Summer League Rosters and Webcast

The Orlando Summer League Webcast is up and running. The Bulls debut at 3pm (edt) today.

Link to the live coverage appears to the right of the rosters on the following page:

http://www.nba.com/magic/news/06summerleague_rosters.html

It's not difficult to accomplish, but I'd put Tyrus Thomas at even money to make David Harrison cry at some point this afternoon.

uh oh
Tyrus Thomas looks more like a 2nd rounder, while thabo is dominating the game.  I just turned it on and already thomas got the ball stolen from him and blocked.

post play
The post moves attempted by Thomas and Schenscher have not thus far troubled the Summer Pacers.

Sefolosha has looked quite promising, though.

Sefolosha looked smooth.

Thank god for Schenscher -- that's how I picked them out too.  LOL.  He should be required to play summer league every year for that reason alone.

Summer league thoughts
That was really hard to follow, but still better than nothing I suppose.

There was one great Thabo play in the first quarter where he stole the ball and then went up gracefully (dare I say almost Pippen-like) with his arm extended and then swung the ball around and dropped it off to someone right under the basket.  Then a possession or two later he made another steal and got fouled.

I saw what seemed like a nice post spin move from Ty2 at some point, one great looking dunk, and one great-looking block in the 4th.

I only watched about 1/4 of the action though.

I think in future, I might just wait to read the DraftExpress reviews of these games. . . It did make me anxious to see these guys after a full camp when it counts though . . .

by preverbal on Jul 10, 2006 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

Player Reviews
There isn't alot to learn from summer league, but there were a few things.

Thabo ran the point the whole time he played.  He handled the ball well enough.  He finished two drives with his left hand, knocked down a 3 from the top of the key, and made some plays on defense.  The scouting reports seem accurate.

Thomas looked lost most of the game, except for a dunk on the break and another dunk when he spun in the post early in the game.  On offense you could see him thinking rather than reacting, and it led to turnovers and getting his shot blocked.

Luke and Basden looked like themselves, which isn't very good.  And everyone else is trash.

by Scotter on Jul 10, 2006 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

Thomas
You say he looked good on that wide open dunk, but he fell right on his ass instead of landing on his feet.
Jordan for three... YES!

by TheDynasty on Jul 10, 2006 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

oh well
Was that the only dunk he had?  Who the hell knows, it coulda been a different player.  Like I said, it was kinda hard to follow.  So shoot me.

For whatever reason, Thabo was the easiest guy to follow out there.

by preverbal on Jul 10, 2006 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Thomas had two dunks
The one on the break where he fell down and the one on a spin move early in the game.

by Scotter on Jul 10, 2006 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

who's in the 1 jersey
As I was watching, I saw what I think was number 1, I couldn't really tell. I think it was Aaron Miles, I thought he did pretty well. He was able to draw some fouls and he attacked the basket. If he performs well, he might take Pargo's spot as the third point guard.

by vtown754 on Jul 10, 2006 5:55 PM CDT reply actions

#1 = miles
Miles, however, has the complete inverse of Pargo's skill set. I can't imagine a reason for a team to have Duhon and Miles on the roster.

by Hoopinion on Jul 10, 2006 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

can't shoot
watched lot of Miles at Kansas, he has a poor outside shot

Bulls need players who can nail the 3

Duhun is on team because of great defense but you can't have too many short point guards, there is no more mins at guard with Hinrich, Gordan, Duhon, Thabo really available anyway

thomas
i dont mean to panic and there is not much one can tell from the first summer league game but i have a feeling that thomas is not going to play more than 15-20 minutes a game during the first year unless he gains some serious amount of weight.  He is such a gamble...lets hope he turns out for the best but I think he is going to be a marginal player next year and not make much of a factor.  Maybe a defensive boost here and there.

by Sambossanova on Jul 11, 2006 12:03 AM CDT reply actions

rookies don't always make a big impact...
but getting the consensus best player in the draft isn't exactly a gamble. Andrea Bargnani is a gamble, and Adam "Crybaby" Morrison is a gamble because of his health issues. Tyrus Thomas lacks experience (like every other rookie), and it is safe to say that his size isn't something to worry about now, as we haven't really seen how strong the guy is.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jul 11, 2006 4:55 AM CDT up reply actions

inexperience
hasn't he been playing organized ball for only a few years?  I have a feeling we are going to have to wait on him -- there will be a steep learning curve.  As opposed to Thabo, who looks large and in charge out there.

by preverbal on Jul 11, 2006 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Thomas...
played for his highschool, played AAU ball, was hurt and redshirted a year at LSU, and played a full season and tourney for LSU last year. Thabo has played in the Euroleague. Thomas has 20x the ability of Thabo, who is also a rookie. They are both going to make mistakes and look bad, likeley equally.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Jul 11, 2006 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

there was a consensus best player?
who?
seriously though, nobody can say there was a consensus best player.  there was a best guard (all though foye will push him), best athelete (we got him), best outside shooting big man and such, but there wasn't a consensus best player, right?

by CookDing on Jul 11, 2006 8:10 AM CDT up reply actions

not exactly...
I guess I mis-articulated (is that a word?) my thought. Thomas was the consensus best athlete, apologies, although there were a good number of "experts," like Kerr, who felt he had the highest ceiling out of the lottery picks.

Thabo
I'm really impressed with him. I didn't know his ballhandling skills were that good. He had a nice dunk right before the 1st quarter ended.

I have a question about Thomas though. I am watching him now in this game and he seems to be doing better today than from what I read about him yesterday.

He says he sees himself as a SF eventually. I believe the Bulls eventually see him as an athletic 4 once he bulks up a bit. Do you think Thomas's thoughts will be a factor in his NBA position? It seems to me he's just basing his position on how he plays right now instead thinking of himself with another 15-20 lbs.

Thomas' missed dunk
that dunk he missed on the spin move was something else! (or at least would have been)

He basically took one spinning drop step from the free throw line and nearly windmilled it in somebody's face.

I think the announcers summed it up best when they said that "if he's going to throw down dunks like that, this could be a very interesting year."

Game Report
Thabo looked good again.  I would have liked to see him guard Morrison more, but he did stuff a Morrison jump shot.  He got to the basket, knocked down a few jumpers, and made a lot of deflections on defense again.

Ty2 was much better today.  He knocked down jumpers, rebounded much better, and was alot more active in general.  He's clearly going to make rookie mistakes, but atleast he looked like he could contribute this year.  I would like to have seen him have to guard May in the post more to see if he could do it.  May backed him down pretty easily the couple of times they matched up.

take a look
Here's two youtube streams of highlights from both Bulls summerleague games.  For those of you who, like me, were unable to catch them previously, it's a good sample of the prospects.  Curiously, the Bulls are the only team that appears to have youtube highlights.  sweet.
Overall, the players look fine.  Ty2 looks active which is very nice.  Thabo certainly looked like the most "ready" player on the floor, though that means very little in summerleague.  Still, it's encouraging.
Speaking of Ty2, did anybody catch Pax's comments that he needs to "get into playing shape"?  I didn't bother to post to them.  If you want to find them, they're in the spyder links on the left side of the home page.  It's the trib article about the summerleague game.  I thought Ty2 spent the offseason working himself into better shape?

by CookDing on Jul 12, 2006 9:11 AM CDT reply actions

Thabo and Tyrus
Both looked really promising in those highlights.  T2 has that explosive leaping ability and a developing jumper, Thabo shows good ball control and court awareness...

by CRG on Jul 12, 2006 9:45 AM CDT up reply actions

stood out
what stood out to me was how well Thomas handled the ball, passed (a couple were full court which won't fly in the reg season, but still) and stayed within the offense.  I had to remind myself that it's only summerleague, but I liked what I saw from him.
As for Thabo, he just looked like he was ahead of everybody.  He saw the court better, was more polished in his play, had more composure, etc..  Looks to be pretty sharp.
Of course, Eddie Basden was also our leading scorer and we know how much he contributed last year.
One worrying note: apparently Ty1 left his hands behind for Schenscher and Drago to take advantage of.  Man, both those guys blow.

No Thabo
No one said why he isn't playing.  I imagine it is just get some of the other guards playing time.  It also looks like that wanted to get Ty2 some time at the 3.

by Scotter on Jul 12, 2006 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

Ty2
Looks like he's really trying to convince people he can play the 3.  So far he's launched three 3-pointers but none have gone in.  He also gladly switched onto Dorrel Wright, in what looked like an attempt to prove he could guard a swing guy.

I'm glad that he's confident and assertive, but until he refines some of his game I'm sure Skiles will be every-ready with the quick hook.

He also looks like he'll drive opponents loopy as he flies around trying to grab loose offensive rebounds.

They ran a nice back-door alley-oop.  Very nice throw-down.

Game Report-3
Without Thabo playing all of the focus was on Ty2.

When he played fifteen feet and in, he was pretty effective.  He was fouled everytime he drove so it was hard to tell how well he would have finished those drives.  At times he was played out of control on both ends of the floor, trying to do too much offensively and double teaming outside the 3pt  line for no reason.  I'm starting to wonder about his basketball IQ.  There's alot of wasted movement in his game right now.

by Scotter on Jul 12, 2006 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

Ty2
It'll be interesting to see how Skiles works with him.  You're right; Ty2's game right now is pretty raw.

I imagine Skiles will force him to stay within himself, otherwise he'll be yanked.  He needs to focus on what he does well -- rebound, defend, hustle, dunk, etc. -- and build his game out from there incrementally.  If he tries to rush it all out there at once, he'll be sitting on the bench.

The first thing to correct: stop the freeze frame.  No more pondering from 18 feet.  Move the ball or get on with it.

But the kid's got talent.

Sefolosha's ready to contribute.  He's going to complete re-work the 1-3 rotation.

summer league ft shooting?
He shot 66% at LSU.

Luckily, FT% is one of the few stats you don't have to worry about context...so I'd trust that number more than whatever he's doing in a few summer league games. Unless he's changing his shooting stroke or something.

(I realize 66% is no great shakes either)

They have a lot of players on the summer league squad - they know what Thabo can do, so they're giving more time to other players.  A lot of European scouts are there - the pro teams let everyone get a change to show their skills in front of those scouts, too.

he tired of teammates dropping passes
seriously though, the first two games made it apparent that the games are only a cardiovascular workout for him.  he has little prove and it's not enhancing his game to be playing with scrubby players.  on top of all that, he just finished euroball about a month ago and immediately took up conditioning upon arriving in the U.S. ...the guy's in shape.
It sucks to not watch him play, but he's clearly a cut above the players on the court.

I've really come around on Tyrus through these games.  The results are mixed and he definitely has aspects of his game to polish (don't float long-range jumpers when guarded! especially fadeaways!!), but it's also clear he can contribute this season.  Hopefully he accepts a front-court role this season and then builds his game out as he gets more comfortable.  Just stick to the set jumper, some slashing and cleaning glass/alley-oops/blocking and he'll provide a great boost.

Thabo
is not there. Skiles sent him home. Said he has seen all he needs to of Thabo. Must be pretty impressed with him.

Sefolosha
Apparently, he's not playing because the Bulls have seen enough of him and know what he can do. So, they're giving him a break. That's according to the announcers.

Must be because
we are playing Orlando but the announcers have turned into whiners.

Ty2
Hits a 2 thought 3, down by 4, with about 1 minute to go.  He might not shoot a high % from 3, but he does have some range.

Thabo's hurt
Apparently, Thabo flew back here (to Chicago) to see doctors after sustaining a minor hip flexor.  I guess the announcers were mistaken.

Tyrus
is playing really well today so far in the first half.

1st half
18 points in the half, his last 2 points on an alley-oop which he still threw down even though the pass was off.
