 2006 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

bullshooter...
it's obvious that your 'rice' comment was a racial stereotype related joke, so why bother going back and try to cover your ass with the nutritional statistics on rice?...

...and you're only being more idiotic by suggesting chinese players are trying to bulk up by eating 'more' rice.

simply stupefying.

by leeac on Aug 8, 2006 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

huh
i never said they were trying to eat more rice.  what I said was eating rice makes it harder to bulk up.  it's not like they pick these guys out at six months and start training them like Ivan Drago on roids.  It takes a lot of time to bulk up naturally, and a diet composed largely of rice isn't the way to do it.  And I am not saying that all the team eats is rice, either.  I don't think you guys understand how much rice is consumed in Asia, per capita.

RTFD
Didn't we already go over this PaxJax.  You need to read the diary.

"my question is... why are the chinese guys all so skinny?  don't they realize that they need to hit the weights?  if any one of those guys really fell in love with the weight room,..."

Mao
I have a friend who has spent years living in China.  Because of the ridiculous exchange rate, he was able to hire grad students as his personal tutors for four hours a day.  One mentioned Mao's "Great Leap Forward."  Apparently some in China refer to it as "the Great Leap Forward...into a ditch."

by jamestkirk on Aug 8, 2006 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

as a student of history
that's pretty commonly knownt hat the great leap forward took the nation back a number of years

my bad
I wasn't trying to talk down to anyone, but in the world of the blog it's hard to know who your audience is.  I should know better...this is blog-a-bull.

by jamestkirk on Aug 9, 2006 8:17 AM CDT up reply actions

thats not it
i wasnt trying to make you feel like you were talking down, im just saying that your friend's tutors weren't chinese comedians or antyhing

Gordon sidebar
You guys should all check out ESPN the mag, on a newstand or whatever, Gordon has some pics in it.  I just knew cuz I have a subscription for some reason, which I didn't order.

by cubbybear on Aug 7, 2006 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

espn mag is like teen beat for sports
The sole point of that magazine is to glorify the players, industry etc.  So you have to take their reporting with a grain of salt.  They only have hard hitting coverage when they are forced to admit the obvious, like the Barry Bonds steroid scandal. (Like, hello, you couldn't have broken that story, like 5 years ago?)  It's level of credibility is barely above "Destinations" or whatever piece-o-crap magazine you receive on the airline seat in front of you.  I received a subscription with my insider account, which I use to read NBA stuff.  I think they put you on their list for no reason whatsoever so they can boost their so-called circulation numbers, which in turn allows them to charge higher ad rates.

If I want credible NBA opinion, I go to the blogs, including blog-a-bull!!!

by GWKD on Aug 8, 2006 9:05 AM CDT up reply actions

ESPN mag is intimidating
there's alot going on there, but not much info...its spread very thin....focus WAY to much on the NFL....i like SI because its easy to digest, and i read dime mag for basketball....

but for the real news go straight to the newspapers and blogs

by milesgmsu on Aug 8, 2006 9:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I missed the game
Does anyone have the actual stats for Hinrich cuz i didn't get a chance to see the game. However, I did hear 'bron and 'melo were amazing, as usual.

walton
i forgot to mention this in my original post, but bill walton was terrible.  he struggled to pronounce the chinese names.  at times he would refer to them like, "nice play by number 10".  by the end of the game, it seemed like he gave up trying to pronounce them and was just using pronouns instead of names.

i understand that chinese can be hard to pronounce.  but if you were bill walton, wouldn't you give it 20 minutes of practice before air so you wouldn't look like an idiot?

by smegmatic on Aug 8, 2006 1:25 AM CDT reply actions

He was awful.
His voice is so monotone.
I can't wait for Iowa football!!

by sue369 on Aug 8, 2006 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree 1/2 way
yes Walton is horrible announcer

but personally I don't judge anyone's announcing skills on pronouncing of names, I know I could never pronounce any of those, its Walton's topics, inconsitancy and crazy things he says that suck

by NY Chicago Fan on Aug 8, 2006 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Walton/Illinois-Arizona
I still remember how terrible Walton's call of the elite eight game for Illinois v. Arizona was back in the Frank Williams, Brian Cook days.

Biased is an understatement. I know Luke Walton was on Arizona at the time, but COME.  ON.

I still get chills thinking about it.

by GWKD on Aug 8, 2006 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

is that rhetorical?
"but if you were bill walton, wouldn't you give it 20 minutes of practice before air so you wouldn't look like an idiot?"

Bill Walton is always an idiot.
