Colangelo War Room footage

Here is a link to a Basketball Jones post showing a video of Toronto's GM Colangelo's phone calls while he was trying to get another first round pick to pick up Marcus Williams in the middle first round.  At one point he makes a call to Pax and asks about our pick.  Pretty cool video seeing him trying to get info.

Ainge and the Hawks?
My favorite part when he referred to Ainge as the Hawks guy.  Hawks, Brian?

That's the phone call that sparked the CV/TJ Ford trade, the trade that's going to pay big dividends to the Bucks in a couple of years, and have the Raptors wondering why they did it in a couple of years.

I wonder if Pax would ever let anyone film his war room?

Ainge/Hawks
It was my impression that he wanted to talk to BOTH Ainge and somebody from the Hawks, he wasn't confusing the two.

Although did he really have to ask what 'background' problems Marcus Williams had? He was the illegal equivalent of the Dell dude.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Nov 6, 2006 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

No
He gets everything right.  He's talking about both the Celtics and Hawks passing on Williams.  He says he'll call Ainge and that other guy should call someone at the Hawks.  The best part, I thought, was when he said Danny will tell him why they passed.  It turns out Danny didn't tell him.

that part was great
(seriously, that whole video was riveting)

"I'll call Danny, he'll tell me"

"Danny, something I should know about Williams?"

"of course it's fair!"

haha
I love how he jocks the Bulls.

Talking to Paxson

"You guys are really long and athletic and deep . . . etc etc etc."

by Option27 on Nov 6, 2006 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

Wasn't it laptops
Didn't Marcus have a little theft problem involving laptops?  Wouldn't Colangelo remember that from the news?

And I certainly mis-heard him on the Hawks/Ainge stuff but I loved Ainge not wanting to tell him anything.

Still want a Bulls war room video though.  Skiles would probably stare down the camera man.

serious
I need a Bulls war room video ASAP

Bulls related quotes.
(paraphrased on the fly, feel free to correct and add)

Colangelo: Chicago's walks out of here with Thomas and Sefolosha? Athleticism......Luol Deng...that's a lot of athletes. But...Thomas is more of a 3 than a 4, and Sefolosha is more of a 3 than a 2.

Calls Pax:
"If you get Thomas and Sefolosha, are you interested in moving Deng? [pause for response] Really? You guys are going to be long...and deep. Is there anyone expendable on your roster? [pause] Ok, well congratulations"

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Nov 6, 2006 6:10 PM CST reply actions

heh, just realized
Colangelo could've had Deng with his Suns had he not sold the draft pick to the Bulls for a future first.

Such a shame
we didn't hear anything else about a possible trade with the Bulls.

V would have been a great guy to get.

What do you think
it would have taken to get him?

Seems like they wanted a PG and outside of Hinrich, we don't have one.  The #16 pick and someone else, who I don't know.

V
I wouldn't really want V, but isn't Duhon a point guard.  One that the Raptors even offered a free agent contract to?

by tofferr on Nov 7, 2006 1:55 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but
I highly doubt that Duhon and our #16 pick would be enough to get Charlie V

We could have drafted Marcus Williams since they seemed so high on him and then given them a non-PG from our roster.  Who they'd want is beyond me.

questions
-I get that it's a multimillion dollar investment in new players, but why so many people in the war room?  And they were all sitting there with briefing folders, but doing nothing.

-why the pink shirt and pink tie combo?

-was that wayne embry or jabba the hut?

-what did he think that Danny Ainge was going to tell him?  And, with all those people in the room, you couldn't find someone to find something else on MW?

wow
That was fantastic.  Thanks for the post.

I love the comment
made further down that page...
This video has completely changed my perception of Brian Colangelo.

"What am I missing on Marcus Williams? Is there something I'm missing here?"

How 'bout the fact he copped a handful of laptops? He's a petty theif, Brian!

And if memory serves, the Knicks had the pick right before Marcus was eventually drafted. Colangelo couldn't even trick Isiah into giving up the pick? Cripes, who can't pull a fast one on Isiah? He looked like me trying to make a fantasy footall trade. And this was after he traded for TJ Ford's spine.

If I was a Raptors fan, I'd be slightly nervous right now.

Petty Thief
I was going to post over there... first its spelled thief... second, it handful of laptops wouldn't be petty in most jurisdictions... I believe that usually describes thefts uder $25.

Fat
Williams also added some noticeable weight before the draft, which was pretty common knowledge.
I'm also not sold on Colangelo.  Paxson's highway robbery of him in 2004 said all that I need to hear.
"Is Deng expendable?"  ...dipshit, you could have had him two years ago.
Plus, what's with the whole "nice guy" exchange?  They spent how much time debating whether or not he as a "nice guy"?  Wow, he's nice!  That's all I need to hear before offering a contract and spot on the team.

awesome video
I love when he asks about marcus, then says, "thats a fair question"...i wonder how much owners trust eachother

I'm sure
they all trust and love Cuban.

Wake up
I love it at the start when Colango keeps rhetorically asking " he is a good kid isn't he" then he directly asks the guy at the end of the table and the guy kind of wakes up, straightens his suit and profoundly says "yea" and then slouches back down. The way every one around him looks kind of disinterested suggests to me that he may be a one man show kind of person who surrounds himself with yes men.
