What does this do to future signings and extensions?

What about our own free agents?

Star-divide

I like this deal for the most part.  My only concern is cap space.  Now, we might have trouble resigning our own free agents (Noc, Kirk, Luol etc.)  Or, does the Larry Bird rule apply?  We can resign them and go over the cap?  I am not sure how that works.  Can anyone clear that up?

don't forget Ben Gordon
So you have to trade Tyson Chandler now you would think.

by joejoeEnglish94bulls4ever on Jul 3, 2006 10:55 PM CDT reply actions

Gordon
has said in the past he wants to be a Bull his whole career.  Based on that, we can hope he doesn't just go look for the highest bidder and is willing to stay if it means taking a hometown discount.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 3, 2006 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

and Hinrich too
he wrote in like the 5th grade or something that in 2005 he wanted to be playing for the Bulls.  Hopefully he'll sign an extension that makes him a lot of money and also allows us to keep the young players and stay competitive.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 3, 2006 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Also
Hinrich should have his extension done soon.  Pax was just waiting on finding the FA center we needed to make a long-term deal with Kirk.  Noc could be signed to an extension now, but he might not if he's willing to just leave the Bulls and go to the highest bidder once he's able to.

I'm really hoping the Wallace deal is front loaded, it would really help out with extensions down the road.

Hinrich should
have his extention done in August.

deng
nah, he is the only one on the team with true offensive potential other then ben.  The difference is that deng is a lot taller than ben and he playsbetter defense. Unless they trade him nfor something extremely good, i want to see deng in a bulls uniform for a long time.

by Sambossanova on Jul 3, 2006 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I like deng too.
I think that Noc might ask too much after next season, but Deng is the only player on our team that is so far from his potential.  He can be a great player in this league, and he plays defense and can score.  He's the second youngest player on our team, I think.

by cubbybear on Jul 3, 2006 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't count the draft picks
and he's the youngest.  Thomas should be a couple years younger than him though, so yeah, second now.

Deng has shown flashes of greatness, but he still has a long way to go.  He made big gains from his rookie to soph seasons, but he also played more minutes.  Hopefully he takes this off season serious and gains some muscle and works on his game.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 4, 2006 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Deng's Potential
I agree with this.  Deng is so young and has not even tapped into his potential.  At this point, he is not a great passer, ball handler, three point shooter, and not a great on-the-ball defender, yet he averaged over 30 minutes a game and is good for 14+ each night.  Imagine what he will be doing when he is 25...

i am almost positive
that we can sign our own free agents and go over the cap space, and knowing Pax's commitment to winning, he will most likley do his best to bring them all back

Order of significance to team....
when it comes to contracts.
Wallace is locked up for 4 years now so:
1. Hinrich - leader of team, eventual All-star, for sure now with Wallace on board.
For me, 2. Nocioni - It's hard to find a bruiser SF like him that plays hard in both practice and games. Steps it up in playoffs.
  1. Gordon - this is a big year for him along with Deng. He needs to prove he is not a 6th man and can actually defend somewhat and handle the ball better. No one questions his scoring ability.
  2. Deng - With Noc at SF as well, Deng needs to prove that he's the guy to keep. I think eventually Deng is the better player, but right now, no. I'd like to see him on the Bulls for the long haul.
  3. Thomas - Besides Wallace, probably Hinrich, and maybe even another Bulls player, Thomas has the potential to be stud forward. Right now, he is 5th on my list because I haven't seen him do anything in the NBA, but he could move up to be a top 3 significant player for the Bulls down the road.

Hinrich
Steve Kerr wrote a piece in late April or May about Hinrich and said he could be the next Nash.

Hopefully Hinrich spends a lot of time with Skiles working on making asists this off season.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 3, 2006 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions

assits
not asists.

assists
damn, I'm getting old.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 3, 2006 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that Kirk
has help I look for all aspects of his game to pick up.

by sue369 on Jul 4, 2006 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree.
Mostly.  I have:
  • Hinrich
  • Gordon
  • Deng
  • Noc
Here's my logic.  Deng is only good right now, and hasn't proven much.  Signing him or Noce depending on who does better in the season is risky, but I think Deng will still be worse than noce, and will cost less, but is just as valuable.  Gordon has pressure on him with Thabo now, and that will help us in bargaining.  He knows we don't need him as much as we did a week ago.  I think we just need to win, and all these guys will sign for less to play for the best team that can pay them what they want(no other team under the cap is in the playoffs.)

by cubbybear on Jul 3, 2006 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep
We can go over the cap to sign our FAs. The only question is how far over the luxury tax threshold Reinsdorf is willing to go. Probably why they are unloading Tyson for PJ Brown's expiring contract. Reinsdorf has said in the past he'd pay the luxury tax if the Bulls were competitive. I'd say the moves Pax has made in the past week have definitely made us competitive.

JUST REMEMBER DENG
loul deng broke part of his hand during the playoffs and couldnt shoot during the whole off season.  But he still shot .452. His biggest probably is his decision making skills. He always seems to get the ball and take the pull up J around the Wing near the free throw line. And he can never hit that shot. But half the time he coulda driven to the hoop

by LTrain 670 on Jul 4, 2006 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah
Deng pretty much had an excuse not to make big improvements last off season.  He seems like a serious player though, unless he has an attitude problem the team has been hiding.

by Colossus @ Blog a Bull on Jul 4, 2006 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

FA
look at the knicks...u can go unlimited over the cap by signing UR players with the new Collective barg. agreement.....the only thing is, once ur over the cap, u cant sign other FA except the $5M Mid Level excetpion...shouldnt be a problem if we salary dump chandler for pjbrown....

people are talking about this team being only eastern conf. finals....i dont wanna say championship, but finals are in sight.....whose the biggest threat in the east...heat...cavs...pistons..nets..magic.......the new and improved bulls could take any one of them....and if thomas and thabo play anything like deng, noc, duhon, kirk, or ben did their rookie seasons....shakes.....we might have a 7th rafter

Priorities
After reading this I think I'm in the minority on this site when thinking resigning Nocioni is perhaps 10th highest priority.

Noc is not the starting 3, Luol Deng is. Deng is 5 years younger, is Nocioni's equal already, has the pedigree to become a star, and we're going to deal him to make room for Noc?

Nocioni had a great stretch run and playoffs, but he will always be an undersized 4 or a too-slow 3. A great bench player to have, especially on this squad due his attitude and work ethic.

But if he prices himself out of that role so be it. I think that he and the Bulls realize that they are at best with eachother and Noc will 'settle' for a lesser contract than we all think. It really shouldn't be a concern.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Jul 4, 2006 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed: Deng = tremendous potential
I agree.  Noc is a great player to have and his work ethic and passion have won him the praise of Bulls fans.  However, Deng has tremendous potential and with his first real off-season to practice and workout, I think you'll see a different Lou out there next season.  Yes, he's still young and makes mistakes, but in the Pax/Skiles system, he will blossom into a great player.  He's a future All Star...

by Lincoln Park Elvis on Jul 5, 2006 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Deng really doesn't make very many mistakes
He fumbles the fast break occasionally, but other than that he does a great job of letting the game come to him.  I think when he finds those spots on the floor were he excells, he'll be a high-end-3.  He already is one of the best at back-door cuts.  Once his shot really gets fined tuned, he'll be strong.
