Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

favorite player

Just wondering what everyones favorite player is.  Krappy is my new favorite player. I love the heart and intensity that he plays with.  He also has a great oppurtunity to be a great player under scott skiles a coach who rewards hustle.  I don't know why but Ben Wallace was my favorite player in the league last year but not anymore. Just don't like him as much because I think he basically did the same thing as Johhny Damon last year and now I hate him (damon) more than anyone in any sport at any time. But anyway who is your favorite player?

I can't say I like
the Ben Wallace hate-speech. And bringing up East coast baseball players is totally uncalled for. I can't just vote for hustle?

That Mean Old Ben . . .
How dare someone leave a job in order to take a higher-paying job someone else!  That never happens in the real world, only with spoiled athletes!

Damon went to the arch rival
and that was after signing autographs "Yankees suck" for so long.

Apathy
No self-respecting Chicago sports fan should care, with the exception of being annoyed at ESPN whenever that crap is promoted or aired. Like Omar Little says, "A man got to have a code."

Thumbs up on the Wire reference.

agreed...LOVE 'The Wire'
although I must serve this warning: I have not seen past season 2 of The Wire (this is what happens when you make playdates to watch DVD seasons with friends)...so if anyone utters a Wire spoiler I will  go completely nuts.

Care about what exactly?
Wallace leaving Detroit for Chicago?  I don't care about that.

Damon leaving Boston for New York?  I care bc the Red Sox are my second favorite baseball team and have been since junior high.

sad to say
but players don't have 'rivals'...that kind of stuff is fan-only.

The only exception of course is Wayne Larivee leaving the Bears radio booth to do Packers games. Screw you Wayne!

Players have rivals.
I don't see how you can suggest that the Red Sox and Yanks don't treat each series more special and meaningful than any other team they play.

Part of the reason players have rivals is because of fans and media though.

well....
they're rivals in that sense, but not enemies to the point where one wouldn't sign with the other. It's all one big fraternity.

If I had been on the Red Sox for years, loved
by the fans like Damon, and part of the 2004 ALCS/WS team, I wouldn't go to the Yankees.

Getting paid $52m over four years doesn't make that much of a difference to me than $40m.  Even after taxes and fees, $20m is still a lot and I could easily make more by investing in T-Notes.

You're such a stand up guy. Every spoiled pro athlete ever has just been put in his and her place.

by Paxson Jackson @ Blog a Bull on Oct 31, 2006 8:37 AM CST up reply actions

I appreciate the sarcasm.
I just really don't see what big difference a few million a year can make when talking about $10m and $13m.  Money is nice, but greed sucks.

Hell, if I had $1,000,000,000 I'd give a large majority of it away.

I'd keep it
and blog full-time. Or hire someone to blog for me while jumping into a pile of gold coins ala Scrooge McDuck, either way.

by your friendly BullsBlogger on Oct 31, 2006 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

Put it in perspective
Money breaks up even the closest of familial relationships. That's greed. A pro athlete hitting free agency and being signed by another team doesn't even register on that scale.

And for even more perspective, imagine someone commenting about being a Red Sox fan on a Bulls blog on the day of Game 1. I may comment too much, and give away enough unsolicited advice to bother every single reader, but this case isn't even worth debating.

Back to basketball:
Slam has a great blurb about Ernie, Kenny, and Sir Charles on Inside the NBA's media day. I'm looking forward to the studio show almost as much as the game.

Man, it is great to have the whole season
to look forward to.  Love the TNT gang!  The fantasy teams haven't gone to hell yet, the Bulls are in the first game of the season, and life couldn't be better.  Can't wait to hear the guys analyzing the game tonight.

Wayne is happy
covering the Packers.  At least, he seems to be.  Best damn football radio guy.  Makes everything seem exciting, replaced a legend in Jim Irwin.

I listened to part of a Bears game on radio early in the season.  So I do understand your anger.

Benedict Wallace
I have mentioned here in the past that I went to Michigan for school and have a ton of friends who are big Pistons fans.  Some of them have recently claimed "Ben is dead to me."  Others felt during the season that it was inevitable that he would leave and blame Saunders for in effect driving Ben out.  Yes, the Bulls offered more money, but the Pistons were not playing the style of ball he wanted to play.  He was clashing with the coach and decided to go to a team that was going to play the style he wanted.  To me, that seems quite different than the Damon situation (which, admittedly, I don't know all that well - I'm no beisbol fan).  Didn't Damon simply leave for money?  If Ben was happy in Detroit AND thought they had a good chance to win the title, he would not have left.  I know people will argue that it's just about the money in the NBA, but I honestly think he was very frustrated with Saunders.  He simply didn't air it publicly.  He could have done what other stars do and forced the coach out.  I think when Saunders kept him out of nearly the entire 4th quarter of Game 6 vs the Heat, that pretty much sent him over the edge.  The Pistons can blame themselves for Ben's departure in my opinion.
Deng 4 MVP, 2008!

Fave
I first clicked on this thinking, this is kinda silly.  But then I realized it's an excellent question, and I had a really hard time figuring it out.  In some ways, I think it's impossible to choose between these guys.  They're all a bit different, but the one thing that unites them is that they're all incredibly easy to root for.  This is truly a team you can get behind.

That said, I picked Chapu because he plays with the kind of balls I wish I could play with.  I also love the way he talks to himself when he makes a mistake.  (It was very hard to not pick Kirk given the shot he hit vs. Miami last year, and also hard not to pick Ben given the game he had vs. Washington.  However, Nocioni took the fast-break charge that sent the bulls into the playoffs in that one, so that kind of sealed it for me).

Let's start the season!  Anyone else going to Friday's home opener???

my troubles
My two favorites are Nocioni and Deng. Chapu is from  my land but Deng is the most skilled bull or at least will eventually be the most skilled.  i hope they can both stay on the bulls for a long time.

Why does Gordon not get more love?
Ok, yes yes I realize Gordon has been inconsistent in his brief NBA career so far. His ball handling has led to many turnovers, his defense has been inept at times, all that. But who has a prettier shot in the NBA? The fact is that, at 6'3", for Gordon to be the shooter he is, says a lot about his talent. His rainbows over guards 5-6" taller than him, not to mention centers or forwards, are a thing of rare beauty. They literally go vertical before they go horizontal. I could watch that all day. Bjizzle all the way.

Had to go with Kirk
because he's the sole reason I became a Bulls fan.  Not from Chicago, grew up a Blazers fan (in the glory days) and hating the Bulls (although not as much as I hated the Pistons).  But my KU love followed Kirk to the Bulls, and now I'm hooked.  So I go with Kirk as the top fav, but really love the whole darn team.

by wjb1492 on Oct 31, 2006 11:06 AM CST reply actions

No Favorite Bulls Player is my vote
the bulls are my favorite team, but there is no particular player that I like the most overall(Chapu or Ben Gordon on most nights, probably).

my favorite "players" are actually on other teams, e.g., Nash, Dwyane Wade, Kirilenko, LeBron. My favorite Rookie right now is Adam Morrison (not because he is the best, but because he looks like a serial killer).  And ex-Bulls are always of interest.

by GWKD on Oct 31, 2006 12:06 PM CST reply actions

I'm sure
you would all be shocked to know that Kirk is my faovrite player on the Bulls. Gotta show the Iowa kid some love. Chapu and Deng are also favorites too and how can you not love Krappy's enthusiasm?
Go Hawkeyes.....Beat Northwestern!!!

My favorite?
I still love John Paxson best.

However, if I have to pick a current one, I'd pick Kirk.  Or Luol.   Or someone else entirely.  Depends on the day of the week.
