Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Deng

I know a lot of people here are really high on Deng and think he has the most star potential out of everyone on the Bulls.  But, during the playoffs, Deng disappeared and the big three became, Hinrich, Gordon, and Nocioni.  Deng has a lot of talent, but he seems to break the offensive flow with quick jumpshots.  If anyone should do that, it's Gordon, not Deng.

That being said, Deng is a good slasher when he's not chucking up contested jumpers.  He is also a big, long, quick perimiter defender who, combined with Nocioni's strength and toughness, gives the Bulls great defensive depth at SF.

So what do you think of his future?

Ceiling Unknowable
Remember that Deng only just turned 21, missed pretty much the entire offseason last year, and hasn't even been playing basketball that long.  How good was Pippen at the end of his second season?  Roughly about as good as Luol is right now.  I'm not saying he will turn into Pippen, but I don't see any way of knowing what the future holds here.  If he can get a bit more fierce, then I see an EXTREMELY high ceiling for him.  He's right the right build for a young swingman, and showed us a lot more than we expected this year.

With a full summer of work, I expect him to be in the running for most improved next season.  He's got a world of potential...

Deng's future
I think the most important question is if Deng can play the 2 guard. At this point Noch is the best small forward on the team. If Deng can't become a starter as a 2, then maybe we need to think about a trade. I think Deng is too good to be a back up, but I wouldn't sit Noch to start him.
