Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Hinrich Manuever

Looks like the class of 2003 is about to have another extension.

Star-divide

I've seen this reported in a couple sites but posted Matt's Man Sam in deference to our website configurator.  The Captain Stays Here

From the Article:

Kirk Hinrich will get a contract extension next month, and Ben Gordon, Luol Deng and Andres Nocioni are due for extensions next year.

very interesting to see Sam's idea of Nocioni coming off the bench.  i can see now that, should Smith earn a roster spot, we're pretty loaded at PG-through-SG, even without Noce.  Our front-court has a lot of bodies too.  Although, I'd be happier if more of them were over 6' 9''.  Still, good line-up.  I'm excited (even if I've been negative on Thomas and Brown up till now).

true height and tall heads
CookDing, have you seen this article?

http://www.82games.com/trueheight.htm

The author doesn't reveal his methodology (unfortunately) but he argues that Thomas's combination of reach and vertical jump adds three inches, effectively, to his actual height.

yeah
i have seen that and was aware of ty2's "true" height.  i was just going by plain ole fashioned heel-to-head height.  dagnabit.

True Height
Thomas was 6'8 1/2" at the combine in shoes.  If the guy's analysis is right then thomas will play at 6'11 3/4".  Even if he plays at 6'10" that's good enough for a power forward.

I said yesterday
that Kirk would be signed next month. Hopefully for a long time too.

Thomas measured...
6' 8 1/2" with shoes and just under 6'8" without shoes. Because the NBA always has higher measurements on the player profiles (e.g. Ben Gordon is listed at 6'3 but is really shorter than Hinrich by 1/2 inch to an inch), I would say the NBA is rounding up from that 6' 8 1/2" to make him 6'9. They always round up. It shows too. Look at Thomas's profile at the Bulls website. This would mean he would be rounded up to 7'0 in true height.

height can be overrated
yes height is sometimes advantage but it also can be overrated, Elton Brand was thought of being undersized but he scores just fine in the post and blocks plenty of shots with long arms

and there are plenty more examples, never can forget that Barkley was basically shorter than Jordan but he led league in rebounding

if you have skill you can makeup a few inches with positioning and footwork, 2-3 inches is not that big of a deal

I'd take a great 6'9" player any day over an okay 7 footer

with Wallace/Brown/Sweetney/Thomas/Allen I think Bulls will have plenty of height/beef

goes without saying
that height can be overrated.  and sure, there are plenty of examples of players that overcame vertical shortcomings.  i'm just saying that it makes me uneasy.  we got booted by the Heat and a big reason for that was a lack of size.  sure, there were other reasons, but having short frontcourt didn't help.

by CookDing on Jul 6, 2006 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

if you are worried about Shaq
we gave up Chandler and now have Wallace and PJ Brown so I think our size was upgraded

since there aren't that many dominate C scorers, I think we more importantly picked up more athletic size to match up with Wade, Lebron, VCarter, etc.

this is just a guess
but the true heighth formula that puts Tyrus Thomas at 7' would make Brand like 9'.
